Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain School-Teacher There had once been a path along the backbone of the mountain, but the wilderness had undertaken to remove it, and had almost succeeded. The wind had gathered bits of moss, twigs and dead stuff into the slight depression. The great hickories had covered it with leaves. The rain had packed it. There was no longer a path, only an open way between the trees running down the gentle slope of the ridge to the mountain road. Book The Making of an American School Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Making of an American School Teacher Classic Reprint written by Forrest Crissey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of an American School-Teacher A few words only are needed to introduce this little book. If it has any quality of helpfulness, it will speak for itself better than any preface could do. It was first published serially in the Saturday Evening Post and merits, it is believed, a more permanent form, especially as it touches upon problems of Public School Administration that are of universal concern. It will interest some readers to know, others will readily recognize the fact that this book is the life-story of Mr. E. G. Cooley, head of the Public School System of Chicago and one of the foremost educators of America. He has under his charge 259 schools, 5,800 teachers and 280,000 pupils - truly a great responsibility. Mr. Cooley has had a rare career - a career still unfinished, but rich in suggestion to all who have a care for the processes by which a real education is developed. Download or read book The Teacher and His Work Classic Reprint written by Samuel Findley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and His Work I have not been ambitious to make a large book, but rather to condense within moderate limits as much as possible of helpfulness and inspiration to those who are bearing the burden and heat of the day. Nor have I striven after novelty or display of learning, but I have striven to make simple and plain some of the most vital things in school educa tion. The life of an earnest teacher is of necessity laborious and pains-taking, but it has its compensa tions. Though at times painfully conscious of weak ness and short-coming, I find in the retrospect ofthe years much more of satisfaction than regret. I rejoice that I have had, and still have, some part in a work so good. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Elementary School Teacher Vol 6

Download or read book The Elementary School Teacher Vol 6 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Teacher, Vol. 6: July, 1905 June, 1906 To find futures for the child is the teacher's mission. Many of these are, however, already in the child himself. All of those capable of present real activity are to be found there, and of many of them he is already conscious. Why, then, should the teacher hunt for all possible kinds of future needs, and neglect the needs and aims which the child is actually feeling at the present? On the contrary, the proper satisfaction of those near at hand will lead most naturally to those that are farther off. And, without finding out how he can satisfy present ideal needs, how will the habit of exerting himself to satisfy these future needs ever arise? We must exercise such habits as will later on be used. If, then, submission to those over him, and dulness to the conduct and movement of the rest of society, even if this should be beneficial, are wanted, the teacher may safely be continuously authori tative. If, however, the power to create society is wanted, experience in doing this thing either as leader or as voluntary follower is necessary to the result. Book The Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teacher Classic Reprint written by Florence Milner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher The influences that have obtained in recruiting the vast army of teachers are infinite in variety. Some have taken up the work with definite purpose, some are teachers by acci dent A large number, especially among the women, have drifted into the ranks with no very definite idea as to how or why they are there or how long they may remain. But no matter whence these teachers come, no matter why, they should, being committed to the profession, consider carefully What it has to offer either as an occupation for a few years or for a life work. To the man, the situation pre sents one problem; to the woman, a different one entirely. There was a time when teaching offered to the young man a natural stepping-stone to a Wider or, at least, a different career. If he expected eventually to be a min ister, doctor, lawyer, or a business man, two or three years in the school-room was considered excellent preparation, and not a waste of time. Today it is necessary 'for a young man to select his chosen profession early and to enter upon it as soon as possible. All time spent in any other direction is deemed worse than thrown away. Competition is too great to admit of any but the direct road. This condition of affairs cuts off from the number of school men many naturally brilliant and well equipped, who, in former times, did excellent work in the school-room for short periods. Now and then today there is a young man who still finds teaching the first open door to Wider activity and broader culture. He teaches a year or two, saves a little money, growing a little bigger each month, until he sees other and more profitable opportunity for his increasing powers opening before him. This young man does not have much knowledge of pedagogy, often has no experience at all, but he brings something vital, virile, to the school-room which more than balances lack in technical requirements. What he brings counts for more than normal school train ing, a teacher's diploma from college, or than a head full of books on psychology, pedagogy, child study, and meth ods of discipline, good as they may be in their place.
