Book excerpt: “This book will prove to be a most effective weapon… against the debunking and skeptical attitudes toward the Gospels that are so prevalent, not only in academe, but also on the street, among young people who, sadly, are leaving the Churches in droves.” – Robert Barron, author of Catholicism For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies? • Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John? • Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? • Why was Jesus crucified? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Book The Storm God and the Sea

Download or read book The Storm God and the Sea written by Noga Ayali-Darshan and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of the combat between the Storm-god and the Sea that began circulating in the early second millennium BCE was one of the most well-known ancient Near Eastern myths. Its widespread dissemination in distinct versions across disparate locations and time periods - Syria, Egypt, Anatolia, Ugarit, Mesopotamia, and Israel - calls for analysis of all the textual variants in order to determine its earliest form, geo-cultural origin, and transmission history. In undertaking this task, Noga Ayali-Darshan examines works such as the Astarte Papyrus, the Pisaisa Myth, the Songs of Hedammu and Ullikummi, the Baal Cycle, Enuma elis, and pertinent biblical texts. She interprets these and other related writings philologically according to their provenance and comparatively in the light of parallel texts. The examination of this story appearing in all the ancient Near Eastern cultures also calls for a discussion of the theology, literature, and history of these societies and the way they shaped the local versions of the myth.

Book The Poems of a Cowboy Preacher

Download or read book The Poems of a Cowboy Preacher written by Lee Brock and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Brock was born in Lamesa, Texas, in October 1923. His parents were cotton farmers on the plains of Texas where he learned about hard work, wind, windmills, horses, cattle and the beauty of nature. In school he learned to express his thoughts about his life in poems. He was saved, baptized, and called to preach in a revival at Seminole, Texas, in 1938, and a spiritual element was added to his poetry. Thus began a lifetime of poetry writing from the perspective of a cowboy preacher. Lee graduated from high school in Hermleigh, Texas in 1941 and was ordained to preach on December 7, 1941-the same day that Pearl Harbor was attacked. He enrolled in Wayland Baptist College in January 1942. There he met Frances Patterson, and they married eighteen months later. He attended Baylor University for two years before graduating from Howard Payne University in 1947. He pastored churches in Rockdale and Thorndale while going to school and after graduation moved on the field at Mountain Home, Texas. It was ranch country and the cowboy helped the local ranchers with their work while he ministered to their spiritual needs as pastor. But in 1952 under the leadership of the Lord he moved to Camas, Washington to start a new church. As a bi-vocational pastor, he helped the people move from Sunday meeting in a Seven Day Adventist Church (who meet on Saturdays) to having a nice building on the outskirts of town. Several leaders in the Northwest Baptist Convention today came from that church. Lee's ministry stretched over fifty years and across pastorates in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Williams Lake, British Columbia, The Dalles, Oregon, Goldendale, Washington and Rufus, Oregon. People were blessed by his leadership, his loving spirit, and, of course, his poetry.

Book excerpt: What if the key to changing your life--and yourself--is already in your hand? So many women struggle with what to do with their daily lives. They feel trapped in everyday drudgery and disappointment, in dull domestic duties, and in mundane jobs they despise. Where is the abundant, purposeful life they were promised? Kari Patterson shows readers the truth: in each unremarkable life lies an opportunity to see, know, love, and be utterly transformed by a God who meets everyone right where they are. Instead of stepping away from real life to find God, Patterson equips women with a six-step practice to move further in and meet Him in the humdrum moments of everyday existence. And when a woman's inner being is truly changed by the sacred, everything in her world changes too--right down to tackling the dirty dishes. Through entertaining narrative, candid real-life stories, Bible study, and practical instruction, Sacred Mundane guides individuals or small groups to discover the beautiful sacredness in the lives they already lead. Women who long to grow in God and make a real difference in the world--no matter how small--will reach eagerly for this book and the radical transformation it offers. "Our daily routine, with its mundane tasks and mindless repetition, is ultimately an offering of worship to God. What a great truth from a great God!" --Ann Byle, author of The Making of a Christian Bestseller and coauthor of Devotions for the Soul Surfer

Book East Asia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugh Dyson Walker
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2012-11
  • ISBN : 1477265163
  • Pages : 674 pages

Download or read book East Asia written by Hugh Dyson Walker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histories of East Asia traditionally emphasize China and Japan, and neglect Korea and Vietnam. Essentially, 20th century East Asia is re-written into the past, as though China and Japan was always the core of East Asian development. This is not at all how East Asia developed. Chinese prehistoric cultures became historic in the 18th century B.C.! Japan was not part of East Asia for over 2300 more years. By studying periods of Chinese unity and disunity, and their effects on China s neighbors, Korea and Vietnam, a distinct culture zone, East Asia, gradually emerged, and slowly included Japan. The main elements of East Asia cultural, social, political, philosophical, religious and linguistic were derived from China, but the others were not minor replicas of China. Each was unique: its people ethnically distinct, from China and each other; its native language, and linguistic blend with Chinese, also unique. Korea and Vietnam resisted Chinese colonization, but adopted and adapted advance Chinese elements to their own needs. Emerging later, Japan underwent wholesale adoption of Tang China s advances, replicated in the 19th century, when Japan was the first East Asian country to modernize. Spanning some thirty-eight centuries, from the 18th century B.C. to 2012 A.D., this diversity with common elements derived from China, is a major theme of this work. It is often overlooked by those who prefer general views, based on surface impressions, to more complex realities. The former often lead to mistakes; the latter become the basis for more sound understanding. After all, these four countries and people share the eastern end of the Eurasian continent, yet each country s geographic situation is also unique. As the twenty-first century continues to unfold, this new approach to East Asia should help to produce clearer and more accurate understanding of this important world region.

Book Many Lives Many Times

Download or read book Many Lives Many Times written by Nguyên Phong and published by First News. This book was released on with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Many Lives Many Times, Nguyen Phong uses a dialogue between the astronaut Edgar Mitchell and the Buddhist Master Sheng Yen as a springboard to explore how the concepts of reincarnation and causality might inform us about human history. While these two concepts are not new, as many scientists had done much work in trying to validate them, this book also touches upon the current state of humanity, and many warning signs present in today’s society. More importantly, the author is trying to help us avoid repeating the decline and fall of our society—a story that has been repeated many times in human history. This book takes the reader through intriguing stories, from lifetimes in ancient Atlantis and Egypt to the modern United States. This book is fun to read while provides deep exploration of these civilizations via their key cultural beliefs. Most importantly, the book provides not-too-subtle hints about shortcomings of our current society as well as clear guidance for its improvement via our individual and collective actions! One of the best assets this book has to offer is a four-letter word: HOPE. As individuals, when we pit ourselves against huge problems such as the pandemic or ever-increasing natural catastrophes, we feel like David fighting Goliath. After all, what can one person do in the face of a category four hurricane? Not much. But what if the following two factors were true? 1. What comes around goes around (i.e., the good we do for others comes back to us) 2. We have access to the results of the acts of goodness we performed in past lives Through the stories of the narrator, Thomas, who can remember his past lives, the book explores the idea that the consciousness is permanent and lasting, beyond the death of the physical body. In addition, the “seeds of goodness” (or good acts) performed in one life are stored and kept as the consciousness travels from lifetime to lifetime, and “sprout” when the conditions are “ripe”. If these two factors are true, they give us access to much more actively positive power to affect the world than if we did not reincarnate complete with the seeds of our past lives. Of course, the same principles are true of negative acts, so we may have to “pay” for our actions that negatively affected others in our past lives. This wonderful book takes readers on a journey not just through time, but through different ways of looking at the world – the world as it is today, and the world as it could be if we each became that butterfly in the Amazon, flapping our wings to create a storm of unimaginable positive change.
