Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Feed Children, a Manual for Mothers: Nurses, and Physicians The substance of a number of papers that have appeared during the last two years in various journals has been embodied in this book upon the request of members of the medical profession, mothers, and others interested in children. These articles have been carefully revised, and much additional material has been used. All statements made are based upon facts accepted very generally by scientists and physicians both here and abroad, where the greatest amount of original research has been made, and authority for these facts, when not credited in the text, may be found in the works of the following writers, which have been studied very carefully, in connection with much other reading relative to the subject: "Pediatrics," T. M. Rotch, M.D.; "Infant Diet" and "Therapeutics of Infancy and Childhood," A. Jacobi, M.D.; "Food in Health and Disease," I. Burney Yeo, M.D., F.R.C.P.; u Diet after Weaning" (Keating's "Cyclopaedia"), by Samuel S. Adams, A.M., M.D.; "The Mother's Work with Sick Children," Professor J. B. Fonssagrives; "Practical Dietetics," W. Gilman Thompson, M.D. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Baby: A Concise and Practical Guide for the Use of Mothers in the Care and Feeding of Infants and Young Children The acute infectious diseases (diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc.) have not been mentioned because they are, without exception, conditions which should be treated by a physician. In case of sickness, no mother or nurse should depend upon any book in caring for a baby, but upon the advice of a physician, who should be one well trained and experlenced in diseases peculiar to children. If a baby is sick, the physician ought to be summoned at once; and in no case should a mother attempt to prescribe for her child - disregard of this rule has caused thousands of lives to be lost. This book is not intended to supplant or to be a substitute for the physician; therefore prescrip tions have not been given. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advice to a Mother on the Management of Her Children: Large Print By Pye Henry Chavasse 1. I wish to consult you on many subjects appertaining to the management and the care of children; will you favour me with your advice and counsel? I shall be happy to accede to your request, and to give you the fruits of my experience in the clearest manner I am able, and in the simplest language I can command-freed from all technicalities. I will endeavour to guide you in the management of the health of your offspring;-I will describe to you the symptoms of the diseases of children;-I will warn you of approaching danger, in order that you may promptly apply for medical assistance before disease has gained too firm a footing;-I will give you the treatment on the moment; of some of their more pressing illnesses-when medical aid cannot at once be procured, and where delay may be death;-I will instruct you, in case of accidents, on the immediate employment of remedies-where procrastination may be dangerous;-I will tell you how a sick child should be nursed, and how a sick-room ought to be managed;-I I will use my best energy to banish injurious practices from the nursery;-I will treat of the means to prevent disease where it be possible;-I will show you the way to preserve the health of the healthy, -and how to strengthen the delicate;-and will strive to make a medical man's task more agreeable to himself, -and more beneficial to his patient, -by dispelling errors and prejudices, and by proving the importance of your strictly adhering to his rules. If I can accomplish any of these objects, I shall be amply repaid by the pleasing satisfaction that I have been of some little service to the rising generation. 2. Then you consider it important that I should be made acquainted with, and be well informed upon, the subjects you have just named? Certainly! I deem it to be your imperative duty to study the subjects well. The proper management of children is a vital question, -a mother's question, -and the most important that can be brought under the consideration of a parent; and, strange to say, it is one that has been more neglected than any other. How many mothers undertake-the responsible management of children without previous instruction, or without forethought; they undertake it, as though it may be learned either by intuition or by instinct, or by affection. The consequence is, that frequently they are in a sea of trouble and uncertainty, tossing about without either rule or compass; until, too often, their hopes and treasures are shipwrecked and lost. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book The Mother s Manual of Children s Diseases

Download or read book The Mother s Manual of Children s Diseases written by Charles West and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: ...her child, and the child's welfare and the parent's happiness alike depend, in many instances, on the way in which she sets about to answer the question, 'What is the matter?'Some mothers send at once to the doctor whenever they see or fancy that anything ails their child. But this way of getting rid of responsibility is not always possible, nor, indeed, on moral grounds, is it always desirable, for the mother who delegates each unpleasant duty to another, whether nurse, governess, or doctor, in order to save herself trouble or anxiety, performs but half a mother's part, and can expect but half a mother's recompense of love.Whenever a child is unwell, a mother may do much to ascertain what is the matter, and may by the exercise of a little patience and common sense save herself much needless heart-ache, and her child much suffering. The first point to ascertain is the presence or absence of fever; that is to say, whether, and how much, the temperature of the body is higher than natural...

Book Counsel to a Mother on the Care and Rearing of Her Children

Download or read book Counsel to a Mother on the Care and Rearing of Her Children written by Pye Henry Chavasse and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. THE CIRCULATION of my four Books is very large : Forty-seven thousand copies of Advice to a Wife, forty-seven thousand copies of Advice to a Mother, ten thousand copies (including the present edition) of Counsel to a Mother, and two thousand copies (first edition) of Aphorisms for Parents have already been published -- making an aggregate of my four books, and of the English Editions alone, of upwards of 100,000 copies. The aggregate sale for the one year -- the last -- amounts to about 15,000 copies -- equivalent, in one twelve-months, to fifteen ordinary editions, and still the sale rapidly increases. I again wish to call my reader's particular attention to the milk-water-salt-and-sugar food (page 19), as one of the best -- if not the very best -- substitutes either for a mother's or for a wet-nurse's milk. Some of the finest children I have ever seen have been brought up upon it -- and upon it alone -- from their birth until they have been seven or nine months old; until, indeed, they have begun to cut their teeth; I mean, of course, when the mothers themselves were totally unfit -- as, unfortunately they frequently were, and are -- to suckle their own babes. If this food be used -- it should be used in its integrity, and with all the precautions and directions as advised in the text. It more resembles a mother's own milk than any other food I am acquainted with : hence the secret of its great Success. I have been frequently asked by patients as to the desirability, or otherwise, of their substituting Condensed Milk for new milk for their children. I have, in this edition, replied to such inquiries. Much additional matter has been added to this edition; among the rest a chapter "On Costive Bowels" (page 239) -- a subject demanding deep consideration, as the constant giving to a child, and, indeed, to everyone else, aperient medicine is pregnant with danger, and alike subversive of comfort, of comeliness, of health, of strength, and happiness, and is a bungling, blundering, and barbarous method of opening the bowels of a child who is habitually costive. (See, likewise, page 56.) The majority of cases of habitual costiveness is due to the administration of aperients; if a child never does take an aperient, he, as a rule, never requires one -- his bowels not being costive -- of this I am quite convinced. The frequent giving a costive child aperients is a grievous ill: it predisposes him to cold; it weakens his digestion; it knocks the strength out of him; it confirms his costiveness; it prepares the way for many and serious diseases. High time it is that attention was called to the subject, and that means were used to abate the wide-spread evil, and thus to stay "the slaughter of the innocents." Having devoted much labour in preparing this third edition, I flatter myself that I have greatly improved it. I resign it into the hands of my fair readers and of my numerous friends and patients -- assuring them that I have lost no opportunity, and have spared neither time nor pains to make this book still more worthy of their approval and of their acceptance. In conclusion: I wish to impress the following facts -- for they are facts -- deeply into my reader's mind: Many of the diseases, and a large percentage of the deaths of children, are preventable; but, then, vigilance, discipline, and good management must rule in the nursery and in the household generally. These pages are intended to help a mother in her arduous undertakings, and to smooth her path through difficulties, dangers, and perplexities. "Prosper Thou the works of our hands upon us, O prosper Thou our handy-work." --PYE HENRY CHAVASSE.
