As she discovers passion and ambition, and confronts doubt and disappointment, she learns about much more than tone and technique. This is a story of the getting of wisdom, tender and bittersweet. Book Adventures of an Old Lady Piano Teacher

Download or read book Adventures of an Old Lady Piano Teacher written by Vicki King and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a child, all piano teachers seemed old to me. Now that I am old, the time has come to tell my stories about my professional adventures from all over the world. These stories tell about my journey from the cornfields of Mississippi to the opera houses of Germany, where I worked in theaters as a ballet accompanist and opera coach, singing in My Fair Lady, and playing in a German polka band on a ship to Finland. There are stories about working as an operetta coach in Austria for many summers in which I played in a national prison; stories about unusual incidents playing the organ, such as playing at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna; or playing for a wedding interrupted by a former girlfriend of the groom as well as some quite colorful stories about students I have encountered (such as the boy who wore a surprise T-shirt to his recital, or the student who received a gift, courtesy of my cat, for two years in a row). Most of them are short and will give you quite a chuckle, but one or two are poignant. This is a feel-good book, and one that might take you back to your own piano lessons.

Book Note by Note

Download or read book Note by Note written by Tricia Tunstall and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this luminous book, Tricia Tunstall explores the enduring fascination of the piano lesson. Even as everything else about the world of music changes, the piano lesson retains its appeal. Drawing on her own lifelong experience as a student and teacher, Tunstall writes about the mysteries and delights of piano teaching and learning. What is it that happens in a piano lesson to make it such a durable ritual? In a world where music is heard more often on the telephone and in the elevator than in the concert hall, why does the piano lesson still have meaning in the lives of children? What does it matter whether one more child learns to play Bach's Minuet in G? Note by Note is in part a memoir in which Tunstall recalls her own childhood piano teachers and their influence. As she observes, the piano lesson is unlike the experience of being coached on an athletic team or taught in a classroom, in that it is a one-on-one, personal communication. Physically proximate, mutually concentrating on the transfer of a skill that is often arduous, complicated and frustrating, teacher and student occasionally experience breakthroughs-moments of joy when the student has learned something, mastered a musical passage or expressed a feeling through music. The relationship is not only one-way: teaching the piano is a lifelong endeavor of particular intensity and power. Anyone who has ever studied the piano-or wanted to-will cherish this gem of a book.
