Book excerpt: While one may be tempted by tradition to think of Jean de La Fontaine's The Fables as children's stories, such a notion does a disservice to La Fontaine's elegant poetry and down-to-earth, sometimes bitter philosophy and view of life. A point to keep in mind in reading The Fables is that they were written over a period of more than twenty-five years. The first six books of fables were published in 1668, five more books appeared in 1673-1679, and the twelfth and final book was published in 1694. As such, The Fables reflect the changes in point of view of a writer who matured and perhaps mellowed as he wrote and published his fable-poems.To a certain degree, La Fontaine's ideas also reflect social and political problems and philosophical styles in France during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). Many of the early fables seem to comment on specific injustices of Louis XIV's regime, especially as they affected the common people, while the fables from La Fontaine's later years mainly express a spiritual withdrawal that resembles stoicism in certain respects. As the literary heir of ancient fabulists such as Aesop, Bidpai, and Phaedrus, La Fontaine makes use of a form that was familiar to his readers. Most of his fables feature a story and a moral, the latter often separated from the text of the tale. La Fontaine's verse form varies; he uses eight-syllable lines as a basic structure, but he often exploits the dignified twelve-syllable Alexandrine form, the verse form identified with seventeenth century French tragedy, when he wishes to express exceptional drama and seriousness.

Book The Original Fables of La Fontaine

Download or read book The Original Fables of La Fontaine written by Jean de La Fontaine and published by Aegypan. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The world is old, they say. Well, so it is! But it is as greedy for amusement as a child!" The Happy Cobbler and his sad neighbor the Financier -- the Mouse in the Moon -- the Elephant and the Rat . . . Jean de La Fontaine found inspiration for his fables high and low, in society and nature, in history and fancy. Born in Champagne, France, in 1621, La Fontaine published the fables that would grant him literary immortality in a series of books beginning in 1668, with the last appearing the year before his death in 1695. Their magic is nowhere more evident than here, in "The Original Fables."

Book excerpt: This exclusive Signet Classic edition contains 203 of Aesop’s most enduring and popular fables, translated into readable, modern American English and beautifully illustrated with classic woodcuts by the great French artist J. J. Grandville. It is both amazing and wonderful that so much of the richness of our language and our moral education still owes a huge debt to a Greek slave who was executed more than two thousand years ago. Yet “sour grapes,” “crying ‘wolf,’” “actions speak louder than words,” “honesty is the best policy,” and literally hundreds of other metaphors, axioms, and ideas that are now woven into the very fabric of Western culture all came from Aesop’s Fables. An extraordinary storyteller who used cunning foxes, surly dogs, clever mice, fearsome lions, and foolish humans to describe the reality of a harsh world, Aesop created narratives that are appealing, funny, politically astute, and profoundly true. And Aesop’s truth—often summed up in the pithy “moral of the story”—retains an awesome power to affect us, reaching us through both our intellects and our hearts. Including: “The Fox and the Grapes” “The Ants and the Grasshopper” “The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse” …and 200 Other Famous Fables Edited and with an Afterword by Jack Zipes With an Introduction by Sam Pickering
