Book The Mosaic Constitution

Download or read book The Mosaic Constitution written by Graham Hammill and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a common belief that scripture has no place in modern, secular politics. Graham Hammill challenges this notion in The Mosaic Constitution, arguing that Moses’s constitution of Israel, which created people bound by the rule of law, was central to early modern writings about government and state. Hammill shows how political writers from Machiavelli to Spinoza drew on Mosaic narrative to imagine constitutional forms of government. At the same time, literary writers like Christopher Marlowe, Michael Drayton, and John Milton turned to Hebrew scripture to probe such fundamental divisions as those between populace and multitude, citizenship and race, and obedience and individual choice. As these writers used biblical narrative to fuse politics with the creative resources of language, Mosaic narrative also gave them a means for exploring divine authority as a product of literary imagination. The first book to place Hebrew scripture at the cutting edge of seventeenth-century literary and political innovation, The Mosaic Constitution offers a fresh perspective on political theology and the relations between literary representation and the founding of political communities.

Book Modern Jewish Philosophy and the Politics of Divine Violence

Download or read book Modern Jewish Philosophy and the Politics of Divine Violence written by Daniel H. Weiss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is commitment to God compatible with modern citizenship? In this book, Daniel H. Weiss provides new readings of four modern Jewish philosophers – Moses Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and Walter Benjamin – in light of classical rabbinic accounts of God's sovereignty, divine and human violence, and the embodied human being as the image of God. He demonstrates how classical rabbinic literature is relevant to contemporary political and philosophical debates. Weiss brings to light striking political aspects of the writings of the modern Jewish philosophers, who have often been understood as non-political. In addition, he shows how the four modern thinkers are more radical and more shaped by Jewish tradition than has previously been thought. Taken as a whole, Weiss' book argues for a fundamental rethinking of the relationship between Judaism and politics, the history of Jewish thought, and the ethical and political dynamics of the broader Western philosophical tradition.

Book Europe s Constitutional Mosaic

Download or read book Europe s Constitutional Mosaic written by Neil Walker and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emerged from an extended seminar series held in Edinburgh Law School which sought to explore the complex constitutional arrangements of the European legal space as an inter-connected mosaic. There has been much recent debate concerning the constitutional future of Europe, focusing almost exclusively upon the EU in the context of the (failed) Constitutional Treaty of 2003-5 and the subsequent Treatyof Lisbon. The premise of the book is that this focus, while indispensable, offers only a partial vision of the complex constitutional terrain of contemporary Europe. In addition, it is ess.

Book Theocracy Secularism and Islam in Turkey

Download or read book Theocracy Secularism and Islam in Turkey written by Christopher Houston and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel and lucid work, Christopher Houston clarifies a particular modern style and practice of politics that he calls anthropocracy. In the name of popular sovereignty, anthropocracies de-legitimize the rule of God(s) even as they re-deploy it to stabilize the rule of the representatives of the people, all the while obfuscating their political conscription of the divine. In distinguishing anthropocracy from varieties of other secular and laicist political arrangements, as well as from theocracy, this book also gives readers a brilliant solution to what it calls the Turkish puzzle, the dilemma over how to best describe and analyze state-religion and state-society relations in the Turkish Republic. This work convincingly undermines two orthodox presumptions about Turkish politics: the claim that Turkish modernity should be considered an example of secularity; and the accusation that the current AKP government should be interpreted as Islamic. On the contrary, it argues that both Kemalism and the AKP continue to institute an anthropocratic Republic.

Book excerpt: What would the Law of Moses look like if enacted by a modern-day government? This beautiful volume answers that question. For the first time, each and every provision of the Law found in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers has been painstakingly organized and codified in a manner similar to what one would find in a modern statute book. With an excellent cross-reference table, and numerous comments and annotations, this volume is ideal for anyone interested in the ancient code of Moses. This unique statute book makes it easy to grasp the legal system handed down at Sinai. From a methodical description of how many lambs were to be sacrificed on a particular holiday, to the penalties for various crimes, to the laws on environmental protection, and provisions relating to inheritance and the family, this book contains every element of the Law of Moses. Like a modern legal code, the book is organized into 23 Titles, including a Family Code, Probate Code, Penal Code, Rules of Judicial Procedure, Business and Commerce Code, and many others. Each Title is catergorized into chapters, sections, and subsections. Never before has the Law of Moses been presented in such a clear manner. This book makes the perfect gift for a law student, a leader of bible studies, or anyone curious about this ancient body of Law that has so shaped our world.
