Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Instruction of Children Moral education is everywhere acknowledged to be the most important part of all education; but there has not been the same agreement in regard to the best means of securinglit in the school. This has been due in part to a want of insight into the two fold nature of this sort of' education; for instruction in morals includes two things: the formation of right ideas and the formation of right habits. Right ideas are necessary to guide the will, but right habits are the product of the will itself. It is possible to have right ideas to some extent without the corresponding moral habits. On this account the formation of correct habits has been esteemed by some to be the chief thing. But nu conscious habits - mere use and wont - do not seem to deserve the title of moral in its highest sense. The moral act should be a considerate one, and rest on the adoption of principles to guide one's actions. To those who lay stress on the practical side and demand the formation of correct habits, the school as it is seems to be a great ethical instrumentality. Book Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story Classic Reprint written by J. A. Churchill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story It is a matter of vital concern to those who have the interests of theeq nation at heart that ways and means be developed to give the children of our schools education along the lines of character building. That the children of today are the citizens of tomorrow is a truism makes it none the less imperative that we give careful heed to the kind of character material we are putting, or allowing to be put, into the moral structure of those future citizens. More and more the realization is growing that the school has not been doing all that it can in this important matter, and more and more firmly is the conviction being forced upon those who are thinking in terms of national interest that the school must take over as a definite part of its work the moral instruction of the children. We need to appreciate the fact that the child begins life ignorant of the moral experience of previous generations, 'and minus the consequent moral wisdom. He must learn to speak the truth, to be kind, to obey, to do his share of the world's work, to serve the good. If he is to progress above the former level, he must be put into touch with that previous experience. And it is not enough for his best development that he be put in touch with it in the hit or miss way of the chance contacts with ordinary life. He must be made the possessor of the accumulated moral knowledge of the race. As he is trained according to carefully developed plan's in other branches of knowledge, so must he be in this. Only so can we hope to have a mass of citizens whose purposes and ambitions are in accord with our national standards and traditions and the ever expanding ideals of civilization. The state department of education believes that results can be obtained in moral instruction through the use of stories which illustrate the virtues. In this pamphlet, arranged according to grades, are listed a number of stories illustrating particular virtues, which, as a result of a questionnaire sent out to the teachers of the state, it is considered desirable to try to inculcate in the lives of the children. Under each virtue several stories are given, with reference to the books where they may be found. Under the subject, Respect and Reverence, reference is made in each grade to Ethical Readings from the Bible. Teachers will find many passages referring to each of several virtues. They should make whatever selection that seems best suited to their needs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The mother's smile. The motherless girls. The Child's dependence on its mother for Speech, health, etc. I AM sure you will like this picture. It looks dark at first. That is because there is a shade over the lamp which stands on the table. A little light comes in at the cottage window, for the morning is just beginning to dawn. You can see the beams across the ceiling plain country chairs and there is something lying on a rough bed across two of these Chairs; and there are four people. One is'the doctor, whose Chin rests on his hand, as he looks upon the some thing stretched on the bed. On the bed lies a child about six years Old, his curly head half hidden in a pillow, his hand hanging over as if it were too weak to clasp anything. Perhaps the doctor will presently whisper that this dear child is dying. Near the window stands the father; his face is sad; his lips are pressed tight; he is watching the doctor. And you can see another person, though you cannot behold her face, for She is leaning her head on her arm, and her arms lie on a table, and her hands are clasped together. Though you cannot View her face, you know the mother is crying. This picture was painted by Mr. Luke Fildes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Rule Series: The Golden Door Book; A School Reader This Series of books embodies a graded system of moral instruction. The method of instruction involved in the Scheme is the indirect method. It introduces the pupil, in a concrete and interesting manner, to the subject matter of morals, by means of fairy tale, myth, fable, allegory, parable, legend, stories of real life, of heroes and heroines, biography, and historical incident. This method was adopted in preference to the more formal, direct, and didactic methods, because of an induction based on a questionnaire circulated among the teachers of ten cities, nearly ninety-five percent of whom favored the indirect method. This induction is supported, also, by investigations relating to the moral nature in the field of child psychology, and the psychology of the first years of adolescence. Book Manual for the Religious and Moral Instruction

Download or read book Manual for the Religious and Moral Instruction written by Samuel Wilderspin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for the Religious and Moral Instruction: Of Young Children in the Nursery and Infant School Religious Education is the most important part of instruction, and pure religious principles the only true foundation of right action. To this effect I have fully expressed myself in my other publications; and have always endeavoured to provide for such instruction in the numerous schools that I have organised, by furnishing an ample supply of select portions of Scripture illustrated by coloured plates. These pictures are of great importance in educating the very young, as they win the attention, and give more clear ideas. They chiefly consist of the miracles and parables of our Saviour, to which simple histories from the Old Testament are added, together with the Lord's Prayer, Ten Commandments, and Apostles' Creed. Select hymns from Watts, Jane Taylor, and others, I have been accustomed to teach; but it appeared to me that a series more simple in style and encouraging in sentiment was much wanted. It should always be our endeavour to impress upon the young mind a high notion of the happiness of true religion, the purity of the Christian character, and the greatness and goodness of God. To lead up infant minds to Him, through the works of creation, I have ever found one of the most effectual modes of instruction. Simple hymns, level to their unfolding understandings, they learn with ease; and it is hoped that several such will be found in this Manual. I first became acquainted with Mr. Terrington, who has assisted me in this work, by being invited over to Hull, to re-organise and train two infant schools which had been established on my plans about eighteen years, and this intercourse led to conversations on the subject of religious education, in which our views very closely coincided; and we therefore determined to unite our efforts for the production of the present work. A large portion of the pieces are by him, as he could write verse with greater facility - but these, for sentiment and style, have my most cordial approval, and long experience leads me to suppose that they are well adapted to the tender mind of a little child. We cannot present truth to it in a too simple, plain, and encouraging manner, or too soon make known the elementary and fundamental truths of Christianity - redemption and sanctification - in their practical bearings. It must however be constantly borne in mind that an overdoing is frequently an undoing, and that a little distinctly understood is far better than much held unintelligibly. The following hymns can be read to children, and some committed to memory by dictation, and sung. Singing is a great aid to instruction, especially in an infant school. The same can be done with the moral songs, and children can have them explained, and be questioned upon them.
