Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Adjustments of the Christian Life Then again, many of the difficulties of the christian life which perplex the most scrupulous and morbidly conscientious seem. To be so often omitted from the discussion in works otherwise clear and complete in their statement of the general principles of the adjust ment of christian conduct at the beginning of a new life in moral and spiritual things. Thoughts and advices most needed by this class of seekers and christians are usually the ones least discussed. There is a class of seekers who need and should have simply the main points and obliga tions of repentance and faith, for their perplexity arises mostly from rebellion against conviction of duty. But the former class needs instruction more than denuncia tion or exhortation. This book will help both classes, but is aimed more particularly for the former. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morals of Christ: A Comparison With Contemporaneous Systems For, he says, On these two commandments (positive) hang all the Law and the Prophets (negative); or, when he generalizes st'ill farther these same commandments into the Golden Rule - one positive precept Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do ye even so to them; and so fulfill the Law and the Prophets. The Mosaic morality said, in substance, DO nothing that is wrong; the morality of Christ, DO everything that is right. The substance of the former is, Thou shalt do no evil; that of the latter, Thou shalt do good; the substantial command of the former, Thou shalt not hate that of the latter, Thou shalt love; the principle of the former, justice; that of the latter, benevolence. The Ten Commandments might more appropriately be called the Ten Prohibitions; while the Sermon on the Mount is the real commandment. In the Old Testament there was restraint and warning put upon the moral man; in the New, liberty and impulse. In the former man was a slave, under bonds against vice; in the latter he is free, under incentives to virtue. The Mosaic morality said substantially, Do nothing in morality, lest it be an injury the Christian morality said, Do some thing in morality, since it may be good. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Life in the Modern World These questions have created in many thoughtful minds a profound sense of perplexity, and even of alarm. The world which confronts a modern man is very different from the provincial and primitive environment of the New Testament teaching; but even though this new world is less likely than that of Crete to produce liars, beasts, and glut tons, it seems quite as hard to adjust to the maxims of the Christian Gospel. A modern man, for example, finds himself compelled by circum stances to devote two-thirds of his waking hours to the making of his living and the securing of a margin of income, but when he turns, in some hastily snatched interval, to the New Testament,4 the christian life IN the modern world. Book A System of Moral Philosophy Or Christian Ethics

Download or read book A System of Moral Philosophy Or Christian Ethics written by William B. Lacey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Moral Philosophy, or Christian Ethics: Designed for the Use of Parents in Their Domestic Instruction, Advanced Classes in Sunday Schools, and Literary Institutes That moral culture, in the training of human beings, Ought to be an Object of primary and solicitous attention, is too plain to be denied. The adaptations and capacities of the youthful mind; its quick susceptibilities of moral and religious truth, and the highest interests of the social state, all declare, in language not to be misunderstood, the duty of parents in this respect. SO clear is the voice of reason in regard to the improvement of the moral powers, that all na tions have bowed to her decision. History presents on every page the solemn and admonitory fact, that a recklessness Of moral culture is productive Of the most unhappy results. Be the power and wealth of nations, Or individuals, what they may, if they are destitute of moral principles, they will be fruitful sources of human wretchedness. The command ment, to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, is so congenial with the public interest, that nature seems to abhor, and stamp with maledictions all who disre gardit.' The most splendid and fascinating acquirements, when substituted for morality, will be only coverings of gos samer, heightening, by way Of contrast, the internal deformi ties Of character. Book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint written by George Burman Foster and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Its Modern Expression George Burman Foster was born on the second of April, 1857, and died on the twenty-second of December, 1918. Prior to his occupancy of the chair of the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Chicago he was Professor of Systematic The ology in the Divinity School of the same institution. The pres ent volume embodies his lectures on the dogmatics and ethics of the Christian religion in the form in which these were last delivered to his theological classes. The main body of the book is made up of the dictated portion of the lectures. The foot-notes contain a report, also practically verbatim, of elabora tions and extemporaneous remarks introduced by the lecturer at the indicated points of the main discussion. Former students will recognize here especially many of the brilliant and memorable sayings of this inspiring and thought-provoking teacher. Professor Poster was a remarkably sympathetic interpreter of points of view other than his own. But in his exposition of the appreciations and viewpoint of the Christian religious man, one knew that it was not a case of understanding through mere sympathetic imagination; he was speaking out of the depths of his own experience. He knew what religion was, for it was his daily life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Happiness and the Christian Moral Life

Download or read book Happiness and the Christian Moral Life written by Paul J. Wadell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Happiness and the Christian Moral Life introduces students to Christian ethics through the lens of happiness. The book suggests that the heart of ethics is not rules and obligations but our deep desire for happiness and fulfillment. We achieve that happiness when we become people who love the good and seek it in everything we do. The third edition of this reader-friendly text has been revised and updated throughout. It introduces Christian ethics with sensitivity towards readers who may not be Christian themselves. After an overview of basic concepts and key thinkers such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, subsequent chapters explore the importance of narrative in Christian ethics, the place of friendship and community in Christian moral life, the role of virtues in our quest for fulfillment, a Christian understanding of the person, a Christian theology of freedom, and false steps on the path to happiness. Final chapters discuss the role of conscience and prudence, love, and justice. The third edition has been re-structured to better meet teaching needs by moving the discussion of narrative earlier in the book. This edition features fresh, global examples; revised introductions to key thinkers; discussions of tough, contemporary topics such as hook-up culture; careful consideration of the words of Pope Francis on themes ranging from consumerism and freedom to love and the environment; and more.

Book Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments

Download or read book Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments written by Brevard S. Childs and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 1993-04 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work is the first comprehensive biblical theology to appear in many years and is the culmination of Brevard Child's lifelong commitment to constructing a biblical theology that surmounts objections to the discipline raised over the past generation. Childs rejects any approaches that overstress either the continuity or discontinuity between the Old and New Testaments. He refuses to follow the common pattern in Christian thought of identifying biblical theology with the New Testament's interest in the Old. Rather, Childs maps out an approach that reflects on the whole Christian Bible with its two very different voices, each of which retains continuing integrity and is heard on its own terms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poet of Science: And Other Addresses In this little volume have been collected a number of addresses prepared for various occasions, mostly within the last few years. I have had a sufficiently partial judgment to fancy that they might be worthy of-the limited immortality conferred by printers ink. They deal with a variety of topics, and bear to each other no relation of mutual dependence. There is, however, one general thought upon which all of them in one way or another have some bearing. That thought is the adjustment of Christian faith and life and institutions to the ever-changing conditions which come with the lapse of time. Underlying all of them is the conviction that the great need of the moral life of humanity in our own age and in every age is "not a new Gospel, but the Gospel anew." Most of the addresses have been published substantially in the form in which they were delivered. A few of them have been considerably altered in adaptation to present conditions.
