Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Adjustments of the Christian Life Then again, many of the difficulties of the christian life which perplex the most scrupulous and morbidly conscientious seem. To be so often omitted from the discussion in works otherwise clear and complete in their statement of the general principles of the adjust ment of christian conduct at the beginning of a new life in moral and spiritual things. Thoughts and advices most needed by this class of seekers and christians are usually the ones least discussed. There is a class of seekers who need and should have simply the main points and obliga tions of repentance and faith, for their perplexity arises mostly from rebellion against conviction of duty. But the former class needs instruction more than denuncia tion or exhortation. This book will help both classes, but is aimed more particularly for the former. Book Bible and Ethics in the Christian Life

Download or read book Bible and Ethics in the Christian Life written by Bruce C. Birch and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth is changing in ways it hasn't for hundreds of thousands of years. At the same time, Christianity is breaking away from its millennium-long geographical and cultural center in the Euro-West. Its growth is in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, primarily in Pentecostal, evangelical, and independent churches. These dramatically changed planetary and ecclesial landscapes have led many to conclude that we need a new way of thinking about our collective existence: who are we and what is the nature of our responsibility in this deeply altered world? To address that question, biblical scholars Bruce C. Birch and Jacqueline E. Lapsley and Christian ethicists Larry L. Rasmussen and Cynthia Moe-Lobeda carry on "a new conversation" that engages how Christians are to understand the authority and use of Scripture, the basic elements of any full-bodied Christian ethic attuned to our circumstances, and the nature of our responsibility to our planetary neighbors and creation itself.

Book Our Moral Life in Christ College Edition

Download or read book Our Moral Life in Christ College Edition written by Peter V. Armenio and published by Midwest Theological Forum. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This college edition of Our Moral Life in Christ by Rev. Peter Armenio focuses on the Person and teachings of Christ and examines the moral life from that perspective. Christian morality is not only for "knowing," but also for "living." This is a practical manner in which the spirit of Christ is made manifest in the world, thus contributing to the improvement of society. Based on the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, Our Moral Life in Christ presents the teachings of the Magisterium on moral issues in modern society. Inspired by recent papal documents, especially the encyclical The Splendor of Truth, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this book provides the moral formation that will help the reader to become more Christlike in service of love and in the journey toward personal perfection as well as providing the foundation to pursue advanced theological studies.

Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries—what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? It's easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of dos and don'ts. Nor is it a prescription to "follow your heart" wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bible's call for a revolution—a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives. We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while we're here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.

Download or read book Guide to Christian Living written by George V. Lobo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-28 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all the theological disciplines, perhaps moral theology has felt the impact of the conciliar renewal most. There has been a mass of excellent literature calling for a synthetic presentation. At the same time, a more flexible and dynamic ethic based on the Gospel values of love and freedom, while it has undoubtedly deepened the Christian life of many, has also caused not a little confusion in the minds of many. There are endless discussions on burning issues like contraception and abortion which often do not end in any satisfactory conclusion because the general principles for ethical decision are not clear. There is also a polarization between conservatives and progressives which leaves the neutral observer puzzled. This book is written to clarify the basic issues in Christian ethics in an age of secularism and pluralism. Although it can be taken as a treatise on General Moral Theology, this book is addressed to a wider audience than students of theology. It is meant to be a guide to Christian Living according to Vatican II. It seeks to transcend the unfortunate dichotomy between 'moral' and 'spiritual' theology as the Council clearly wanted when it spoke of the subject of moral theology as the Christian vocation of the faithful, and their obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world. While discussing the basic principles of Christian ethics, the main preoccupation has been to discover an approach to moral decision that would safeguard all the moral values in a given situation. The broad orientations for moral guidance today have been brought out in several places. Special attention has been given to the question of moral absolutes as it is central to ethical discourse now. The ecumenical spirit, common preoccupations, and a shared respect for the Word of God have brought Catholic and Protestant moral theology closer. Hence an effort has been made to have a dialogue with the theologians of the Reformed tradition. The strong influence of Protestant ethical writers on current Catholic moral theology has been brought out.

Book Spirit Ethics

Download or read book Spirit Ethics written by Paul T. Jersild and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christians responsibly derive moral guidance from the Bible on pressing issues of personal and social morality today? Jersild's book sets the context for a study of Scripture and the moral life in a postmodern, pluralist society with its impact on biblical studies. The ethical contents and authority of Scripture are addressed, and a "Spirit ethics" is proposed as a way of developing a biblically based Christian ethics. Christians cannot simply adopt a once-and-for-all set of rules nor simply cite Bible verses against the latest sins. "Absolutely essential," says Jersild, "is the ongoing engagement of the church with the moral environment of society and the issues that this raises for the church." Jersild applies his model fruitfully and persuasively to three pressing and perplexing issues: assisted suicide, homosexuality, and genetic programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Christians, Holy Scripture is not only a source of revelation on which to ground one's faith, it is also an indispensable reference point for morality. They are convinced that in the Bible they can find indications and norms of right behaviour to attain fullness of life. This use of Scripture is not of course without its problems caused by the different times and circumstances in which people find themselves today compared with biblical times. In 2002, the Pontifical Biblical Commission, at the behest of the then-President Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, set about to examine the problem of the relationship between the Bible and morality by posing itself the question: what is the value and the significance of the inspired text for today's morality? This document seeks then to explain the context for norms of morality encountered in Scripture, and shows also that, while there remain moral questions which cannot be fully answered from Scripture, nevertheless Scripture does offer criteria which are helpful in finding solutions.

Download or read book The Christian Moral Life written by Timothy F. Sedgwick and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a re-issue of the 1999 edition, demonstrates that the way of life we call Christian is lived in relationships to others. Christian faith, understood as practical piety, calls for a life opened to the world at large, concerned for the "stranger" as well as for the neighbor. Sedgwick further emphasizes that the Christian life is grounded in the experience and worship of God. His work thus develops Christian ethics as "sacramental ethics," an ethic that has at its center a deepening encounter with God. Written in a style accessible to non-specialists, this book provides teachers, pastors, counselors, and general readers with an ideal introduction to Christian ethics. It renews the topic of Christian ethics by showing readers that faithful moral living is achieved through the daily practices of grace and godliness.
