Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Nautical Magazine, and Quarterly Review, Vol. 2: April to September, 1855 Among the many improvements of the past twelve years that have rendered nautical operations most valuable services in the improved adjustment of spars and canvas to ships, the well known rig of Robert B. Forbes, of Boston, stands foremost on the list, and deserves our especial commendation not, however, because of its general introduction on board of all large ships, for it has not yet received the attention from ship-owners and mas ters to which it is eminently entitled, but because its advantages affecting economy, safety, and convenience, excel all others. It very rarely happens that a few brief years are sufficient to fur nish time for a popular appreciation of any important innova tion upon habits, whether mechanical, commercial, or nautical. The modest oscillations of science are seldom heeded, till the wave of progress falls as breakers at our feet, and we are com pelled to move before the advancing flood. The noble and the generous of earth's inventive children impatiently wait the rising tide of destiny, that eventually carries all reforms forward upon the voyage of progress. In obedience to the impressions of duty, we shall, therefore, proceed to lay before our readers the advan tages of the Forbes's Rig, promising first, that the present arti cle will be continued in the next number, in which will also ap pear a beautiful lithograph of the new packet-ship Aurora, commanded by Captain Bunting, of N ew-york. This splendid ship, a Liverpool packet, was built by Wm. H. Webb, in 1854, and is owned by Cornelius Grinnell, Esq., of N ew-york. Book The Monthly Nautical Magazine and Quarterly Commercial Review Vol 1

Download or read book The Monthly Nautical Magazine and Quarterly Commercial Review Vol 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Nautical Magazine and Quarterly Commercial Review, Vol. 1: October, 1854 March, 1855 It becomes an interesting question to every American mind whether the mechanical and commercial genius of the United States, which has nothing to fear when the terms are equal, but which now are, as they have long been, fearfully against us - as is but too clearly manifest in the workings of our warping ton nage laws - shall, for the future, be able to contend successfully, as heretofore, with a wealthy commercial power, now thoroughly aroused to the vital importance of preserving a position on the sea, which is essential to the independence of an insular nation ality, of the first class in the scale of nations, and which can only be done by possessing a large maritime population, which can be insured only by maintaining an immense mercantile navy; which, again, as has been proved by the nautical contest with this country, must ever be completely dependent on the qualities qf the ships that compose it. But a more deeply interesting question will agitate the tran quillity of every American bosom, whether we are willing to permit any obstacle, of whatever name, to interpose even doubt ful barriers to any enterprise whatever, undertaken by American navigators upon the face of the deep. To both of these ques tions the ship-builders of the United States are expected to fur nish answers in the work of their hands and heads. It is in order to enable them to insure a favorable solution to these problems, which are fairly before us for future demonstration, by furnishing the basis for advancing to a more elevated position for commanding the future excellences of our commercial eets, with the desire that our prosperous country shall continue to stand unrivalled in shipping in the waters of the globe, that this Press is dedicated to the maritime interests of the United States. Book Stories from the Wreckage

Download or read book Stories from the Wreckage written by John Odin Jensen and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2019-04-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every shipwreck has a story that extends far beyond its tragic end. The dramatic tales of disaster, heroism, and folly become even more compelling when viewed as junction points in history—connecting to stories about the frontier, the environment, immigration, politics, technology, and industry. In Stories from the Wreckage, John Odin Jensen examines a selection of Great Lakes shipwrecks of the wooden age for a deeper dive into this transformative chapter of maritime history. He mines the archeological evidence and historic record to show how their tragic ends fit in with the larger narrative of Midwestern history. Featuring the underwater photography of maritime archeologist Tamara Thomsen, this vibrant volume is a must-have for shipping enthusiasts as well as anyone interested in the power of water to shape history.

Book The View from the Masthead

Download or read book The View from the Masthead written by Hester Blum and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With long, solitary periods at sea, far from literary and cultural centers, sailors comprise a remarkable population of readers and writers. Although their contributions have been little recognized in literary history, seamen were important figures in the nineteenth-century American literary sphere. In the first book to explore their unique contribution to literary culture, Hester Blum examines the first-person narratives of working sailors, from little-known sea tales to more famous works by Herman Melville, James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, and Richard Henry Dana. In their narratives, sailors wrote about how their working lives coexisted with--indeed, mutually drove--their imaginative lives. Even at leisure, they were always on the job site. Blum analyzes seamen's libraries, Barbary captivity narratives, naval memoirs, writings about the Galapagos Islands, Melville's sea vision, and the crisis of death and burial at sea. She argues that the extent of sailors' literacy and the range of their reading were unusual for a laboring class, belying the popular image of Jack Tar as merely a swaggering, profane, or marginal figure. As Blum demonstrates, seamen's narratives propose a method for aligning labor and contemplation that has broader applications for the study of American literature and history.
