Book The Monster Hunter in Modern Popular Culture

Download or read book The Monster Hunter in Modern Popular Culture written by Heather L. Duda and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As monsters in popular media have evolved and grown more complex, so have those who take on the job of stalking and staking them. This book examines the evolution of the contemporary monster hunter from Bram Stoker's Abraham Van Helsing to today's non-traditional monster hunters such as Blade, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Watchmen. Critically surveying a diverse range of books, films, television shows, and graphic novels, this study reveals how the monster hunter began as a white, upper-class, educated male and became everything from a vampire to a teenage girl with supernatural powers. Now often resembling the monsters they've vowed to conquer, modern characters occupy a gray area where the battle is often with their own inner natures as much as with the "evil" they fight.

Book Discorrelated Images

Download or read book Discorrelated Images written by Shane Denson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Discorrelated Images Shane Denson examines how computer-generated digital images displace and transform the traditional spatial and temporal relationships that viewers had with conventional analog forms of cinema. Denson analyzes works ranging from the Transformers series and Blade Runner 2049 to videogames and multimedia installations to show how what he calls discorrelated images—images that do not correlate with the abilities and limits of human perception—produce new subjectivities, affects, and potentials for perception and action. Denson's theorization suggests that new media theory and its focus on technological development must now be inseparable from film and cinema theory. There's more at stake in understanding discorrelated images, Denson contends, than just a reshaping of cinema, the development of new technical imaging processes, and the evolution of film and media studies: discorrelated images herald a transformation of subjectivity itself and are essential to our ability to comprehend nonhuman agency.

Her life had been a living hell until that one summer she had spent with her grandparents in New Orleans. That’s when she met three of the most handsome men she’d ever seen who not only took her breath away, but made her wolf do a jig inside her. For that one week, running in the sand with the moonlight upon them, Claire had found her escape from the nightmares, or so she thought. Bryce Marlow was an alpha and always knew he’d be the dominant one in his family unit. Claiming Ivan and Felix had been challenging to say the least, but when the three of them had seen Claire on the beach that night they all knew they were looking at their heart and soul. However, one look into those haunting eyes and the three of them realized that whatever time it took, they would erase those nightmares to replace them with hope and their love.

Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption's house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth, and the answer to the question--How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist? She was the 10th woman to be sentenced to death in the USA since the death penalty resumed in 1976. Convicted for the murder of six men, in a two month period, Aileen claimed she acted in self defence however the investigation into these claims was poor and she later retracted her statement announcing to the Supreme Court, "I'm one who seriously hates human life and would kill again." All-too-often female prostitutes have been the victims of male serial killers - the killings of Aileen 'Lee' Wuornos were the inverse of this. She was a child prostitute, fleeing an abusive childhood at the hands of her grandparents, which led straight into a disastrous adulthood of difficult affairs with both men and women. Her metamorphosis from victim to attacker had brutal consequences: a stream of dead men. Following a renewed interest in this woman after the film "Monster", this is her story in her own words.
