Book Christ the Ideal of the Monk Unabridged

Download or read book Christ the Ideal of the Monk Unabridged written by Columba Marmion and published by . This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every vocation, even the simple Christian vocation, comes from God. Our Lord Himself says 'No man can come to Me, except the Father draw him.' But it is God's love for us-and as we are born miserable, it is His merciful love-which is the origin of this call." A work which goes to the heart of the Rule of St Benedict, this classic of the Irish Benedictine Blessed Columba Marmion has fed generations of God-seeking souls. Capable of touching the heart of anyone drawn to the monastic virtues, it is a book which grounds every aspect of the religious life in the person of Christ. "All the Divine mercies towards us have for their first principle this invitation to share, by adoption, in the Sonship of Christ Jesus," writes Abbot Marmion. "The monastic vocation itself only aims at perfecting this adoption, at making it more extensive, by a deeper participation in Christ's grace, by a more finished imitation of the Divine Model." Drawing on centuries of tradition and monastic literature as well as decades of personal experience as a monk and father of souls, Abbot Marmion presents monastic observance in a way which is both accessible and profound. In the foreword to this new edition, Abbot Xavier Perrin says of this book: "Full of wisdom and simplicity, it provides an almost complete commentary on the Rule. One feels in it the power of the Gospel and the real grandeur of monasticism. It is able to give to monks and nuns, oblates and friends of monasteries, as well as to many Christians, a renewed trust in Christ and in St Benedict's sure guidance." This centenary edition features entirely re-typeset, corrected references, new translations of all of Marmion's Latin quotations, and a new foreword by Abbot Xavier Perrin.

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Monastic Practices written by Charles Cummings and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three decades, Monastic Practices has been a valued resource for English-speaking aspirants to monastic life. In this revised edition, updated and expanded, Charles Cummings, OCSO, explores the common practices of the monastic life in order to rediscover them as viable means of leading persons to a deeper encounter with God. How do monks and nuns occupy themselves throughout the day? Have they modernized their lifestyle or is it still cluttered with medieval customs? Could any of the monastic practices be of use to those outside the monastery? A certain wisdom is necessary to know how to use such practices and how to give oneself to them until they lead one to God. After long monastic experience, Cummings shows us how the ordinary things we do constitute our path to God. In the art of living life, he argues, we are always beginners, searching for God through our concrete circumstances and actions.

Book The Relevance of a Religious or Monastic Vocation

Download or read book The Relevance of a Religious or Monastic Vocation written by Collectif and published by Les Presses de Taizé. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2015 was the centenary of Brother Roger’s birth and the tenth anniversary of his death. As part of this special year, an international colloquium brought to Taizé 350 young women and men committed to the monastic or religious life—Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox from 52 countries. During a week of sharing, they reflected on the founder of the Taizé Community’s specific contribution to the “great tree of monastic life” on which Taizé is “a simple bud which has been grafted on,” as he used to say. And they pondered the meaning of their vocation today and its relevance for the twenty-first century. The contributions that formed the background for their searching have been brought together in this book. They represent a whole range of experiences: from the meditation of a Coptic bishop from Egypt, where monasticism began, to the echoes of twentieth-century creations such as Protestant communities like the sisters of Grandchamp in Switzerland or of Emmanuel in Cameroun, the Orthodox communities of Kovilj in Serbia or Saint Nicholas of Gomel in Belarus, Anglican sisters in Bristol, England, or the Catholic Little Sisters of Jesus of Charles de Foucauld. Age-old monastic or religious traditions are expressed in particular through the voices of Mother Iakovi, abbess of an Athonite monastery in Greece, Adolfo Nicolás, General of the Jesuits, Bruno Cadoré, Master General of the Dominicans, Marcellin Theeuwes, former Prior General of the Carthusians, Olivier Quenardel, Abbot of Citeaux, Richard Baawobr, Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa, and Michael Perry, Minister General of the Franciscans.

Book Vocations and Their Formation Today

Download or read book Vocations and Their Formation Today written by Guy Lespinay and published by Alba House Society of St. Paul. This book was released on 2010 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formation in religious life is a very complex matter. Indeed, it has become even more so since we live in a time of doubt and uncertainty when religious houses are closing and more than a few religious communities are facing the possibility of extinction for lack of vocations. Yet, while it is neither popular, nor easy to speak positively of religious life, and much less of formation for religious life, we must find the courage to do so! The formation plan has to be clear, yet, in its clarity, it must not become too rigid. The author sets out a number of priorities and responsibilities in which the first person responsible for discernment and growth is the candidate himself. Without devoting special chapters to each group, he considers the differences between monasteries and apostolic congregations focusing a remark here and there, for example, on the difficulties met in contemplative monasteries where those in formation are few and formation can last 6 to 8 years without a change of spiritual guide. This book is extremely valuable for the way in which it draws our attention to details frequently assumed (and thus often forgotten), reminding us that the young candidate to religious life is truly representative of his or her generation. The work also points out a number of snares into which formation communities may fall, e.g., harshly critiquing the candidate or using those in formation as household servants. These pitfalls are easily and best avoided! In short, this is a solid, straightforward and faithful book that avoids indulging in illusions as it outlines conditions for a positive journey along the path of formation in religious communities today. Book The Monkhood of All Believers

Download or read book The Monkhood of All Believers written by Greg Peters and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the institution of monasticism has existed in the Christian church since the first century, it is often misunderstood. Greg Peters, an expert in monastic studies, reintroduces historic monasticism to the Protestant church, articulating a monastic spirituality for all believers. As Peters explains, what we have known as monasticism for the past 1,500 years is actually a modified version of the earliest monastic life, which was not necessarily characterized by poverty, chastity, and obedience but rather by one's single-minded focus on God--a single-mindedness rooted in one's baptismal vows and the priesthood of all believers. Peters argues that all monks are Christians, but all Christians are also monks. To be a monk, one must first and foremost be singled-minded toward God. This book presents a theology of monasticism for the whole church, offering a vision of Christian spirituality that brings together important elements of history and practice. The author connects monasticism to movements in contemporary spiritual formation, helping readers understand how monastic practices can be a resource for exploring a robust spiritual life.

Book Domestic Monastery

Download or read book Domestic Monastery written by Ronald Rolheiser and published by . This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a monastery? A monastery is a place set apart--a place to learn the blessings of powerlessness, and that time is not ours but God's. Our home and our duties can, just like a monastery, teach us those things. The vocation of monastic men and women is to physically withdraw from the world. But the principle is equally valid for those of us who cannot go off to monasteries. Certain vocations offer the same kind of opportunity for contemplation, and provide a desert for reflection. In ten brief and powerful chapters, Fr. Ron explores how monastery life can apply to those who don't live in a cloister: * Monasticism and Family Life * The Domestic Monastery * Real Friendship * Lessons from the Monastic Cell * Ritual for Sustaining Prayer * Tensions within Spirituality * A Spirituality of Parenting * Spirituality and the Seasons of Our Lives * The Sacredness of Time * Life's Key Question
