Book The Molecular Organography of Plants

Download or read book The Molecular Organography of Plants written by Quentin C. B. Cronk and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of plant evolution has been one of increasing complexity. The field of 'evo-devo' (evolution of development) seeks to explain this diversity by examining the evolution of the molecular and developmental processes responsible for plant form. This book surveys the structural complexity of plant form within this new framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preface to the first edition ofthis book, we expressed a conviction that there was a need for a short book that highlighted important advances in the new discipline of plant molecular biology. The rapid development of this topic has been brought about by the recognition of the unique properties of plants in the study of growth and development together with the application of recombinant DNA techniques to tackle these problems. Plant cells contain DNA in nuclei, plastids and mitochondria, and so offer the unique challenge of studying the interaction of three separate genetic systems in a single organism. The molecular approach has provided, in recent years, a wealth of important information about how plants function, and how they interact with bacteria, fungi and viruses. Furthermore, plant development involves the regulation of gene expression in response to intern al and external signals, and plant molecular biology has provided a fundamental insight into how this development is regulated. This is not only of considerable scientific interest, but also has important implications for the production of plants and plant products in agriculture, horticulture and the food industries.

Book Molecular Plant Development

Download or read book Molecular Plant Development written by Peter Westhoff and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in developmental biology has exploded in recent years with the use of molecular techniques. There are some excellent textbooks on animal systems, but they make only a token gesture towards plants. For this book, Peter Westhoff and his strong team of co-authors have taken great painsto prepare a clear, integrated textbook for undergraduate and graduate students studying the molecular and developmental biology of plants. Pedagogical features include boxes and definitions, two-colour text and illustrations throughout, and an extensive glossary. A short format has been chosendeliberately to keep the information concise, while building on basic knowledge which is treated in more elementary textbooks and referring to additional work in a commented bibliography.

Book Plant Molecular Biology Manual

Download or read book Plant Molecular Biology Manual written by Stanton Gelvin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years ago, the first edition of the Plant Molecular Biology Manual appeared. At that time, the editors felt that the field of plant molecular biology had matured to a point that the publication of a series of protocols in plant molecular biology was warranted. During the past five years, the field of plant molecular biology has expanded rapidly. This expansion is, among other things, reflected by the presence of several journals in the plant sciences, as well as by the increasing amount of plant sciences articles that are published in the more general journals. In 1991 approximately 3000 people attended the Third International Congress of Plant Molecular Biology in Tucson, Arizona, where more than 2000 posters were presented. It is also remarkable to see that nowadays botanical and physiological meetings pay a considerable amount of attention to plant molecular biology. Since the first edition of this manual appeared, we have published, yearly, a series of supplements to the original volume. These supplements covered new subjects and described new methods that had been developed. With time, however, the editors realized that the original manual plus supplements had become cumbersome to use, and we decided to publish a reorganized version of the manual.

Book 10 Years Plant Molecular Biology

Download or read book 10 Years Plant Molecular Biology written by R.A. Schilperoort and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is very clear nowadays that plants offer several opportunities for basic studies, e.g. on development and embryogenesis, and that the fundamental principles laid open contribute to the development of new tools for plant breeding. Within the scope of the present publication, the editors have had to make a difficult choice from the many important subjects that have contributed to the remarkable progress of our molecular biological understanding of complex biological problems. This has resulted in review papers showing the present state of the art in genetic engineering, gene expression and its manipulation, microbe and insect interactions with plants, transposable elements and gene tagging, plant and organ development, the function and structure of the genome chloroplasts, and lipid biosynthesis. All papers have been written in such a way that they are also useful for non-experts interested in a particular field, as well as for students following courses in plant molecular biology. Besides presenting the state of the art, each paper gives some historical background to the developments in the field as well as perspectives for further basic research and applications. Because of the latter, scientists and students engaged in plant breeding will also profit from this publication.

Book Plant Growth and Development

Download or read book Plant Growth and Development written by Donald E. Fosket and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Growth and Development: A Molecular Approach presents the field of plant development from both molecular and genetic perspectives. This field has evolved at a rapid rate over the past five years through the increasing exploitation of the remarkable plant Arabidopsis. The small genome, rapid life cycle, and ease of transformation of Arabidopsis, as well as the relatively large number of laboratories that are using this plant for their research, have lead to an exponential increase in information about plant development mechanisms. In Plant Growth and Development: A Molecular Approach Professor Fosket synthesizes this flood of new information in a way that conveys to students the excitement of this still growing field. His textbook is based on notes developed over more than ten years of teaching a course on the molecular analysis of plant growth and development and assumes no special knowledge of plant biology. It is intended for advanced undergraduates in plant development, as well as those in plant molecular biology. Graduate students and researchers who are just beginning to work in the field will also find much valuable information in this book. Each chapter concludes with questions for study and review as well as suggestions for further reading. Illustrated with two-color drawings and graphs throughout, and containing up-to-date and comprehensive coverage, Plant Growth and Development: A Molecular Approach will excite and inform students as it increases their understanding of plant science. * * Presents plant development from a molecular and cellular perspective * Illustrates concepts with two-colour diagrams throughout * Offers key study questions and guides to further reading within each chapter * Gives an up-to-date and thorough treatment of this increasingly important subject area * Derived from the author's many years of teaching plant developmental biology

Book Plant Evolutionary Developmental Biology

Download or read book Plant Evolutionary Developmental Biology written by Alessandro Minelli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to animals, plants have been largely neglected in evolutionary developmental biology. Mainstream research has focused on developmental genetics, while a rich body of knowledge in comparative morphology is still to be exploited. No integrated account is available. In this volume, Minelli fills this gap using the same approach he gave to animals, revisiting traditional concepts and providing an articulated analysis of genetic and molecular data. Topics covered include leaf complexity and the evolution of flower organs, handedness, branching patterns, flower symmetry and synorganization, and less conventional topics such as fractal patterns of plant organization. Also discussed is the hitherto neglected topic of the evolvability of temporal phenotypes like a plant's annual, biennial or perennial life cycle, flowering time and the timing of abscission of flower organs. This will be informative reading for anyone in the field of plant evo-devo, from students to lecturers and researchers.
