Book excerpt: "For 1,300 years, Chinese calligraphy was based on the elegant art of Wang Xizhi (A.D. 303–361). But the seventeenth-century emergence of a style modeled on the rough, broken epigraphs of ancient bronzes and stone artifacts brought a revolution in calligraphic taste. By the eighteenth century, this led to the formation of the stele school of calligraphy, which continues to shape Chinese calligraphy today.A dominant force in this school was the eminent calligrapher and art theorist Fu Shan (1607–1685). Because his work spans the late Ming–early Qing divide, it is an ideal prism through which to view the transformation in calligraphy.Rather than seek a single explanation for the change in calligraphic taste, the author demonstrates and analyzes the heterogeneity of the cultural, social, and political processes behind it. Among other subjects, the book covers the late Ming interaction between high and low culture; the role of publishing; the Ming loyalist response to the Qing; and early Qing changes in intellectual discourse. In addition to the usual approach of art historians, it adopts the theoretical perspectives of such fields as material culture, print culture, and social and intellectual history."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being in a foreign country, immersed in the great atmosphere of western culture, what is still in my heart is the quintessence of China, and the DNA of Chinese culture still flows in my blood. The United States is a multi-ethnic country, and the cultural essence of various ethnic groups blooms here like the flowers of spring. Chinese calligraphy, the gem of Chinese culture with a history of 3,000 years and the genius of the world that has shocked the history of art, has been splendid in this melting pot! The sages said: There are at least two aspects in life, one is life and the other is spirit. Once one settles in a foreign place, there will be spiritual pursuits; cultural factors will become active, childhood dreams will come into life, and flowers will bloom in the cradle of multiculturalism... In the educational world dominated by western culture, eastern culture and Chinese culture are not featured prominently, especially in art departments in universities. I am honored to be a practitioner and inheritor of Chinese calligraphy, and I am a frequent guest speaker in various schools and museums in New England, such as Harvard and Wellesley universities, giving lectures, demonstrations and exhibitions, etc. These invitations compensate for the neglect of Chinese calligraphy in the main curriculum and allow students to witness the creative process of Chinese calligraphy as an art form. In Asian art departments of western universities, there are capable people who study Chinese calligraphy theories from the perspective of westerners, but only a few who are capable of doing calligraphy. To answer this need I felt compelled to take up a teaching role, shuttling between colleges, high schools, and elementary schools.

Book Art as History

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Art as History written by Wen Fong and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an anthology and summation of the work of one of the world's leading historians of Chinese painting and calligraphy. Wen Fong helped create the field of East Asian art history during a distinguished five-decade career at Princeton University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Few if any writers in English have such a broad knowledge of the history and practice of Chinese painting and calligraphy. In this collection of some of his most recent essays, Fong gives a sweeping tour through the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy as he offers new and revised views on a broad range of important subjects. The topics addressed include "art as history," in which each art object preserves a moment in art's own significant history; the museum as a place of serious study and education; the close historical relationship between calligraphy and painting and their primacy among Chinese fine arts; the parallel development of representational painting and sculpture in early painting history; the greater significance of brushwork, seen abstractly as a means of personal expression by the artist, in later painting history; the paradigmatic importance of the master-to-follower lineage as a social force in shaping the continuity and directing the subtle changes in Chinese painting history; the role of collectors; and the critical necessity of authenticated works for establishing an accurate art history. Throughout the book, Fong skillfully combines close analysis and detailed contextualization of individual works to reveal how the study of Chinese painting and calligraphy yields deep insights about Chinese culture and history.
