Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visualization is the graphic presentation of data -- portrayals meant to reveal complex information at a glance. Think of the familiar map of the New York City subway system, or a diagram of the human brain. Successful visualizations are beautiful not only for their aesthetic design, but also for elegant layers of detail that efficiently generate insight and new understanding. This book examines the methods of two dozen visualization experts who approach their projects from a variety of perspectives -- as artists, designers, commentators, scientists, analysts, statisticians, and more. Together they demonstrate how visualization can help us make sense of the world. Book Capillary Electrophoresis of Proteins and Peptides

Download or read book Capillary Electrophoresis of Proteins and Peptides written by Mark A. Strege and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the more than 20 years that have followed the beginnings of capillary electrophoresis (CE), its application to the analysis of proteins and peptides has continued to be reliable, versatile, and productive. Over time, CE has matured to become a superb complement to HLPC, and in many cases has also evolved as an automated and quantitative replacement for conventional slab gel electrophoresis methods such as SDS-PAGE and isoelectric focusing. Within Capillary Electrophoresis of Proteins and Peptides, we have assembled contributions from researchers who are applying state-of-the-art CE for protein and peptide analysis, including topics that we believe are of great potential both in the present and for the future. In comparison to traditional separation methods, CE represents a miniaturized analysis technique (especially in its microchip-based format) that is highly dependent upon the basic fundamentals of effective sample recovery and high sensitivity detection. With these issues in mind, Chapters 1–4 describe recently developed approaches for both capillary coatings and analyte detection via laser-induced fluorescence. Since the discipline of biotechnology has established itself as a primary platform for the application of CE to the analysis of proteins and peptides, Chapters 5–7 demonstrate a variety of examples of the specific techniques that have been applied for the development of biopharmaceuticals and their commercialization. The methods covered here include also the analysis of oligosaccharides from glycoproteins.

Book Nonlinear and Stochastic Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Nonlinear and Stochastic Climate Dynamics written by Christian L. E. Franzke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now widely recognized that the climate system is governed by nonlinear, multi-scale processes, whereby memory effects and stochastic forcing by fast processes, such as weather and convective systems, can induce regime behavior. Motivated by present difficulties in understanding the climate system and to aid the improvement of numerical weather and climate models, this book gathers contributions from mathematics, physics and climate science to highlight the latest developments and current research questions in nonlinear and stochastic climate dynamics. Leading researchers discuss some of the most challenging and exciting areas of research in the mathematical geosciences, such as the theory of tipping points and of extreme events including spatial extremes, climate networks, data assimilation and dynamical systems. This book provides graduate students and researchers with a broad overview of the physical climate system and introduces powerful data analysis and modeling methods for climate scientists and applied mathematicians.

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
