This book provides an overview of the various entities within the state that make up what is commonly called "the criminal justice system." This text will serve as a guide for those individuals interested in the various components that make up the Missouri criminal and juvenile justice systems. It addresses various issues and reviews numerous processes and procedures involved in the Missouri justice system. The discussions in this book include information about every step of the justice process: crime in Missouri; police and law enforcement in Missouri; the courts of Missouri; the process of defense and prosecution in Missouri; the emergence of problem-solving courts in Missouri; corrections in Missouri-- both community-based and institutional; reentry back into the community; restorative justice models in Missouri; and the juvenile justice systems of Missouri--both the local juvenile courts and the state system of juvenile corrections, the Missouri Division of Youth Services. Missouri has many programs that are considered model programs in the nation, and their descriptions are proudly presented in this book. Overall, this book provides, in detail, all aspects of the Missouri criminal justice system and is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning how one state's system of criminal justice works.

Book Handbook on Moving Corrections and Sentencing Forward

Download or read book Handbook on Moving Corrections and Sentencing Forward written by Pamela K. Lattimore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses major issues and research in corrections and sentencing with the goal of using previous research and findings as a platform for recommendations about future research, evaluation, and policy. The last several decades witnessed major policy changes in sentencing and corrections in the United States, as well as considerable research to identify the most effective strategies for addressing criminal behavior. These efforts included changes in sentencing that eliminated parole and imposed draconian sentences for violent and drug crimes. The federal government, followed by most states, implemented sentencing guidelines that greatly reduced the discretion of the courts to impose sentences. The results were a multifold increase in the numbers of individuals in jails and prisons and on community supervision—increases that have only recently crested. There were also efforts to engage prosecutors and the courts in diversion and oversight, including the development of prosecutorial diversion programs, as well as a variety of specialty courts. Penal reform has included efforts to understand the transitions from prison to the community, including federal-led efforts focused on reentry programming. Community corrections reforms have ranged from increased surveillance through drug testing, electronic monitoring, and in some cases, judicial oversight, to rehabilitative efforts driven by risk and needs assessment. More recently, the focus has included pretrial reform to reduce the number of people held in jail pending trial, efforts that have brought attention to the use of bail and its disproportionate impact on people of color and the poor. This collection of chapters from leading researchers addresses a wide array of the latest research in the field. A unique approach featuring responses to the original essays by active researchers spurs discussion and provides a foundation for developing directions for future research and policymaking.

Book Routledge Handbook on Victims Issues in Criminal Justice

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Victims Issues in Criminal Justice written by Cliff Roberson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook on Victims’ Issues in Criminal Justice is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook on current issues, with a distinctive emphasis on the delivery of suitable and effective services. The editor provides an introduction and conclusion to the handbook, synthesizing original contributions from current leaders in the field, surveying victims’ rights in the United States, victim participation in the criminal justice system, victims’ welfare and needs, and most notably the services that have been developed in response. A section on special populations in the United States brings focus to current and emerging issues faced within the country, while a section covering international and transnational victimization explores globalization and the implications of other legal traditions and systems. This handbook addresses the crucial and complex topic of victims’ issues, examining both societal and governmental reactions to victims’ concerns and acquainting readers with the issues that discord may cause, and how they affect the provision of services. This book will serve as an essential reference for academics and practitioners working with crime victims, as well as for students taking courses in victimology, criminology, sociology, and related subjects.
