Book The Missionary Review of the World Vol 21

Download or read book The Missionary Review of the World Vol 21 written by Arthur T. Pierson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 1006 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary Review of the World, Vol. 21: January to December, 1898 The pivot of piety is prayer. A pivdt is of double use: it acts as a fastener and as a center; it holds in place, and it is the axis of revolution. Prayer is the double secret: it keeps us steadfast in faith, and it helps to all holy activity. Hence, as surely as God is lifting His people in these latter times to a higher level of life, and moving them to a more unselfish and self-denying service, there will be a new emphasis laid upon supplication, and especially upon intercession. This revival of the praying-spirit, if not first in order of develop ment, is first in order of importance in every really onward advance. Generally, if not uniformly, prayer is both starting point and goal to every movement in which are the elements of permanent progress. Whenever the church is aroused and the world's wickedness arrested, somebody has been praying. If the secret history of all really spiritual advance could be written and read, there would be found some intercessors who, like Job, Samuel, Daniel, Elijah, like Paul and James, like Jonathan Edwards, William Carey, George Muller and Hudson Taylor, have been led to shut themselves in the secret place with God, and have labored fervently in prayers. And, as the starting point is thus found in supplication and intercession, so the final outcome must be that God's people shall have learned to pray, if there is not to be rapid reaction and disastrous relapse from the better conditions secured. Download or read book The American Missionary Vol 40 written by American Missionary Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Missionary, Vol. 40: January, 1886 The region was so destitute, the property so valuable and the promised support so liberal, that our Executive Committee accepted the gift. Rev. J. H. Parr, of Chicago, who had been in our work the previous year, in Austin, Texas, was appointed principal, and three of our tried and efficient lady teachers were selected as his assistants. Rev. Mr. Parr went to Quitman, in August, to take the first steps in getting ready. A committee of citizens met him with the information that, owing to the location of the hotel in the very heart of the town, the feeling of the people was such that its use as a school had better not be under taken. There is a cotton factory in the suburbs of the town which for some time has been idle, located where there would be no objection to a colored school, and these gentlemen proposed to purchase it and offer it with twelve acres of land in exchange for the hotel. Accepting the judg ment of that committee that the exchange would be equitable, and only desiring to do what was best and wisest, with Mrs. Allen's full consent, we accepted the proposition and requested the committee to have the ex change made as quickly as possible, so that we could at once set about getting ready for Opening the school. Pending the negotiations, some other parties purchased the factory and so the scheme fell through. We were assured by prominent citizens that we had done everything that we could be reasonably or honorably expected to do, and that the citizens of Quit man could never make just complaint against the American Missionary Association. With such an assurance there was nothing left for us but to go forward. Mr. Parr, with this strong backing, took hold earnestly. Nevertheless he found himself subjected to insults and petty annoyances. He received anonymous and threatening letters. He was warned to de sist. The gates were carried away. Bullets were fired at his window one night when he was about to retire. The Mayor offered a reward for the apprehension and conviction of the criminals who had stolen the gates and fired the shots. Then the parties who had purchased the factory came forward and informed us that if we would give them the hotel and additional they would make the exchange. Subsequently another propo sition to give us ten acres of land and in exchange was received. This was far below the value of our property, and the location of the land was objectionable, lying between a cemetery and a swamp. These propo sitions, even if equitable, on account of the heavy debt upon our treasury we could not accept. We generally distinguish the Lois as "Wild Lois" and "Tame Lois." The Wild Lois, who inhabit the mountainous interior of the island, live a wild life, and are still in tribal relations. Tribe differs from tribe in dialect, in the pattern tattooed on the women, and, when they come up to market, in the style of coat and skirt they wear. The men, except for different modes of doing up their hair, behold each other on their native heath, differing only as God made them to differ. Without doubt, the Wild Lois, even within thirty miles of Nodoa, belong to several TEACHERS AND SCHOLARS AT THE PRE8BYTERIAN MISSION IN NODOA, HAINAN, CHINA. Those seated la the middle row are a preacher, two teachers, and students. different tribes, but from lack of certain knowledge on that point we will class them all together (language number 5). The region inhabited by the Tame Lois lies to the north of tho mountains and between them and the sea. Like the Chinese, they live in villages, cultivate the land, have prosperous market towns, and schools with scholars that have taken degrees in the prefectural and provincial examinations. The Tame Lois are known as Dam-ciu Lois, Lim-ko Lois, and King-toa Lois, so-called from the names of the thirteen districts on Hainan. The Dam-cius (language number 6) and Limkos (language number 7) make up a large part of the population about Nodoa, the former to the northwest, and the latter to the northoust.
