Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin OShea was born in Dublin in one of the less salubrious parts of that beautiful city. He would tell you he was raised on the wrong side of the tracks by loving, but totally incompetent parents. They just could not cope with looking after themselves, let alone the five children, of whom Martin was the eldest. Their house was a two up and two down on a housing estate where just about everybody was in the same boat. They were all skint. Furthermore they saw no prospects of ever becoming otherwise. The Irish lottery was their hoped-for fairy godmother but she seldom came up with the goods. His dad knew all the neighbours on first-name terms and indeed managed to join many of them regularly in the local pub, there to consume copious amounts of Liffey water from the Guinness factory. It was best not to ask where the money came from. Martins mother was one of those little women that you would pass in the street and never actually notice. Indeed you would be anxious not to notice her because she was able to talk the hind legs of a donkey without really saying anything. A sweet soul, but far out and without a constructive thought in her head. Thus it was that Martin, whilst still in his late teens, decided that to avoid the sterile condition of his family he must do the traditional Irish thing and seek his fortune elsewhere. He didnt fancy joining the thousands of former countrymen in America, preferring to be a bit nearer home should he feel the need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many film fans consider Humphrey Bogart the ultimate star of Hollywood’s golden era. He rose from supporting roles in the early 1930s to become a superstar by the end of the decade. Bogart appeared in more classic films than just about any other actor in American cinema. In addition to The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Big Sleep, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, and The African Queen, Bogart starred in dozens of other highly regarded films until his death in 1956. In The Essential Humphrey Bogart, Constantine Santas looks at the most important films of this Hollywood legend’s career. Along with the established classics, this book discusses other films that showcase Bogart’s superb acting talents, such as High Sierra, To Have and Have Not, Key Largo, In a Lonely Place, Beat the Devil, The Caine Mutiny, Sabrina, and The Desperate Hours. Presented in chronological order, these films chart the actor’s ascent from stereotypical roles as gangsters in The Petrified Forest and Dead End to iconic roles like that of Sam Spade, Rick Blaine, and Philip Marlowe. In all of these performances Bogart showed his versatility, playing a variety of characters from tough detectives and war heroes to a lawyer, writer, gold prospector, river rat, and even a priest. Containing a brief biographical sketch of the actor, this volume then looks at each of Bogart’s most significant films. Each entry states why the particular movie was included and is followed by a plot analysis, critical views from film historians, and DVD/Blu-ray availability. A key to the ranking system helps the reader select what film to view at his or her leisure. Highlighting more than thirty-five films, The Essential Humphrey Bogart is a must-have companion for every fan of this actor’s work and will no doubt introduce viewers to other films to put on their must-see list.

Ireland prepared him for the life he chose to lead. He encountered religious discrimination and the penal-law mentality and he witnessed the Great Famine. Influenced by the accomplishments of Daniel O'Connell, he began to develop his skills as an orator for which he was to gain a world-wide reputation.

Download or read book Saints Clergy and Other Religious Figures on Film and Television 1895 2003 written by Ann C. Paietta and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The portrayal of clergy, saints, missionaries, monks, and other spiritual leaders dates back to the very beginnings of motion pictures and television. Over the years, filmmakers have portrayed religious figures as heroes and villains, sinners and saints, and nearly everything in between. Through their works, filmmakers have influenced how society viewed these religious figures and, by extension, religion itself. This work details over 900 films and television series made from the 1890s through 2003 in which a religious figure plays a prominent or recurring role, or in which a character poses as a religious figure. For each motion picture, full filmographic data are provided--including title, studio, running time, year of release, director, producer, writer, and cast--along with a synopsis focusing on the role of the religious figure. Television series are covered in a separate section. For each show, the entry includes the title under which the show was commonly known; the original broadcast network; the years the show ran, running time, and cast; and a brief discussion of the religious character's role in the overall series. Extensively indexed.
