Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you spiritually thirsty? Perhaps you have been a Christian for a long time. You attend a respectable assembly or fellowship, you study the Bible and you regularly hear good ministry. You have escaped nearly two decades of increasingly deceptive spiritual movements, from the so-called Toronto ‘blessing’ to the ‘Purpose Driven’ and ‘Emergent’ Church, to name but a few. Yet still you sense that there must be more to Christianity. More than ‘ticking boxes’ for orthodox doctrine, more than preaching the Gospel to ourselves when, once again, the Lord has not seen fit to send in any of the unsaved to hear our noble efforts. Have you ever read the book of Acts and been thrilled by the sheer spiritual dynamism of those early believers? Have you wondered why there seems to be such a wide difference between their achievements and ours? Have we forgotten that we serve the same God, who "changes not"? Perhaps you have heard others talk about the Baptism with the Holy Spirit and wondered what it is all about. Sadly, for many whose hearts have been stirred, the stagnant waters of traditionalized teaching have quickly extinguished their yearnings. One of the 20th century's most gifted Bible teachers once said, "We don't need Pentecostal doctrine and we don't need Brethren doctrine, what we need is Bible doctrine!" How true. "The Missing Baptism" is an attempt to help believers examine the Scriptures afresh on this vital matter. It invites you to lay aside the distorting spectacles of denominational prejudice, unbelief, fear, and pride and take the Scriptures at face value.

Book The Lost Mystery of Baptism

Download or read book The Lost Mystery of Baptism written by Daniel Keeran and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2009 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Library of Congress Control Number: 2009902959Bibliographical references and index. Where were the 3,000 people baptized on the day of Pentecost when the church first began?Where is the oldest known baptistery dating from the first century AD?What is that large oval hole in the floor of St. Peters basilica beneath the baptismal font? Why are the early baptismal basins so large? The original practice and meaning of baptism as the central experience of personal conversion to Jesus Christ, has become a lost mystery to the vast majority of people in the world. From the early centuries of the common era until the 13th century, changes occurred that would leave baptism almost unrecognizable to its first participants. This groundbreaking volume containing much new information, combines a look at baptism from two perspectives: the biblical teaching followed by the physical evidence of the places of baptism in the ancient and medieval world. Descriptions of baptismal basins are given for the period extending from the 1st to the 15th centuries in Europe, the Mediterranean region and mostly Italy. Included wherever possible are the dimensions of baptismal basins, the centuries constructed or in use, the presence of inscriptions, and locations of buildings housing the basins.

Book Ablution Initiation and Baptism

Download or read book Ablution Initiation and Baptism written by David Hellholm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.

Book excerpt: Michael Green offers biblical and ecumenical answers to disputed questions about baptism. The gateway into the church. An individual’s testimony to faith and repentance. The reception of the Holy Spirit. The meaning of baptism varies wildly between different Christian traditions. Seeking common ground, Michael Green turns to Scripture to assess the varieties of baptismal theology. Though Green assents that baptism is no substitute for saving faith, he endorses infant baptism, confronting common objections head-on.
