Book excerpt: `It is surely worth reading, not only by the author's fellow psychiatrists, but also by psychologists in general' - Contemporary Psychology `I found this book a joy to read. Each chapter sets out the orthodoxy in question, then proceeds to explain lucidly the author's difficulties with this orthodoxy and to suggest an alternative way of looking at the issues' - Self and Society Psychotherapy's influence seems all pervasive today. But to what end? Is helping people really therapy's main mission? This provocative book explores the alternatives to psychotherapeutic orthodoxies on such vital issues as sexuality; the self; the unconscious; creativity; and the dilemma of evil. Erensto Spinelli challenges psychotherapy, asking if it has retreated from its early promise of being a pivotal agent in our attempts to discover what it means to be human, in exchange for its current role as a pacifier of personal and social unease.

Book excerpt: After escaping the clutches of a Glasgow drug lord nicknamed 'The Widowmaker', the newly promoted Detective Constable Thoroughgood heads for Manchester. The northern powerhouse is home to two rival gangs: 'The Maine Men' and 'The Devils'. When a drug deal goes wrong and Thoroughgood fails to stop it, a full-scale turf war is ready to take over Manchester - a city split into red and blue halves. Seconded into an undercover Greater Manchester Police unit led by the legendary DCI Marty Ferguson, an exiled Glasgow cop with a messianic presence, Thoroughgood soon finds that the drugs war is not the only battle being fought in the city. 'The Hammer' takes Thoroughgood out of the character's typical Scottish stomping grounds, with 1990s Manchester and a nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams forming the perfect backdrop for Mitchell's brand of gritty, high-octane crime writing.

Book excerpt: It is said that a mirror can trap a person's soul... Martin Williams is a broke, two-bit screenwriter living in Hollywood, but when he finds the very mirror that once hung in the house of a murdered 1930s child star, he happily spends all he has on it. He has long obsessed over the tragic story of Boofuls, a beautiful and successful actor who was slaughtered and dismembered by his grandmother. However, he soon discovers that this dream buy is in fact a living nightmare; the mirror was not only in Boofuls house, but witness to the death of this blond-haired and angelic child, which in turn has created a horrific and devastating portal to a hellish parallel universe. So when Martin's landlord loses his grandson it is soon apparent that the mirror is responsible. But if a little boy has gone into the mirror, what on earth is going to come out?

Download or read book The Automotive Body written by L. Morello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Automotive Body” consists of two volumes. The first volume produced the needful cultural background on the body; it described the body and its components in use on most kinds of cars and industrial vehicles: the quantity of drawings that are presented allows the reader to familiarize with the design features and to understand functions, design motivations and fabrication feasibility, in view of the existing production processes. The purpose of this second volume is to explain the links which exist between satisfying the needs of the customer (either driver or passenger) and the specifications for vehicle design, and between the specifications for vehicle system and components. For this study a complete vehicle system must be considered, including, according to the nature of functions that will be discussed, more component classes than considered in Volume I, and, sometimes, also part of the chassis and the powertrain. These two books about the vehicle body may be added to those about the chassis and are part of a series sponsored by ATA (the Italian automotive engineers association) on the subject of automotive engineering; they follow the first book, published in 2005 in Italian only, about automotive transmission. They cover automotive engineering from every aspect and are the result of a five-year collaboration between the Polytechnical University of Turin and the University of Naples on automotive engineering.

Book excerpt: I dream the future. Immediately after she blurted it out, she was embarrassed. It sounded stupid, she was convinced. She felt her face flush and her eyes fill with tears. Ms. Rodgers would probably think she was crazy, or making it up, or both. She quickly amended her statement. Well, I think I dream the future. Sometimes I have dreams and they come true later. Its happened a lot and is happening more and more. But, no one really knows except my family who doesnt believe me. The string of words just kept tumbling from her mouth. Sherry could not figure out how she and Jasmine got off on the wrong foot. She believed it all started on the bus ride to school. After staring Sherry down for weeks, Sherry had finally had enough. What is your FREAKING problem? Sherry shouted across the bus aisle. You! Jasmine countered. Apparently that was all that needed to be said to create the rift that would ultimately push Sherry to her limit. Trying to be cool, Sherry stood at the top of the slide and attempted to run down it. She made it to the bottom, but her old sneakers had no tread and her right foot slipped from underneath her. She went flying into the air. Time stood still for a moment as she was airborne. Hoping her head wouldnt hit the metal slide; she looked at all the stars and knew she had made a huge mistake when she allowed Kara to come over. Her life flashed in front of her. God please help me she thought just before she landed. Her butt hit the ground and the base of her skull hit the edge of the slide. Sherry lay there for what seemed like an eternity, listening to the two stoners laugh. They thought she was playing. Help me, whimpered Sherry. She stared at the stars and wasnt quite sure what hurt, or if she could feel anything at all. Vincent came into her line of sight and kneeled down next to her.
