But the supernatural repels just as soon as it obtrudes itself in per ceptible events and in a measure unveils the secret. The religious man sees himself in the struggle of these two tendencies of his being; he reaches after the supernatural and would snatch it, so imperfect does he feel himself and his world to be without it; but when he sees it he is tossed to and fro by doubts whether it is, indeed, the super natural or merely a delusion. I have not been able to find time to modify, enlarge, or improve them. This fact will partially explain repetitions Of thought or even phrase almost inevi table in papers written from time to time for the purposes of a monthly periodical. Other only too obvious faults are the results of the hurry and distractions from which the vicar of a parish of nearly fifty thousand people must necessarily suffer. I have not, directly, consulted any other literature than the Gospels themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For a man is not required to believe in them save as believing in Jesus. If a man can believe that there is a God, he may well believe that, having made creatures capable of hungering and thirsting for him, he must be capable of speaking a word to guide them in their feeling after him. And if he is a grand God, a God worthy of being God, yea (his metaphysics even mav Show the seeker), if he is a God capable Of being God, he will speak the clearest grandest word Of guidance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Miracles: In Their Relation to Christ and Christianity Acts ii.22: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders; signs, which God did by him, in the midst of you. In entering on the subject which is to occupy our attention throughout these lectures, it is needful that we should have a clear idea of the place which an inquiry into the credibility and evidential value of miracles has in the investigation of the nature and origin of Christianity. These are not the first topics that challenge consideration in the examination of the Scriptures; nor are they dependent for their right adjustment on our acceptance of the doctrine that the Evangelists and Apostles were divinely inspired. It is often alleged, however, that the defenders of the faith are guilty of disingenuousness, inasmuch as, at one time, they use the inspiration and authority of Scripture for the purpose of proving the reality of the miracles; while at another, they employ the reality of the miracles for the purpose of establishing the inspired authority of the Scriptures. Book Miracles in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miracles in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by J. M. Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles in the New Testament The main part of this book consists of a critical examina tion of the miracle-stories of the New Testament, leading to the hypothesis that the original events underlying those traditions need not be regarded as miraculous. This is prefaced by an attempt to define the belief in miracles, and followed by an estimate of some of the theological results of its rejection. It must not be thought that, because the constructive part of the book (pp. 211-218) is so short, it is nu important. It was inevitable, from the nature of the case, that the detailed criticism of the miracle-stories should form the bulk of the argument. But criticism is throughout regarded as subordinate to construction. There would be little point in discussing the problem of miracles except as a step towards a formulation of Christian theology. The last few pages of the conclusion are meant to focus the whole argument upon what really matters - our belief about God and Christ. They should, perhaps, be read first, as well as last, if the book is to be fairly judged as a whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Jesus Truly enough describes the attitude of many a loyal Christian when he says that he [the Christian] accepts the narratives of miracles and of the miraculous as they stand, but with a note of interrogation. 1 Others frankly reject them altogether. A chief difficulty in dealing with this widely-spread tendency is that it is, in most cases, less the result of reasoning than, as just said, a temper, due to what Mr. Balfour would call a psychological climate, 2 or Lecky would describe as the general intellectual condition of the time.3 Still, it is only by fair reasoning, and the adducing of considerations which set things in a different light, that it can be legitimately met apart, that is, from a change in the climate itself, a thing continually happening. When this is done, it is remarkable how little, in the end, it is able to say in justification of its sweeping assumptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miracles: Helps to Faith, Not Hindrances Think that there is danger to the interests of truth and godliness in such a low estimate of the value of the supernatural. For if we View the mission of Christ as a whole, what is it but one stupendous miracle? What is the incarnation if it be not a miracle? What is the great redemptive scheme but an interference or intervention of Divine agency to produce an effect otherwise impossible? And is not that the very essence of miracle? If, therefore, we let go or fail to appreciate those miracles, which, lying in the sphere of human observation, were given as the external signs of the reality of that great spiritual miracle which cannot be so directly tested, who does not see that by and by we shall be in danger of letting go this last also? If we reject miracle in the material department, are we not on the high way that leads to the rejection of it in the spiritual, and so to the reduction of the gospel to a mere system of naturalism, one among the rest of the religions of the world, - better than most indeed, but still only Of men?
