This book was released on 1998-03-17 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Eocene (45 Ma) flora from Thunder Mountain caldera shows that montane conifer forest species from upper slopes descended to interfinger with mixed conifer-deciduous hardwood forest on the caldera floor then near 1700 m. Most species are allied to those in the western United States, but a few genera are in China. Precipitation was near 100 cm yearly, with most in summer.

Download or read book The Oligocene Haynes Creek Flora of Eastern Idaho written by Daniel I. Axelrod and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This flora of 70 species is dominated by deciduous trees, many with descendants in China. Precipitation was 890 mm, mean annual temperature 12.5°C, the annual range 10°C, and freezing rare. Elevation was about 1000 meters. Comparison with the Horse Prairie flora, 30 miles east and across the present continental divide, indicates that the divide was then low and discontinuous, with warmer climate to the east.

Download or read book The Miocene Purple Mountain Flora of Western Nevada written by Daniel I. Axelrod and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, nine florules from the Chloropagus Formation near Fernley, Nevada, are dated at 14.7-13.4 million years. The author finds that dominant mixed conifer forest and sclerophyll woodland species of the Sierra Nevada-Klamath region replaced exotic deciduous hardwoods in the two lowest sites. He concludes that this change reflects the loss of adequate summer rain as upwelling from a colder ocean resulted from spreading East Antarctic ice.

Download or read book A Natural History of the New World written by Alan Graham and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paleoecological history of the Americas is as complex as the region is broad: stretching from the Arctic Circle to Tierra del Fuego, the New World features some of the most extraordinary vegetation on the planet. But until now it has lacked a complete natural history. Alan Graham remedies that with A Natural History of the New World. With plants as his scientific muse, Graham traces the evolution of ecosystems, beginning in the Late Cretaceous period (about 100 million years ago) and ending in the present, charting their responses to changes in geology and climate. By highlighting plant communities’ roles in the environmental history of the Americas, Graham offers an overdue balance to natural histories that focus exclusively on animals. Plants are important in evolution’s splendid drama. Not only are they conspicuous and conveniently stationary components of the Earth’s ecosystems, but their extensive fossil record allows for a thorough reconstruction of the planet’s paleoenvironments. What’s more, plants provide oxygen, function as food and fuel, and provide habitat and shelter; in short, theirs is a history that can speak to many other areas of evolution. A Natural History of the New World is an ambitious and unprecedented synthesis written by one of the world’s leading scholars of botany and geology.

Download or read book Terrestrial Vegetation of California 3rd Edition written by Michael Barbour and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-07-17 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This completely new edition of Terrestrial Vegetation of California clearly documents the extraordinary complexity and richness of the plant communities and of the state and the forces that shape them. This volume is a storehouse of information of value to anyone concerned with meeting the challenge of understanding, managing or conserving these unique plant communities under the growing threats of climate change, biological invasions and development."—Harold Mooney, Professor of Environmental Biology, Stanford University "The plants of California are under threat like never before. Traditional pressures of development and invasive species have been joined by a newly-recognized threat: human-caused climate change. It is essential that we thoroughly understand current plant community dynamics in order to have a hope of conserving them. This book represents an important, well-timed advance in knowledge of the vegetation of this diverse state and is an essential resource for professionals, students, and the general public alike."—Brent Mishler, Director of the University & Jepson Herbaria and Professor of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley
