This general subject will then be continued in the messages of the spring 2022 term and will focus on Romans 7 and 8. The life and death form two contrasting lines in chapters 5 through 8, showing that man is at the center of a triangular situation between God and Satan, that is, between life and death. The tree of life and the tree of knowledge (the tree of death) issue in two lines--the line of life and the line of death--that run through the entire Bible and consummate in the book of Revelation. The line of life begins with the tree of life in Genesis 2 and issues in the New Jerusalem in Revelation 22 as the city of the water of life with the tree of life, the light of life, and the glory of life. Similarly, the line of death begins with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 2 and ends with the lake of fire in Revelation 20. The kernel of the Bible is that Christ has been revealed into us as life and that we live, have our being, and exist by Christ as the divine life. God put us into Christ with the desire that we would be transformed and conformed to the image of His Son so that we might be thoroughly one with Christ. In this way we are built up together as the living Body of Christ to contain and express Christ for the Father's glory and for our glorification in Christ. Romans 5 reveals that the result of our justification is the full enjoyment of God in Christ as our life.

Book excerpt: In this issue of The Ministry, we continue Brother Lee’s fellowship with the elders and co-workers in Taipei concerning the present practice for the carrying out of God’s economy. In this message Brother Lee points out that as soon as we contact someone, we should bring the meetings to his home. In the Lord’s recovery, this practice should be the fundamental factor in building up the church. We must also use the Lord’s word to teach one another in the home meetings. To this end, the serving ones in the meetings must carefully select the proper material for the home meetings. This is an absolute necessity and is in the principle of giving the household food at the proper time (Matt. 24:45). Then the serving ones should make it their job not to expound the reading materials but to direct everyone to focus on the main points. The key to the success of the new way is the spiritual material we use in the home meetings and the way we teach the Truth Lessons. The following three messages are the conclusion of the Thanksgiving Conference held in Anaheim in November 1998 concerning the principles of the Body. Message Four presents four more principles of the Body, including knowing the authority of Christ the Head, genuine spirituality being a matter of the Body, caring for the feeling and peace of the Body, and having the consciousness of the Body. Message Five stresses the crucial fact that the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ is poured out upon the Body. Hence, to experience and enjoy such a reality today, we must be in the Body and for the Body. Message Six gives a number of practical applications concerning the principles of the Body presented in the foregoing messages in this series. This message emphasizes the principles of the home meetings, which are that everyone speaks, no one assumes the headship, and every home has a meeting. The Lord’s leading among all the churches in His recovery today is that we rid ourselves of the way of organization, control, arrangement, and fund-raising. We must care only for three precious things—the Lord’s life, His Spirit, and His word—in the home meetings. The home meetings are the foundation of the church. The co-workers, elders, and serving saints must see this burden and respond with a change of concept and with much and adequate prayer. In addition, they must be apt to teach the truth in a living and fresh way and bring the saints into the truth. The three messages that follow are from the Thanksgiving Conference held in Anaheim in November 1998 concerning the principles of the Body. The first message stresses the vision of the Body of Christ. To see the Body of Christ is to enter into the reality of the Body of Christ. We need revelation to know the reality of the Body of Christ and to usher us into the realm of the Body, and only then will the Body of Christ become our experience. The second message presents the following three principles of the Body: the Body is one, the Body is altogether a matter of life, and the Body is Christ. The third message gives another five principles concerning the Body of Christ: the function of the Body is to express Christ, the reality of the Body is a group of God’s redeemed who have been made God in life and nature but not in the Godhead, the Body is in the resurrection life of Christ, the Body is a new creation, and the Body is the consummation of the work of the cross. Lastly, we include two reports. The first is a report from the former Soviet Union concerning the elders’ and co-workers’ training and the semi-annual two-week training; the second is an update concerning the use of the facilities on the campus for the ministry in Anaheim, California.

The general subject of this series of messages is "The Development of the Kingdom of God in the Christian Life and the Church Life." The kingdom of God is a wonderful person--the Lord Jesus Christ, who as the Sower sowed the seed of the kingdom into the soil of our heart. This kingdom seed, which is Christ Himself as both the King and the kingdom through the word, needs to grow and develop in our inner being to become God's ruling realm. The kingdom is the realm of life for the divine life to move, rule, and govern so that life may accomplish its purpose. The kingdom that is developing is not only divine life but also Christ Himself as a wonderful person expanding within us. Before there can be the manifestation of the kingdom with the Lord's coming, there must be the reality of the kingdom inwardly and the practicality of the kingdom in the Christian life and the church life. In our Christian life, we live the kingdom life by living a hidden life. Because the kingdom has been sown as a seed into us, the development and manifestation of the kingdom must come from the hidden growth of the roots within the soil. The kingdom life is a life in the depths, a life that can "take root downward and bear fruit upward" (Isa. 37:31). The principle of the kingdom people is that they live a hidden life, not performing their righteous deeds before men. Messages 1 and 2 emphasize the Christian life, particularly the inward reality of the kingdom that is developing and the matter of learning to have a life hidden in God so that the kingdom life may deepen in us. The kingdom is the reality of the church, and the church is the practical expression and representation of the kingdom. Apart from the kingdom life, we cannot live the church life. The genuine church is the kingdom of God in this age. Today the believers live the kingdom life in the church. Messages 3 through 6 focus on various aspects of the kingdom and the church. Message 3 directly concerns the kingdom and the church. Message 4 is on relationships in the kingdom. In particular, it is on the seriousness of living a forgiving life so that we will have no issues before the Son of Man that will cost us the kingdom reward. In Message 5 we see the need for shutting up the gates of Hades through the exercise of the keys of denying the self, taking up the cross, and losing the soul-life. Message 6 focuses on the responsibility of the church to engage in spiritual warfare, mainly through prayer, because of the conf lict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. The responsibility of the church is to bring the kingdom of God to the earth in glorious manifestation. Message 7 is concerned with our being watchful in life and faithful in service. For life, we need oil, the Spirit of God, even His filling, that we may be enabled to live the virgin life for the Lord's testimony. For service, for work, we need the talent, the spiritual gift, that we may be equipped as a good slave to accomplish what the Lord intends to accomplish. Message 8 concludes this series by releasing a burden on proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom throughout the entire inhabited earth and discipling the nations. The gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole inhabited earth for a testimony to all the nations before the end of this age. We have the authority, commission, and position of our resurrected Christ to disciple the nations for the spread and development of the kingdom of God. The eight messages of the April 2022 issue draw from Witness Lee's understanding of Romans 5 and 6 in his earlier ministry. The eight messages of this issue present a further understanding of Romans 5 and 6 based on the latter part of his ministry, in which Brother Lee emphasized the matters of being saved in life and reigning in life (5:10, 17). In life indicates that both being saved and reigning are related to the organic aspect of God's complete salvation, which is the fulfillment of God's salvation through the life of Christ for the believers to be transformed and to grow and mature in the life of God. Brother Lee thus began to speak about God's salvation in life in a brand new way, especially in view of the great diamond of God's eternal economy. In his earlier ministry Brother Lee spoke about our being saved in life from particular items, such as worldliness, Satan, sin, and death. In the latter part of his ministry, he saw that organic salvation is our deification, a process that includes regeneration, feeding, sanctification, renewing, transformation, building, conformation, and glorification and that results in our becoming God in life and nature but not in the Godhead. The goal of organic salvation is the building--the corporate expression of the Triune God in Christ through the church, the mingling of God with man, and the enlargement and expansion of God. The secret of all the experiences of God's organic salvation and the building of God is the Spirit with our spirit, that is, the consummated Spirit being and working together with the believers' created and regenerated spirit. Romans further reveals that the believers need to reign in life over all things for the Body life (cf. 8:17, 29; 12:5). By experiencing grace upon grace, the believers reign in life not only over sin, death, and Satan but even over all things. To reign in life is to conquer, subdue, and rule over Satan, the world, sin, the flesh, ourselves, and all the environmental circumstances and to subdue all kinds of insubordination. The issue of our reigning in life, living under the ruling of the divine life, is the real and practical Body life expressed in the church life (16:1, 4-5, 16). The sixteen messages in this term emphasize Romans 7 and especially chapter 8. The general subject of this series of messages is derived from footnote 1 on Romans 5:14, which says that chapters 5 through 8 of Romans "can be called the kernel of the Bible." The footnote also points out that life and death form two contrasting lines through these chapters and that man is in the middle between the line of life, which represents God, and the line of death, which represents Satan. Life and death are the intrinsic essence of the kernel of the Bible. In Romans 7 and 8 we see that Paul discovered four laws--four spontaneous, automatic, effortless, and unconscious universal principles, or functions. In particular, there are three lives and four laws revealed in these chapters. The first law, the law of God, is the moral and objective law. The second law is the law of good in man's soul, especially the mind, which corresponds to the created human life and which desires to carry out the law of God. The third law is the law of sin and of death, which derives from the evil satanic life in our flesh; this law is stronger than the law of good within and thus seizes man's desire to do good and turns it into an opportunity to sin. The fourth law is the law of the Spirit of life, which is higher than and overcomes the law of sin and of death; this law derives from the uncreated divine life that is now in our regenerated human spirit. We need to see these three lives and four laws in order to experience the indwelling Christ as the law of the Spirit of life. We also need to see what the flesh is. The flesh denotes the totality of the fallen old man, our entire fallen being; man is totally flesh because the fallen being today is under the dominion of the fallen flesh. The flesh is enmity against God, the flesh is not subject to God's law, the flesh is not able to subject itself to the law of God, and the flesh can never please God. Every aspect of our flesh, whether good or evil, is an enemy of God's authority. Whatever is of the flesh is against God's throne; it will be used by Satan, the subtle one, the enemy of God, to hinder God's purpose. The flesh is the "meeting hall" and the compound of sin, death, and Satan; the flesh is a hopeless case and can never be improved. However, in His wisdom and sovereignty God uses our flesh as a compelling force that causes us to turn to our spirit. We are either in the spirit or in the flesh; there is no third place for us to be. The believer is a miniature garden of Eden--with God as the tree of life in his spirit, Satan as the tree of knowledge in his flesh, and his mind in between. In Romans 8 the mind is neutral, being between the regenerated, mingled spirit and the fallen body, the flesh. Setting the mind on the spirit is the key to death or life. Because both Satan and God are in us, our mind has become a battlefield between God and Satan. Whether we are one with Satan or one with God depends upon where we set our mind. In order to fight the battle against the enemy, we must know that the mind is the battlefield and that the way to protect and cover our mind is to turn it to the Lord all the time. The Bible requires only one thing of us--that we walk according to the mingled spirit, which is to live, move, act, behave, have our being, and do everything in the mingled spirit. While we remain in the touch with the Lord, staying in contact with Him in our spirit, the law of the Spirit of life works automatically, spontaneously, and effortlessly within us. By the working, the spreading, of the law of the Spirit of life within us, God makes us the same as He is in life, nature, and expression. We are conformed to the image of the firstborn Son of God by the working of the law of the Spirit of life. The general subject of the blending conference is "The Vision, Ministry, and Ministers of the Age." In every age there is a particular vision given by God, a specific ministry of that age, and a minister or ministers used by God to fulfill their commission to bear, release, and trumpet the ministry of that age. In every age God gives a particular vision that guards, controls, and governs His people so that they may serve Him according to the vision of that age. The governing vision of the Bible is the Triune God working Himself into His chosen and redeemed people in order to saturate their entire being with the Divine Trinity for the producing and building up of the Body of Christ consummating in the New Jerusalem. The vision that the Lord has given to His recovery is an all-inclusive vision--the all-inheriting vision of the age. Our vision extends all the way from Adam's vision of the tree of life in the garden of Eden to the New Jerusalem with the tree of life. The ministry of this age builds up the Body of Christ, which is to build up the New Jerusalem; prepares the bride of Christ, which is to prepare the New Jerusalem because the New Jerusalem is the bride of Christ; and brings in the kingdom of God, the ultimate manifestation and consummation of which is the New Jerusalem. Therefore, the ministry of this age fulfills the direction of the Lord's move today. The ministry of the age ministers the present truth to God's people. The present truth, the highest peak of the divine revelation given to us by God through the ministry of this age, is the revelation of the eternal economy of God. God becoming man so that man might become God in life and in nature but not in the Godhead is the essence of the entire Bible, the "diamond" in the "box" of the Bible, the eternal economy of God. God and man will become one entity, and that one entity is the mingling of divinity with humanity, which will consummate in the New Jerusalem, the conclusion of the entire Bible. The ministers of the age are those who have the vision of the age and the ministry of the age and know what God is speaking and doing in the present age. The ministers of the age are patterns to the believers so that they may be perfected to do the work of the ministry for the building up of the Body of Christ. The ministers of the age have four characteristics: First, they are men who allow their natural ability to be terminated by the cross so that all their ability is in resurrection. Second, they are tree-of-life persons. Third, they know the central work of God. Fourth, they pay more attention to life than to work. The general subject of the special conference is "Special Fellowship concerning the World Situation and the Lord's Move." Messages 4 and 5 of this special conference were spoken in English and therefore are included in this issue.
