Book Dry Cooling Towers for Cooling Plants

Download or read book Dry Cooling Towers for Cooling Plants written by Bruce Robert Andeen and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey of capital costs of dry cooling towers was performed. Heat exchanger surfaces were compared in terms of heat transfer coefficient and friction power per unit heat transfer area. A computer program was developed to design the heat exchanger configuration resulting in the lowest total operating cost per kilowatt-hour for a dry cooling tower. Input data includes fuel costs, cost of lost capacity per kilowatt-hour, maintenance and interest rates, turbine heat rate versus back pressure, boiler costs, and friction and heat transfer coefficients for the heat transfer surface. Studies of periodic exchangers showed that liquid or loose periodic material is impractical. However, rigid periodic surfaces are promising if liquid carryover and subsequent air side evaporation can be reduced, perhaps by using a non-wetting surface. Carryover and evaporation tests of a rigid Teflon-coated periodic surface are underway. If a method to remove large drops from the periodic surface can be perfected, its evaporation rate will be an order of magnitude less than the wet tower's, while the costs of the two should be competitive. A packed bed heat exchanger consists of small balls attached to the outside of tubes carrying hot liquid. The balls act as fins; air blown through the balls cools the liquid. Several methods of joining balls were tested to find the method which minimizes heat transfer resistance from ball to ball. Zinc coated steel balls and epoxy coated aluminum balls have shown promising performance in simple configurations. The first assemblies made with these techniques exhibited considerable blockage of the air passages between the balls.
