Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miners of Northumberland and Durham: A History of Their Social and Political Progress This is a wonderful story, revealing the hard and tragic life of the Miner and his family during the early part of the nineteenth century. It is published just at a time when the men who are the connecting link between that day and this are fast passing away, and therefore it comes at an opportune moment when there is a very grave danger of the Northern Miner, expecially the younger generation, forgetting the past history of our industry, and with it our indebtedness to those noble pioneers who so faithfully, and at great personal sacrifice and privation, fought and toiled so that the greater liberty we now enjoy might be won. Book The Shadow of the Mine

Download or read book The Shadow of the Mine written by Huw Beynon and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday – and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday, the heroics and betrayals of the Miners’ Strike, and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. Coal was central to the British economy, powering its factories and railways. It carried political weight, too. In the eighties the miners risked everything in a year-long strike against Thatcher’s shutdowns. Their defeat doomed a way of life. The lingering sense of abandonment in former mining communities would be difficult to overstate. Yet recent electoral politics has revolved around the coalfield constituencies in Labour’s Red Wall. Huw Beynon and Ray Hudson draw on decades of research to chronicle these momentous changes through the words of the people who lived through them. This edition includes a new postscript on why Thatcher’s war on the miners wasn’t good for green politics. ‘Excellent’ NEW STATESMAN ‘Brilliant’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT ‘Enlightening’ GUARDIAN

Excerpt: ... refers to binding time in the following lines of " The Pitman's Pay" -- "Just like wor maisters when wor bun, If men and lads be verra scant, They wheedle us wi' yel and fun, And coax us into what they want. But myek yor mark, then snuffs and sneers Suin stop yor gob and lay yor braggin; When yence yor feet are i' the geers, Maw soul, they keep yor paunches waggin." CHAPTER IV, THE CO-OPEBATIVE MOVEMENT, AND HEPBURN'S UNION. From the settlement of the strike about the binding time things went on peaceably, and nothing occurred worthy of being recorded till the year 1825, when there was an attempt made to carry out a great social reform. Boys at this time used to be from seventeen to eighteen hours a day in the mine. Allowed to go down at the early, and almost infantile age of six years, the whole of their youthful days were spent in the dismal mine till they became 21 years of age; and, during the whole of this long period, as we have already remarked, they hardly ever saw the happy, health-giving daylight and sunshine, except at short intervals. There were no schools, and no time to attend them had there been so that education amongst miners in those days was out of the question, with the exception of one here and there. Amongst the few, however, there was one bold, honest, intelligent man, named Mackintosh, who was a miner, and felt the degraded state of his fellow-men, and who set about the great social work of co-operation, with a view to the amelioration of himself and his companions. Like Galileo, however, he lived before his time. A commencement was made at Hetton, in the County of Durham, on the co-operative principle, but it soon failed, and it cannot be wondered at, when the prejudice and the ignorance that prevailed at this...

Book Mining and Social Change Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Mining and Social Change Routledge Revivals written by Martin Bulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strong community ties of mining villages are the central concern of this book, which deals with the social history and sociology of mining in County Durham in the twentieth century. Focusing on the country as a whole, this title, first published in 1978, asks what is most distinctive about the area in the past and how it is changing in the present. The personal documents presented in the first chapters of the book bring to life the local mining community with an evocative picture of village life at the turn of the century. These first-hand accounts are integrated with the results of social research carried out at Durham University over a number of years. Mining and Social Change will be of interest to students of history and sociology.
