Book The Life of Charles Thomson

Download or read book The Life of Charles Thomson written by Lewis R Harley and published by Sunbury Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Thomson was the Secretary of the Continental Congress from its founding until the elections following the passage of the US Constitution. Thomson was the second person to sign the Declaration of Independence, attesting to John Hancock's signature. He was also one of the brightest patriots, deeply interested in science and religion. A member of the American Philosophical Society, he was friends with Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, and others. Thomson was the person who traveled to Mount Vernon to inform George Washington he had been elected the first President of the United States. Thomson kept both public and private journals regarding the proceedings of Congress. John Jay and others encouraged him to write his memoir following the American Revolution. Thomson began the process, compiling nearly 1000 pages. He then had a sudden change of course and decided it would be best the world not know the intimate details he had recorded. Instead of publishing his observations of the founding generation in action, he burned everything. He said he desired to avoid "contradicting all the histories of the great events of the Revolution. Let the world admire the supposed wisdom and valor of our great men. Perhaps they may adopt the qualities that have been ascribed to them, and thus good may be done. I shall not undeceive future generations." This newly edited Second Edition includes numerous period illustrations and an index, and a foreword by Lawrence Knorr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is life related to the mind? The question has long confounded philosophers and scientists, and it is this so-called explanatory gap between biological life and consciousness that Evan Thompson explores in Mind in Life. Thompson draws upon sources as diverse as molecular biology, evolutionary theory, artificial life, complex systems theory, neuroscience, psychology, Continental Phenomenology, and analytic philosophy to argue that mind and life are more continuous than has previously been accepted, and that current explanations do not adequately address the myriad facets of the biology and phenomenology of mind. Where there is life, Thompson argues, there is mind: life and mind share common principles of self-organization, and the self-organizing features of mind are an enriched version of the self-organizing features of life. Rather than trying to close the explanatory gap, Thompson marshals philosophical and scientific analyses to bring unprecedented insight to the nature of life and consciousness. This synthesis of phenomenology and biology helps make Mind in Life a vital and long-awaited addition to his landmark volume The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience (coauthored with Eleanor Rosch and Francisco Varela). Endlessly interesting and accessible, Mind in Life is a groundbreaking addition to the fields of the theory of the mind, life science, and phenomenology.

Interest 1n Sc1ence.--Relat1ons W1th H1s "anc1ent Fr1end," Jefferson.--Observat1ons On The Notes On The State Of V1rg1n1a. THROUGHOUT his life, Thomson had an absorbing interest in science. He was elected to membership in the American Philosophical Society on September 22, 1758; was Secretary of the society from 1769 to 1770, and served as one of its councillors from 1781 to 1783. Ewing and Williamson, to wait on Miss Norris, and request the use of the telescope in her possession, on the occasion of the transit of Venus, June 3d, of that year. The society erected an observatory in the State House yard for the purpose of viewing the transit, and Thomson was deeply interested in this event, as is shown by the following account in the "Pennsylvania Gazette," June 8, 1769: "We hear that the Committee appointed by the American Philosophical Society for the Promotion of Useful Knowledge, to observe the transit of Venus, which happened on Saturday last, having distributed themselves into three classes, Rev. Mr. John Ewing, Joseph Shippen, Esq., Dr. Hugh Williamson, Messrs. Thomas Prior, Charles Thomson, and James Pearson, observed at the public observatory in the State House Square; the Rev. Doctor William Smith, John Lukens, Esq., Messrs. David Rittenhouse and John Sellers, at Mr. Rittenhouse's observatory, at Norriton; and Mr. Owen Biddle, at the Light House near the Capes of Delaware. The weather was extremely favorable, and the observations at the three several places were completed greatly to the satisfaction of the observers. As soon as the Committees have...
