Book The Military Orders from the Twelfth to the Early Fourteenth Centuries

Download or read book The Military Orders from the Twelfth to the Early Fourteenth Centuries written by Alan Forey and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over eighty years since the last important comprehensive work on the military orders, including the Templars, was published. Yet the present volume seeks to do more than just summarise recent research on individual sources; based on a wide range of primary sources, it also sets out to answer questions about the military orders which have not been posed before. The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Christendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and gives an account of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from other religious foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their administrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership. Written by a leading authority in this area, The Military Orders is the first generic approach to this subject. Dr. Forey has written a book that will become indispensable reading for the student and general reader alike.

Book The Templars the Hospitallers and the Crusades

Download or read book The Templars the Hospitallers and the Crusades written by Helen J. Nicholson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book pays homage to the work of a scholar who has substantially advanced knowledge and understanding of the medieval military-religious orders. Alan J. Forey has published over seventy meticulously researched articles on every aspect of the military-religious orders, two books on the Templars in the Corona de Aragón, and a wide-ranging survey of the military-religious orders from the twelfth to the early fourteenth centuries. His archival research has been especially significant in opening up the history of the military orders in the Iberian Peninsula. This volume comprises an appreciation of Forey’s work and a range of research that has been inspired by his scholarship or develops themes that run through his work. Articles reflect Forey’s detailed research into and analysis of primary sources, as well as his work on the military orders, the crusades, the eastern Mediterranean, and the trial of the Templars. Further papers move beyond the geographical and chronological bounds of Forey’s research, while still exploring his themes of the military-religious orders’ relations with the Church and State.

Book The Military Orders Volume IV

Download or read book The Military Orders Volume IV written by Judi Upton-Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades there has been an explosion of scholarly interest in the Military Orders. With a history stretching from the early twelfth century to the present day, they were among the richest and most powerful orders of the church in medieval Europe. They founded their own states in Prussia and on the Mediterranean islands of Rhodes and Malta. They are of concern to historians of the Church, art and architecture, government, agriculture, estate management, banking, medicine and warfare, and of the expansion of Europe overseas. The conferences on their history, which have been organized in London every four years, have attracted leading scholars from all over the world. The present volume records the proceedings of the Fourth Conference in 2005 and is essential reading for those interested in the progress of research on these extraordinary institutions. The twenty-seven papers published here represent a selection of those delivered at the conference. Architecture, archaeology and the part which the orders played in Europe are well represented, along with work on northern and eastern Europe. Four papers deal specifically with military or naval matters, while another four deal with the spiritual life of the brothers and sisters. Family relationships represent a growing field of interest. The majority of the papers focus on the Hospitallers, but the volume includes studies on the Templars and the Teutonic Order, as well as the Portuguese military orders.

Their history stretches from the early twelfth century to the present. They were among the richest and most powerful religious corporations in pre-Reformation Europe, and they founded their own states on Rhodes and Malta and also on the Baltic coast. Historians of the Church, of art and architecture, of agriculture and banking, of medicine and warfare and of European expansion can all benefit from investigating the orders and their archives. The conferences on their history that have been organized in London every four years have attracted scholars from all over the world. The present volume records the proceedings of the Fifth Conference in 2009 (held in Cardiff as the London venue was in the process of refurbishment), and, like the earlier volumes in the series, will prove essential for anyone interested in the current state of research into these powerful institutions. The thirty-eight papers published here represent a selection of those delivered at the conference. Three papers deal with the recent archaeological investigations at the Hospitaller castle at al-Marqab (Syria); others examine aspects of the history of the military orders in the Latin East and the Mediterranean lands, in Spain and Portugal, in the British Isles and in northern and eastern Europe. The final two papers address the question of present-day perceptions of the Templars as moulded by the sort of popular literature that most of the other contributors would normally keep at arm's length.

This volume complements the Proceedings of the very successful first conference, The Military Orders: Fighting for the Faith and Caring for the Sick, edited by Malcolm Barber (1994) and now out of print.

Book International Mobility in the Military Orders twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries

Download or read book International Mobility in the Military Orders twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries written by Jochen Burgtorf and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International aspects of the military orders during the Crusades. The military orders, particularly the Templars and Hospitallers, depended upon intense West-East contacts and networks of far-reaching geographical proportions (from Spain to the Holy Land, from Scotland to northern Africa) for the exchange of personnel, goods, and money. The essays of this collection consider general aspects and individual cases; the mobilization of resources for the East; regional studies--mobility and the military orders in the West; and national considerations in the international arena.

Book The Military Orders Volume III

Download or read book The Military Orders Volume III written by Victor #N/A and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years there has been an explosion of scholarly interest in the Military Orders. With a history stretching from the early twelfth century to the present day, they were among the richest and most powerful orders of the church in medieval Europe. They founded their own states in Prussia and on the Mediterranean islands of Rhodes and Malta. The conferences on their history, which have been organized in London every four years, have attracted leading scholars from all over the world. The present volume records the proceedings of the Third Conference in 2000 and is essential reading for those interested in the progress of research on these extraordinary institutions. Of the thirty papers published in this collection, two deal with the orders in general, while eighteen concentrate on the Hospital of St John, six on the Temple, and three on the Teutonic Order, together with another on the Order of the Sword Brothers which it absorbed. The preponderance of works on the Hospitallers is perhaps a particular characteristic of this volume, but the fact that most of the papers relate to provincial life, rather than to the headquarters in the east, Prussia, or Malta, accurately reflects modern concerns, as do the contributions on historiography, the papacy, cultural history, and religious life. Examples of new research interests are the paper on bioarchaeology and the two on liturgy.

Book Military Orders and Crusades

Download or read book Military Orders and Crusades written by Alan Forey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first eight studies in this volume seek to address a series of questions concerning the emergence and the role of the military orders in the 12th and 13th centuries: the reasons for the appearance of the institution, the recruitment and instruction of novices, and, though the military orders were predominantly male organisations, the role of women within them. Dr Forey then turns to the orders’ role in the Crusades, both against the infidel and in ’Holy Wars’ against Christians, and their activities in ransoming captives. The last studies focus on the development of the Order of St John, and on two minor military orders; one of these, that on St Thomas of Acre, draws attention to the relations between England and the Holy Land, the subject also of the final paper, on the crusading plans of Henry III.
