Book The End of Secrecy

Download or read book The End of Secrecy written by Beth M. Kaspar and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study focuses on military competitiveness in the age of transparency, and asserts that the U.S. military must consciously prepare itself to fight in an information transparent world created by globalization. The worldwide explosion in the quantity and quality of information and products available to the general public user, the ready accessibility to the information, and the affordability in acquiring any desired data or product is creating a transparent world at an alarming rate. In the future, anyone can affordably keep tabs on the actions of everyone else. Hence, the U.S. military must consciously begin to investigate ways to maintain its military advantage in this rapidly evolving, and increasingly transparent world. It must minimize the impact transparency has on how we will fight wars and conduct contingency actions. We must not be caught by surprise. Maintaining U.S. military competitiveness will require multifaceted solutions ... This study investigates how the U.S. can retain its military advantage in the coming age of transparency. The inevitable economic presure of the "web," or more generall information e-commerce, is advancing the rate of global transparency...

Book Closer Than You Think

Download or read book Closer Than You Think written by Samuel R. White (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Defense Innovation Initiative (DII), begun in November 2014 by former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, is intended to ensure U.S. military superiority throughout the 21st century. The DII seeks broad-based innovation across the spectrum of concepts, research and development, capabilities, leader development, wargaming, and business practices. An essential component of the DII is the Third Offset Strategy--a plan for overcoming (offsetting) adversary parity or advantage, reduced military force structure, and declining technological superiority in an era of great power competition. This study explored the implications for the Army of Third Offset innovations and breakthrough capabilities for the operating environment of 2035-2050. It focused less on debating the merits or feasibility of individual technologies and more on understanding the implications--the second and third order effects on the Army that must be anticipated ahead of the breakthrough.

Book The Pursuit of Technological Superiority and the Shrinking American Military

Download or read book The Pursuit of Technological Superiority and the Shrinking American Military written by Daniel R. Lake and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the US military begun to suffer from overstretch in recent decades? Why is one of the largest militaries in the world, and the most expensive by far, periodically stressed by the operational demands placed upon it? This book argues that recent problems with overstretch are the result of a heavy reliance on technology to solve tactical and strategic problems. Over the last seven decades, the US armed services have consistently chosen to push the technological frontier out in an effort to first gain, and then maintain, qualitative superiority over potential foes. The high procurement and support costs associated with cutting-edge weapon systems has resulted in a military that is shrinking in both absolute size and in the relative share of combat forces. The culmination of this process is a US military that increasingly lacks the capacity needed to conduct operations without putting significant stress on its personnel and equipment. Lake argues that this pattern is a manifestation of an American cultural disposition favoring technology. He shows that this affinity for technology is present in the organizational cultures of all the armed services, though not to the same degree. By examining procurement programs for each armed service, this book reveals how attempts to develop and leverage superior technology has resulted in some notable program failures, high procurement costs for the latest generation of equipment with associated production cuts, and the high support requirements that are causing the relative share of combat forces to shrink. Lake’s analysis of recent initiatives by the armed services suggests that this pattern is likely to continue, with the US military remaining prone to overstretch whenever its operational tempo increases above the peacetime baseline.

Book The United States Eroding Global Military Advantage Is There a Way Back

Download or read book The United States Eroding Global Military Advantage Is There a Way Back written by Fatima Munib and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the U.S. eroding global military advantage in light of the current changing security environment. First, I examine the process and type of erosion taking place. I expand the existing debate and show that the erosion is not defined in monetary terms but in terms of the declining U.S influence within the established rule-based international order. Secondly, I use China and Russia as case-studies to define the present geopolitical rivalries and the (re)emergence of revisionist powers. Both China and Russia aim to shape the emerging international order and threaten the U.S. national security with the increased inter-state competition. Thirdly, I employ the techniques of discourse, document and graph analyses to draw conclusions about the various factors contributing to the erosion. These factors can be divided into two broad categories: the categories of internal and external factors. The internal factors encompass the U.S force posture in terms of its hardline policies as well as the increased concentration within the U.S military industrial complex which curbs competition and innovation and leads to controlled government contracts and the prioritization of corporate interests over national security interests. The external factors include the present global "disorder" characterized by inter-state competition, mainly Russia's military advancement in the global defense industry and China's expansionist economic and military agenda. China's case-study concludes that its Belt Road Initiative is used as an economic tool for military expansion into various regions of Asia, Middle East and Africa. On the other hand, Russia's case-study makes the connection between its increased market share in the global defense industry hampering U.S defense corporations' arms sales and its challenge to the U.S influence in global affairs. While Russia provides a cost-conditionalities benefit to non-NATO members in its arms sales, it also seeks to impact the future of the U.S. relationship with NATO, which contains military implications for Europe as well as for the global order. Lastly, this thesis analyzes the shifting of alliances and the process of the formation of a new-world order in which the U. S. military superiority is at stake. It concludes that there is a way back for the United States to restore and sustain its global military edge based on the framework defined in my research. The findings and strategies outlined for restoration are subject to certain conditions and limitations which can determine the fate of the U.S. military might.

Book The Changing Dynamics of Military Advantage in the Information Age

Download or read book The Changing Dynamics of Military Advantage in the Information Age written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information revolution causes dramatic changes in the geopolitical environment, which result in new challenges to U.S. national security, particularly from a new form of global insurgency. The continued development and proliferation of information technology impacts the very nature of conflict and military competitive advantage. Can the U.S. expect to maintain its current unprecedented degree of military advantage in the information-age? This thesis examines this question using a qualitative research methodology. The research analyzes the impact of information technology on the geopolitical system, the nature of conflict, and the realm of military competition. Within this context, the research examines the changing nature of military advantage. Three elements of advantage are analyzed to determine qualitative changes that result from the changing conditions of the information-age. The elements are power, legitimacy, and effects. The research also includes a comparative analysis that seeks to determine how these changing conditions affect the ability of both the U.S. military and global insurgents to gain advantage. The research concludes that U.S. military advantage will decline relative to a global insurgency. As a result, the U.S. will face significant challenges in its effort to achieve lasting success in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT).

Book The art of military coercion

Download or read book The art of military coercion written by Rob de Wijk and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States spends more on its military than the rest of the world combined. And Western nations in general spend far more than developing nations around the globe. Yet when Western nations have found themselves in conflicts in recent decades, their performance has been mixed at best. In his fully updated new edition of The Art of Military Coercion, Rob de Wijk presents a theory on the use of force. He argues that the key is a failure to use force decisively, to properly understand the dynamics of conflict and balance means and ends. Without that ability, superiority of dollars, numbers, and weaponry won't necessarily translate to victory. -Rob de Wijk is the Director of the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) and Professor of International Relations and Security at the Campus the Hague of Leiden University. He was previously a Professor in the field of International Relations at the Royal Netherlands Military Academy and Head of the Defense Concepts Department at the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

Book Can the Military Elevate You to the Middle Class

Download or read book Can the Military Elevate You to the Middle Class written by Joshua King and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too many people rule out the military as an option for creating a beautiful life. I joined the Marines in 1999 with $10 in my pocket. Twenty-four years later, I am retiring and will never have to work again. That is pretty good for a poor kid from San Diego. I know the media promotes careers in the medical and engineering fields. However, a military career can be more attainable and sustainable for the average person. There are too many benefits inside the military to list, but here are some: healthcare, college, and housing down payments. If you don't have a nest egg, job, or real estate for your kids, consider looking in the military with them. It can change their fortunes forever. It did for me. Good Luck!

Download or read book Multi Domain Operations written by U S Military and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring and emerging powers are reshaping the geopolitical landscape by heavily investing in military modernization programs to achieve domain overmatch, physical stand-off, and superiority in military power. The Department of Defense published the Defense Innovation Initiative in 2014 to identify and invest in innovative ways to sustain and advance America's military dominance for the twenty-first century. Through the initiative, the Department of Defense developed a third "offset" strategy to contend in great power competition and win during armed conflict. The U.S. Army developed a new future operating concept called Multi-Domain Operations in order to support the new defense strategy, drive modernization, and prepare for the future fight. Multi-Domain Operations theory proposes three interrelated tenets that solves the problem of contested domains and Anti-Access/Aerial Denial threats presented by Chinese and Russian operations in conflict. Those tenets are calibrated force posture, multi-domain formations, and convergence. This monograph examines the efficacy of the three Multi-Domain tenets through the lens of a historical case study - Solomon Island Campaign during World War II. The case study will help drive discussion, analysis, and further refinement of the operating concept with military professionals. This compilation also includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community. Is World War III cresting the horizon as international relations and competition between great powers lay in the balance of the global commons? As enmity between great powers such as the United States, China, and Russia begin to grow through competition for economic resources, geographic sovereignty, and military superiority all in the name of national interests; the U.S. military faces complex and ill-defined challenges if pitted against a foreign conventional military with matched capability and strength. The fictional book, Ghost Fleet by P.W. Singer and August Cole conjures a terrifying and plausible future where the United States finds itself in a global war against a peer superpower. China, assisted by Russia, gain dominance in the western Pacific by leveraging a massive cyber-attack via malware in Chinese-made microchips that infects the Defense Intelligence Agency, subsequently rendering all U.S. military command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence networks obsolete allowing for a bloody attack on Pearl Harbor and occupation of the Hawaiian Islands. In the twenty-first century version of the Cold War, U.S. veterans organize into an insurgency called the North Shore Mujahedeen, teenage computer hackers battle in digital playgrounds, Silicon Valley billionaires mobilize for cyber- warfare in space to neutralize Chinese satellite warfare, and old warships from the navy reserve fleet forms a "Ghost Fleet" to fight the Chinese at sea. Private commercial companies such as Walmart contribute to the war effort by establishing a supply chain using three-dimensional printing technology. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) collapses under the geopolitical pressure of China and Russia. The employment of rail gun technology doubles the lethality of naval firepower. Ghost Fleet provides a high-tech geopolitical vision of future war and warfare. Admiral James Stavridis, United States Navy (Retired) Supreme Allied Commander of NATO said "Ghost Fleet is a startling blueprint for the wars of the future." The Army's future operating concept of multi-domain operations seeks to bridge the gap between reality and science fiction by providing a framework on how to fight and win in future wars.

Download or read book Futures Seminar written by U. S. Military and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers represent 23 different recommendations by twenty-three different Army War College students. Some ideas and recommendations are specific and affect narrow slices of the Army; others are broad and span multiple services or components. Some are tactical; others strategic. Some very aspirational; others very practical. Regardless, they are the thoughts of strategic thinkers who have embraced their responsibility to help posture the enterprise for the future by thinking and writing about tough issues. The enterprise is better for their effort. The pathway for the AY15 Seminar was built upon our exploration of a central idea - a guiding principle. Grounded by the framework provided in the October 2014 Army Operating Concept, the Seminar explored the fundamental question: "What kind of Army does the nation need in 2025 and beyond?" The Seminar moved along two separate but supporting lines. First, through classroom work the students gained an understanding the environment which will shape the Army of 2025 and beyond. The Seminar applied a variety of lens - political, military, fiscal, technological and structural - to add perspective to our vision and view. Second, the students played substantive roles in the Unified Quest 15 (UQ 15) series of workshops and wargames. UQ 15, the Army's Title 10 wargame, gave the Seminar the opportunity to experiment with emerging concepts and thought and add a robust experience to their classroom education. The beneficial outcomes of the Seminar's two lines of inquiry are this compendium of student papers, 23 Army War College graduates who are engaged and contributing to the future of the enterprise and, perhaps as importantly, hundreds of hours of thought, debate, discussion and reflection on the future Army - which also serves as the seed-corn for ideas and questions to be explored by Futures Seminar students and the Army in the years to come.Using a Grand Strategy to Build an Army of the Future * The Future of Army Futures * Adapting to Strategic Trends: Reweighing the Army's Three Components * A General Purpose Fighting Force: The Foundation to Win in the Complex World of the 21st Century * Preserving the U.S. Army's Land Combat Power * The Army Service Component Command: Criticality to Force 2025 and Beyond * Establish Permanent Joint Land Component Headquarters: Reduce or Eliminate Service Component Headquarters * The Defense of Duffers Domain * The Army Platoon as a Joint Warfighting Combat Team * The Army Engineer Regiment and the Future * Mission Command and the Future Force * Single U.S. Defense Force in the Future * Section 2: Addressing Army Capabilities * Will Technology be an Advantage or a Vulnerability for the U.S. Army in 2025 * Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations * STEM Impact on Army Warfighting Challenges and Manpower * Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Come of Age: Military Implications * Seizing Objective 2040: Develop a Single Synthetic Training Environment * Simulation: The Remedy to Future Joint Force Readiness and Leader Development * Section 3: Addressing Army Personnel Development * Adaptive Leader Training: Finding the Sweet Spot * Talent Development for the Army of the Future * Human Capital and the Future Army: Balancing Talent and Resources * Talent Management for Mission Command of an Information Age Army * Reconsidering DOPMA: A 30-Year Officer Career Timeline
