Book Midway Class Aircraft Carriers 1945 92

Download or read book Midway Class Aircraft Carriers 1945 92 written by Mark Stille and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midway-class were the US Navy's biggest carriers built during World War II. Superbly illustrated, this explains how they became the backbone of the Cold War fleet. Entering service in September 1945, the Midway-class aircraft carrier was the US Navy's ultimate World War II-era design, and these would be its frontline carriers as the Cold War dawned. A fine design and one big enough to accept significant modernizations over the decades, the class saw combat in the Vietnam War, and Midway even launched the first carrier airstrikes of the Gulf War in 1990. In this book, naval expert Mark Stille explains how the Midway class was the US Navy's attempt to build a much larger and more survivable version of the wartime Essex class; its extensive new protection system included the first armoured flight deck in the US Navy. He highlights how new weapons systems transformed the Midways during the jet age, from angled flight decks and catapults to CIWS, until Midway found her last home as a museum ship in San Diego, the only non-Essex-class American carrier to be preserved. Illustrated with archive photos and superb original art, including profiles detailing how the ships were rebuilt throughout their careers, this book explores the heart of the US Navy's carrier fleet during the early Cold War.

Book US Cold War Aircraft Carriers

Download or read book US Cold War Aircraft Carriers written by Brad Elward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forrestal class (Forrestal, Saratoga, Ranger, and Independence) was the first completed class of US Navy supercarriers, so-named for their 25 percent size increase over the World War II-era carriers such as the Midway class, and the strength of their air wings (80–100 aircraft, compared to 65–75 for the Midway, and fewer than 50 for the Essex class). Design-wise, the Forrestals were a huge improvement over their predecessors, being more stable and comfortable, while maintaining advancements such as the armored flight decks that had been introduced with the Midway. The Kitty Hawk class was an improvement on the Forrestal-class designs, and four were built in the 1960s – Kitty Hawk, Constellation, America and John F. Kennedy. These were even longer than the Forrestals, and fitted with advanced defensive weapons systems and an improved elevator layout. All nine of the carriers covered by this volume are icons, and hold a much-respected place in US naval history. They are also some of the more well-known vessels outside of the military, for their long service histories, as well as for some of the more unfortunate events that seem to follow them.

Book Midway Magic

Book excerpt: Throughout its 47-year career, the USS Midway sailed at the center of almost every international crisis and conflict in the latter half of the 20th century. Its crew set new standards of naval aviation. A captured German V-2 rocket was launched off the carrier in 1947, marking the dawn of naval missile warfare. Midway taught the Navy how to fly among the icebergs during sub-Arctic winter air operations off the coast of Greenland. Time and again, Midway rescued thousands of refugees on its humanitarian missions. During an odyssey that spanned the end of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the Cold War, detente, and even Desert Storm, Midway answered every call, both military and peacekeeping. Based on more than 300 interviews with Midway sailors who served aboard America's longest serving carrier between 1945 and 1992, readers of Midway Magic join the crew, experiencing these historic accomplishments alongside the men who were there.
