Book The Middle East Supply Centre

Download or read book The Middle East Supply Centre written by Martin W. Wilmington and published by Suny Press. This book was released on 1971 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the United States and the United Kingdom cooperated in the successful operation of a regional organization which indisputably saved the Middle East for the Allied cause and which, if perpetuated, might have formed the basis for regional peace and stability. This was the Middle East Supply Centre, whose creation, evolution, responsibilities, and activities are described analytically in this volume. It was an agency, says the author, "bestriding the Middle East economy like a giant and imposing its views and wishes on the production and consumption of nearly 100 million people toiling in a vast sub-continent." Even in the midst of global war, M.E.S.C. not only supervised the feeding of the people of the region, but also assured that industries kept producing and that the economy poured out large quantities of munitions and quartermaster items for Allied armies in the Middle East and beyond. At the end of the war, diverse proposals were made to convert M.E.S.C. into a "regional bureau" that would bring the wartime seeds of regional cooperation to permanent flowering for betterment and peace in the Middle East under the United Nations, under Anglo-American sponsorship, or under the Middle East countries themselves. Failure to obtain American participation resulted in the collapse of these efforts and M.E.S.C. was dissolved in November 1945. Beyond the author's narrative and analysis of the Centre's wartime logistical activities, he has placed the whole enterprise in a far larger setting: Anglo-American collaboration: the imperious influence of world powers; the aspirations of underdeveloped nations; and the growth in the area of "economic regionalism." Commander Sir Robert Jackson, wartime Director General of the Centre who now holds appointments with several governments in the Third World and is also Senior Consultant to the United Nations Development Programme, has written the foreword for the book, in which he views the activities--and the legacy--of the Centre from the perspective of more than 25 years.

Book Oil for Food

Download or read book Oil for Food written by Eckart Woertz and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the global food crisis of 2008, Middle Eastern oil producers have announced multi-billion investments to secure food supplies from abroad. Often called land grabs, such investments are at the heart of the global food security challenge and put the Middle East in the spotlight of simultaneous global crises in the fields of food, finance, and energy. Water scarcity here is most pronounced, import dependence growing, and the links between oil and food are manifold ranging from the economics of biofuels to climate change and the provision of crucial input factors like fuels and fertilizers. In the future the Middle East will not only play a prominent role in global oil, but also in global food markets, this time on the consumption side. In Oil for Food, Eckart Woertz analyzes the geopolitical implications behind the current investment drive of Arab Gulf countries in food insecure countries like Sudan or Pakistan. Having lived in Dubai for seven years, and drawing on extensive archival sources and interviews, he gives the inside story of how regional food security concerns have developed historically, how domestic agro-lobbies shape policy making, and how the failed attempt to develop Sudan as an Arab bread-basket in the 1970s carries important lessons for today. The book argues against the media hype that has been created around land grabs and analyzes why there has been such a gap between announced projects and their actual implementation. Instead, it calls for a revision of Gulf food security policies and suggests policy alternatives. It is essential reading for academics interested in the political economy of the Gulf region and for practitioners in governments, the media, and international organizations who deal with contemporary food security and energy issues.

Book American Grand Strategy in the Mediterranean during World War II

Download or read book American Grand Strategy in the Mediterranean during World War II written by Andrew Buchanan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a thorough reinterpretation of US engagement with the Mediterranean during World War II. Andrew Buchanan argues that the United States was far from being a reluctant participant in a 'peripheral' theater, and that Washington had a major grand-strategic interest in the region. By the end of the war the Mediterranean was essentially an American lake, and the United States had substantial political and economic interests extending from North Africa, via Italy and the Balkans, to the Middle East. This book examines the military, diplomatic, and economic processes by which this hegemonic position was assembled and consolidated. It discusses the changing character of the Anglo-American alliance, the establishment of post-war spheres of influence, the nature of presidential leadership, and the common interest of all the leaders of the 'Grand Alliance' in blocking the development of potentially revolutionary movements emerging from the chaos of war, occupation, and economic breakdown.

Book Britain and the Politics of Modernization in the Middle East 1945 1958

Download or read book Britain and the Politics of Modernization in the Middle East 1945 1958 written by Paul W. T. Kingston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an historically informed critique of the theory and practice of development assistance, this book examines Britain's foreign aid programme in the Middle East in the 1940s and 1950s. After an assessment of the origins of what was dubbed the 'peasants, not pashas' policy - notably the link between development, sterling balances, and post-war imperial strategy - the author focuses on planning and policy debates between British development experts, their American rivals, and Middle Eastern technocrats. These debates, which centred on issues such as afforestation, irrigation, and rural credit, raise important questions about the nature and limits of the development process within the Middle East and the Third World which the author explores in his analysis. This 1996 book will be of interest to development practitioners and scholars in development studies, as well as to students of Middle East and imperial history.

Book Iran Under Allied Occupation In World War II

Download or read book Iran Under Allied Occupation In World War II written by Mohammad Gholi Majd and published by UPA. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupied Iran in World War II became the most important supply route to Russia and source of fuel to the Allies. Having pledged to meet Iran’s “minimum needs”, the Allies commandeered the means of transport, seized food and fuel, severely restricted imports, forced Iran to print money, brought Polish refugees from Russia, and initially did little to contain the chaos and insecurity. The resulting famine and typhus epidemic of 1942-43 had claimed 4 million lives amounting to a quarter of the population. This was in addition to the 8-10 million lost in the Great Famine of 1917-19. Iran’s 1944 population was the same as 1900, a perfect case of a Malthusian Catastrophe. Having previously described the World War I famine, and using US diplomatic, military, and intelligence records, as well as primary British sources, Majd completes the task by also telling the story of the World War II Iranian famine.

Book Routledge Handbook of Middle East Politics

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Middle East Politics written by Larbi Sadiki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on various perspectives and analysis, the Handbook problematizes Middle East politics through an interdisciplinary prism, seeking a melioristic account of the field. Thematically organized, the chapters address political, social, and historical questions by showcasing both theoretical and empirical insights, all of which are represented in a style that ease readers into sophisticated induction in the Middle East. It positions the didactic at the centre of inquiry. Contributions by forty-four scholars, both veterans and newcomers, rethink knowledge frames, conceptual categories, and fieldwork praxis. Substantive themes include secularity and religion, gender, democracy, authoritarianism, and new "borderline" politics of the Middle East. Like any field of knowledge, the Middle East is constituted by texts, authors, and readers, but also by the cultural, spatial, and temporal contexts within which diverse intellectual inflections help construct (write–speak) academic meaning, knowing, and practice. By denaturalizing notions of singularity of authorship or scholarship, the Handbook plants a dialogic interplay animated by multi-vocality, multi-modality, and multi-disciplinarity. Targeting graduate students and young scholars of political and social sciences, the Handbook is significant for understanding how the Middle East is written and re-written, read and re-read (epistemology, methodology), and for how it comes to exist (ontology).
