Book The Microscope and Its Revelations Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Microscope and Its Revelations Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William B. Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope and Its Revelations, Vol. 1 The rapid increase which has recently taken place in the use of the Microscope, - both as an instrument of scientific research, and as a means of gratifying a laudable curiosity and of obtaining a healthful recreation, - has naturally led to a demand for information, both as to the mode of employing the Instrument and its appurtenances, and as to the Objects for whose minute examination it is most appropriate. This information the Author has endeavored to supply in the following Treatise; in which he has aimed to combine, within a moderate compass, that information in regard to the use of his Instrument and its Appliances which is most essential to the working Microscopist, with such an account of the Objects best fitted for his study as may qualify him to comprehend what he observes, and thus prepare him to benefit Science whilst expanding and refreshing his own mind. The sale of five large Editions of this Manual, with the many spontaneous testimonies to its usefulness which the Author has received from persons previously unknown to him, justify the belief that it has not inadequately supplied an existing want; and in the preparation of the new Edition now called-for, therefore, he has found no reason to deviate from his original plan, whilst he has endeavored to improve its execution as to every point which seemed capable of amended treatment. In his account of the various forms of Microscopes and Accessory Apparatus, the Author has not attempted to describe everything which is used in this country; still less, to go into minute details respecting the construction of foreign instruments. He is satisfied that in nearly all which relates both to the mechanical and the optical arrangements of their instruments, the chief English Microscope-makers are quite on a level with, if not in advance of, their Continental rivals; but, on the other hand, the latter have supplied instruments which are adequate to all the ordinary purposes of scientific research, at a lower price than such could until recently be obtained in this country. Several British makers, however, are now devoting themselves to the production of Microscopes which shall be really good though cheap; and the Author cannot but view with great satisfaction the extension of the manufacture in this direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Microscopy and Natural Science, 1888, Vol. 1 I am certain that you all agree with me how grateful we ought to be to our Secretary for the trouble and care he takes in its issue and in the welfare of the Society, and feel that it is our bounden duty to assist him in this task to the utmost of our ability. Perhaps one of the best ways of doing this would be to try and get more new members, which ought to be done pretty easily, as our subscription is very small, and we occupy a position with reference to microscopy which ought to be most serviceable and agreeable to many of us quiet students of nature. Our method of communication being by post, we are enabled to reach all parts of the kingdom with great facility, and thus being brought into direct communication with each other are able to mutually assist members both in theory and practice. It seems superfluous to remind microscopists of the great charms of the study of the infinitely little, but as there may be some present who have not engaged in that study, perhaps those familiar with microscope work will allow me briefly to summarise what are some of its great attractions. Microscopical work is one of those studies which can be pursued everywhere, for there is no place where objects for study may not be found, added to which it is quite independent of the weather or of the time of day, as artificial light can always be used, and in fact many microscopists seldom use any other. Then it is a silent work, and disturbs no one, and requires but a small space for the apparatus. It also tends to develop habits of care and neatness, as the smallest speck of dirt shows most prominently under the lens, and without neatness it is impossible to keep the instrument in order, much more SO to make any accurate observations. Again, the patient investigation required, the measuring and drawing of those Objects under examination, create very careful habits of Observation, which react on the observer and make him more careful in other matters. To do away with one of the processes that modern methods seem to consider necessary will be a boon. By the use of the Oil of cajeput the Worker can simplify his methods by discarding the absolute alcohol, and thus not only save himself considerable trouble and some time, but some expense, as an Object cleared, or soaked in oil of cloves, can not well be transferred from it to balsam without the intervention of absolute alcohol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscope, 1892, Vol. 12: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine for the Student of Nature's Little Things Microooocus oromrsns (raovxsronu. Name, perhaps), N. S. Oocci, very large, oval, oblong, or less frequently spherical, with a bright spore or nucleus variously placed; light translucent bodies with a very thin cell wall and clearish contents. Measure ments of those of circular outlines 4, rarely 5, u, in diameter; of the ovals 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, in longest diameter, rare individuals much longer, by 3, 4, 511 wide, or slightly more or less; the very longest specimens often contain two or three nuclei, but no chain-like forms; sometimes none of these would be seen in a dense field of the cocci. This is decidedly the largest, most bold-looking Micrococcus I have yet seen or have read of. It is magnificent. At first I thought I had large fields full of some mould spores. It occurs singly, often so numerous in old rot ting onion bulbs as to fill the field of the microscope very densely in a single layer. It appears soon after the Bacterium refringente, also in the water-mounted slides kept for several days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Quekett Microscopical Club, Vol. 1 The student who confines himself to English books, and shuts his eyes and ears to everything German, French, or Italian, will hardly have experienced any trouble or annoyance from the fact that, in describing a microscopical object, our continental neighbours universally employ a measurement which is as strange to us as their language, and expressed in terms of the value of which we have no experience. As now used, the dimensions of objects require translation as much as the language in which the description is written, with the disadvantage that the translation is not so readily made, or the power of translating so easily applied. We may suppose that the description of a minute object, be it diatom, insect, or mould, is written, as it always should be, in Latin; the measurements, however, though expressed sometimes in Latin, are more commonly read from a standard which is to us practically unknown. It will be better, in the first instance, to look over the map of the world, and see in what civilised portions microscopic study is pursued, and what is the unit of measurement adopted, before we attempt any project to remedy the evil. We may fairly confine ourselves to Europe and America, without fear lest Asia and Africa should protest against being left out, because all the students in those regions will be "exports" from Europe or America. Australia is not much troubled with microscopical students. Her sons have not yet found time to stand for hours at one end of a microscope.
