Book The Met and Unmet Needs of Families of Patients in the Icu

Download or read book The Met and Unmet Needs of Families of Patients in the Icu written by Heather Sheaffer and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The qualitative research study detailed in this book seeks an understanding of the experience and needs of family members of patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) at a large, metropolitan hospital. The study in this text utilized a self-developed, semi-structured interview, transitioning the findings of the The Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI) (Molter, & Leske, 1983) into open-ended interview questions. The interviews queried participants about their needs related to their family member's stay in the ICU, their interactions with the health care team and any recommendations they wished to offer to family members of patients in the ICU and to the health care team. The interviews yielded multiple needs of family members of patients in the ICU including the need for: communication, information, visitation, vigilance, assurance, and "realistic hope." Additional research investigating interventions designed to meet the families' needs and the role of social work in the ICU in meeting these needs is also indicated.

Book excerpt: The importance of palliative care for children facing life threatening illness and their families is now widely acknowledged as an essential part of care, which should be available to all children and families, throughout the child's illness and at the end of life. The new edition of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Care for Children brings together the most up to date information, current knowledge, evidence, and developments of clinical practice in the field. The book is structured into four sections. 'Foundations of Care' describes core issues, the foundations on which paediatric palliative care is based. 'Child and Family Care' looks at different aspects of psychological, social, and cultural care for the sick child or young person, and their family. These chapters cover the time course of the illness, around the time of death and support for the bereaved family. 'Symptom Care' focuses on the uses of medication, specific symptoms, and their management. Finally, 'Delivery of Care' examines practical approaches to care in different environments and the needs of clinicians. Two new editors join the team from Canada and South Africa, reflecting our aims to contribute towards the development of care for children across the world, and to be a resource for both experienced clinicians and those new to the field. Comprehensive in scope, exhaustive in detail, and definitive in authority, this third edition has been thoroughly updated to cover new practices, current epidemiological data, and the evolving models that support the delivery of palliative medicine to children. This includes two new chapters, looking in detail at 'Decision Making' and 'Perinatal Care', and a new section highlighting the emerging importance of 'Palliative Care for Children in Humanitarian Crises'. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing Research: Reading, Using, and Creating Evidence, Fifth Edition is a foundational text for teaching and learning the basics of creating and using evidence in nursing practice. Written in a conversational tone, the hallmark of this text is its readability and the author’s skillfulness in simplifying otherwise complex topics such as evidence-based care, qualitative and quantitative studies, and translation of research to practice. Nurses need to demonstrate proficiency in reading research, determining its use in their practice, and participating in the research process. The Fifth Edition is intuitively organized around the three main competencies - reading, using, and creating evidence - all of which enable the student to translate research into evidence in a practical way. This text is intended to teach and support the clinical practice of students, professional nurses returning to school, and practicing nurses that must apply evidence to patient care.
