Book The Merry Order of St Bridget Personal Recollections of Corporal Punishment

Download or read book The Merry Order of St Bridget Personal Recollections of Corporal Punishment written by Margaret Anson and published by . This book was released on 2010-04-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Merry Order of St. Bridget is a celebrated piece of mid-Victorian underground literature. The narrator is a young woman who writes a series of letters to her friend, describing her adventures with a secret society of female flagellants. A British magazine had claimed that such a club existed on London's Jermyn Street in 1792, and this report may have provided the inspiration for The Merry Order of St. Bridget. Set in a romanticized version of a French chateau, the work also forms a literary predecessor to many modern fantasies. The author was an Edinburgh actor, bookseller, and journalist, whose other works include The Language of Flowers (1852), The Story of a Stolen Heir (3 volumes, 1858), Glimpses of Real Life as Seen in the Theatrical World and in Bohemia (1864), Harvest of the Sea (1865), and Flagellation and the Flagellants: A History of the Rod (1870).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merry Order of St. Bridget: Personal Recollections of the Use of the Rod My dear Marion, I am sure you must have wondered what has become of me in all these years (three, isn't it?) since we met at Lord E 's place. Perhaps you won't care to hear from me again, and will fancy I have forgotten our old friendship; indeed, my dear, it is not so, but I've been knocking about a bit, and seen the world. I've been in Paris two years in two different places, and learned as much in that time as many folks do in a lifetime. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Book Justice Brennan

Download or read book Justice Brennan written by Seth Stern and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Will likely be the definitive biography. . . . a detailed and fascinating account of how the Supreme Court functioned during Brennan’s long tenure.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) This is a compelling inside look at the life of William Brennan, a champion of free speech who is widely considered the most influential Supreme Court justice of the twentieth century. Before his death, Brennan granted Stephen Wermiel access to volumes of personal and court materials that at the time were sealed to the public for another two decades. This “coveted set of documents,” as Jeffrey Toobin described it, includes Brennan’s case histories—in which he recorded strategies behind major battles including Roe v. Wade, affirmative action, the death penalty, obscenity law, and the constitutional right to privacy—as well as more personal documents that reveal some of Brennan’s curious contradictions, like his refusal to hire female clerks even as he wrote groundbreaking women’s rights decisions; his complex stance as a justice and a Catholic; and details on Brennan’s unprecedented working relationship with Chief Justice Earl Warren. In this biography, Wermiel and Seth Stern distill decades of valuable information into a seamless, riveting portrait of the man behind the Court’s most liberal era. “The most comprehensive and well-organized look at the legendary liberal jurist to date.” —The New York Times “Seats the reader in Brennan’s chambers to listen to his conversations and see the memoranda exchanged with other justices and his law clerks.” —Newark Star Ledger “The authors balance differing accounts of Brennan the jurist and the man, presenting an evenhanded portrait of the affable but stubborn Justice.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Women Writers and Old Age in Great Britain 1750 1850

Download or read book Women Writers and Old Age in Great Britain 1750 1850 written by Devoney Looser and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study explores the later lives and late-life writings of more than two dozen British women authors active during the long eighteenth century. Drawing on biographical materials, literary texts, and reception histories, Devoney Looser finds that far from fading into moribund old age, female literary greats such as Anna Letitia Barbauld, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Catharine Macaulay, Hester Lynch Piozzi, and Jane Porter toiled for decades after they achieved acclaim -- despite seemingly concerted attempts by literary gatekeepers to marginalize their later contributions. Though these remarkable women wrote and published well into old age, Looser sees in their late careers the necessity of choosing among several different paths. These included receding into the background as authors of "classics," adapting to grandmotherly standards of behavior, attempting to reshape masculinized conceptions of aged wisdom, or trying to create entirely new categories for older women writers. In assessing how these writers affected and were affected by the culture in which they lived, and in examining their varied reactions to the prospect of aging, Looser constructs careful portraits of each of her Subjects and explains why many turned toward retrospection in their later works. In illuminating the powerful and often poorly recognized legacy of the British women writers who spurred a marketplace revolution in their earlier years only to find unanticipated barriers to acceptance in later life, Looser opens up new scholarly territory in the burgeoning field of feminist age studies.

Book History Of Corporal Punishment

Download or read book History Of Corporal Punishment written by George Ryley Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2005. This is a wide-ranging study of flagellation in all its aspects - disciplinary, religious, educational and erotic. It presents a mass of detailed information on the various forms of flogging administered through the ages to thieves, prostitutes, soldiers, sailors, heretics, penitents, slaves, servants, schoolboys and schoolgirls. Scott's aim was to present the complete story of flagellation and its attendant mixture of cruelty, eroticism, superstition, voluptuousness and persecution. All the historical, sociological, psychological and anthropological aspects of the practice are examined, in order to understand the full significance of flagellation as a social phenomenon. The physical, psychological and pathological effects of corporal punishment, including the effects of flagellation on sexual health, are also analysed. The book is divided into four parts - the psychology of flagellation, penal flagellation, religious flagellation and the case for and against corporal punishment - with illustrations and a useful bibliography. Written in 1938, this remains an authoritative work on the subject.

Book excerpt: A Passion for Performance: Sarah Siddons and Her Portraitists brings together three engaging essays – by Robyn Asleson, Shelley Bennett and Mark Leonard, and Shearer West – that recreate the eventful life, both on and off the stage, of the great eighteenth-century actress Sarah Siddons. Siddons was renowned for her bravura performances in tragic roles, and her fame was enhanced by the many portraits of her painted by the leading artists of the day. The greatest of these was Sir Joshua Reynolds’s Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse, a painting now in the Huntington Art Collections and recently studied at the Getty Center. A Passion for Performance places this magnificent portrait within the context of Siddons’s career as an actress and cultural icon. Includes a chronology of Siddons’s life by volume editor Robyn Asleson.
