Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When pain can be sealed away and forgotten, what else is lost? In this mesmerizing science fiction novel The Melody of Memory, prepare to be transported to Tyra, a troubled world plagued by cycles of collapse and darkness that have haunted its colonists for centuries. As civilization begins to claw its way back from the brink, a haunting question emerges—will the curse repeat itself once more? For amidst the tragic cycles, a unique technology persists—a way to tie traumatic memories to melodies and store them away in boxes. While this gift can be a blessing, it has also become a tool of repression, inhibiting humanity's growth and ability to learn from past mistakes, for no one remembers making them, and the cycle continues. Enter Aya. Caught on the wrong side of the border as a child, Aya Voss has always been unlucky. Separated from her homeland and family, she endures a life of isolation and torment, perpetually an outsider. Forced to abandon her education and manufacture weapons against her own people, Aya struggles to survive while yearning to reconnect with the loved ones she left behind. War, plague, and madness ravage her world, tearing away everything she holds dear. Can Aya and her new generation break free from this destructive cycle and forge a new destiny? The Melody of Memory weaves a compelling coming-of-age story as Aya finds herself thrust into a revolution—a revolution fueled by courage, purpose, and the determination to heal a wounded world. With each step, she discovers the strength to transcend her own pain and help shape a brighter future for Tyra. Written by the incomparable Cheryl Brin, The Melody of Memory provokes deep meditation on how humans process pain. Buy today and join the conversation.

Book excerpt: Alfred Busi lives alone in his villa overlooking the waves. Famed in his tiny Mediterranean town for his music, he is mourning the recent death of his wife and quietly living out his days. Then one night, Busi is viciously attacked by an intruder in his own courtyard—bitten and scratched. He insists his assailant was neither man nor animal. Soon, Busi’s account of what happened is being embellished to fan the flames of old rumor—of an ancient race of people living in the surrounding forest. It is also used to spark new controversy, inspiring claims that something must finally be done about the town’s poor, whose numbers have been growing. In trademark crystalline prose, Jim Crace portrays a man taking stock of his life and looking into an uncertain future, while bearing witness to a community in the throes of great change.

But why music excites such deep passions, and how we make sense of musical sound at all, are questions that have until recently remained unanswered. Now in The Music Instinct, award-winning writer Philip Ball provides the first comprehensive, accessible survey of what is known--and still unknown--about how music works its magic, and why, as much as eating and sleeping, it seems indispensable to humanity. Deftly weaving together the latest findings in brain science with history, mathematics, and philosophy, The Music Instinct not only deepens our appreciation of the music we love, but shows that we would not be ourselves without it. The Sunday Times hailed it as "a wonderful account of why music matters," with Ball's "passion for music evident on every page."

Book River of Tears

  • Author : Alexander Dent
  • Publisher : Duke University Press

Download or read book River of Tears written by Alexander Dent and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River of Tears is the first ethnography of Brazilian country music, one of the most popular genres in Brazil yet least-known outside it. Beginning in the mid-1980s, commercial musical duos practicing música sertaneja reached beyond their home in Brazil’s central-southern region to become national bestsellers. Rodeo events revolving around country music came to rival soccer matches in attendance. A revival of folkloric rural music called música caipira, heralded as música sertaneja’s ancestor, also took shape. And all the while, large numbers of Brazilians in the central-south were moving to cities, using music to support the claim that their Brazil was first and foremost a rural nation. Since 1998, Alexander Sebastian Dent has analyzed rural music in the state of São Paulo, interviewing and spending time with listeners, musicians, songwriters, journalists, record-company owners, and radio hosts. Dent not only describes the production and reception of this music, he also explains why the genre experienced such tremendous growth as Brazil transitioned from an era of dictatorship to a period of intense neoliberal reform. Dent argues that rural genres reflect a widespread anxiety that change has been too radical and has come too fast. In defining their music as rural, Brazil’s country musicians—whose work circulates largely in cities—are criticizing an increasingly inescapable urban life characterized by suppressed emotions and an inattentiveness to the past. Their performances evoke a river of tears flowing through a landscape of loss—of love, of life in the countryside, and of man’s connections to the natural world.

Book Musicophilia

  • Publisher : Vintage Canada
  • Release : 2010-02-05

  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Musicophilia written by Oliver Sacks and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-02-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What goes on in human beings when they make or listen to music? What is it about music, what gives it such peculiar power over us, power delectable and beneficent for the most part, but also capable of uncontrollable and sometimes destructive force? Music has no concepts, it lacks images; it has no power of representation, it has no relation to the world. And yet it is evident in all of us–we tap our feet, we keep time, hum, sing, conduct music, mirror the melodic contours and feelings of what we hear in our movements and expressions. In this book, Oliver Sacks explores the power music wields over us–a power that sometimes we control and at other times don’t. He explores, in his inimitable fashion, how it can provide access to otherwise unreachable emotional states, how it can revivify neurological avenues that have been frozen, evoke memories of earlier, lost events or states or bring those with neurological disorders back to a time when the world was much richer. This is a book that explores, like no other, the myriad dimensions of our experience of and with music.

Book Melodies of the Mind

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julie Jaffee Nagel
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-11-27
  • ISBN : 1136155988
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book Melodies of the Mind written by Julie Jaffee Nagel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can psychoanalysis learn from music? What can music learn from psychoanalysis? Can the analysis of music itself provide a primary source of psychological data? Drawing on Freud's concept of the oral road to the unconscious, Melodies of the Mind invites the reader to take a journey on an aural and oral road that explores both music and emotion, and their links to the unconscious. In this book, Julie Jaffee Nagel discusses how musical and psychoanalytic concepts inform each other, showing the ways that music itself provides an exceptional non-verbal pathway to emotion – a source of 'quasi' psychoanalytical clinical data. The interdisciplinary synthesis of music and psychoanalytic knowledge provides a schema for understanding the complexity of an individual's inner world as that world interacts with social 'reality'. There are three main areas explored: The Aural Road Moods and Melodies The Aural/Oral Road Less Travelled Melodies of the Mind is an exploration of the power of music to move us when words fall short. It suggests the value of using music and ideas of the mind to better understand and address psychological, social, and educational issues that are relevant in everyday life. It will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychologists, music therapists, musicians, music teachers, music students, social workers, educators, professionals in the humanities and social services as well as music lovers. Julie Jaffee Nagel is a graduate of The Juilliard School, The University of Michigan, and The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. She is on the faculty of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and is in private practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
