De Perthes made known to the scientific world that the alluvium of the Somme contained Hints which had certainly been worked byman. Excerpt: The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites around the French village of Carnac, in Brittany, consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. The more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany, and are the largest such collection in the world. Local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legion turned to stone by Merlin or Saint Cornelius - Brittany has its own local versions of the Arthurian cycle. A Christian legend associated with the stones held that they were pagan soldiers in pursuit of Pope Cornelius when he turned them to stone. Most of the stones are within the Breton village of Carnac, but some to the east are within La Trinite-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC. In recent centuries, many of the sites have been neglected, with reports of dolmens being used as sheep shelters, chicken sheds or even ovens. Even more commonly, stones have been removed to make way for roads, or as building materials. The continuing management of the sites remains a controversial topic. There are three major groups of stone rows - Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan - which may have once formed a single group, but have been split up as stones were removed for other purposes....

Book Statements in Stone

Book excerpt: The megalithic monuments of Western Europe cover a period of over 2,000 years, from the earliest neolithic to the beginning of the Bronze Age, and have excited the popular imagination for centuries. Based on the evidence of recent excavations, and the most up-to-date and controversial theoretical perspectives of archaeology, Statements in Stone is the first account to put the megalithic traditions of Brittany in a social context and to develop a social model to account for their emergence and development.

Book Aligning Megalithic Sites of Southern England and Carnac France with Groundwater Features

Download or read book Aligning Megalithic Sites of Southern England and Carnac France with Groundwater Features written by David W Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses several megalithic sites in southern England and Carnac, France, and their relationship to areas of higher permeability (concentrated flows) within the groundwater. In spite of diverse beliefs and environments, as well as, during different historical periods, various aspects of cultural uniformity prevailed which are associated with this concept. Johnson and his colleagues have investigated sites throughout the United States, Canada, Peru and Chile, as well as, in Europe and East Africa. This data strongly suggests this was an ancient universal human concept which aligned the under, present and spiritual worlds. The English sites include Stonehenge, Avebury Complex, Maiden Castle, Carn Euny Iron Age Village, Drizzlecombe Stone Rows and Cerne Abbas Giant among others. The Carnac sites include the Méne, Kermario, Kerlescan Alignments, the Locmariaquer Megalithic Complex including La Table des Marchands Dolmen, Grand Menhir Er-Grah and Er-Grah Tumulus and several additional tumulus and dolmens. The book includes one hundred-forty eight colored images including maps and stone features.

Book From Carnac to Callanish

  • Author : Aubrey Burl
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1993-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300055757
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book From Carnac to Callanish written by Aubrey Burl and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the lines of standing stones that until now have been the neglected wonders of prehistoric Europe, rows that were foci of rituals in Britain, Ireland and Brittany for over two thousand years. Places such as Carnac in Brittany and Callanish in the Hebrides are visited by many visitors each year, but before now there has been no book that seriously explains the history, significance and background to these impressive sites. Aubrey Burl shows that the settings vary from pairs of isolated stones in the far south-west of Ireland to networks of long lines in Scotland, Dartmoor and Brittany, and describes the types in a sequence of architectural chapters that stress the increasing social and commercial connections between regions hundred of miles apart. He uses information from a wide variety of sources - excavation reports, megalithic art, astronomical analyses and legends - to provide explanations of why the rows were erected, when, and what they may have been used for.
