Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Iliffe's 1998 book is a history of the African medical profession in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from the earliest training of modern medical staff in the 1870s to the present day. Based on extensive research, and dealing exclusively with African doctors, it offers an understanding of professionalisation in the Third World. It describes the recruitment and education of doctors, their understanding and practice of modern medicine, the struggle for international recognition of their qualifications and efforts to develop East African medical systems after independence, and their experiences during a period of political and economic difficulty. The book ends with an account of the significant work of East African doctors in the study and control of AIDS. This is a major contribution to the social history of Africa and to the social history of medicine more broadly.

Book Psychiatry and Decolonisation in Uganda

Download or read book Psychiatry and Decolonisation in Uganda written by Yolana Pringle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book investigates psychiatry in Uganda during the years of decolonisation. It examines the challenges facing a new generation of psychiatrists as they took over responsibility for psychiatry at the end of empire, and explores the ways psychiatric practices were tied to shifting political and development priorities, periods of instability, and a broader context of transnational and international exchange. At its heart is a question that has concerned psychiatrists globally since the mid-twentieth century: how to bridge the social and cultural gap between psychiatry and its patients? Bringing together archival research with oral histories, Yolana Pringle traces how this question came to dominate both national and international discussions on mental health care reform, including at the World Health Organization, and helped spur a culture of experimentation and creativity globally. As Pringle shows, however, the history of psychiatry during the years of decolonisation remained one of marginality, and ultimately, in the context of war and violence, the decolonisation of psychiatry was incomplete.

Book The Patient

Download or read book The Patient written by Olive Kobusingye and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patient is the story of Ugandan doctors and their patients through the decades. It’s the story of mostly young enthusiastic medical students becoming doctors, and choosing their paths in a corrupt and impoverished world where their own needs, wellbeing, and sanity, compete with the needs of their patients. It is the story of a hospital badly in need of healing, a health care system that is designed to fail, and a country whose continuing existence is proof that resilient and subservient people can survive exploitation and abuse for a long time. It is the story of a society coming unstuck at the seams, of leaders blinded by power and greed, and of health workers sacrificing their lives to help their patients. It is the story of the patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The Colonial Medical Service was the personnel section of the Colonial Service, employing the doctors who tended to the health of both the colonial staff and the local populations of the British Empire. Although the Service represented the pinnacle of an elite government agency, its reach in practice stretched far beyond the state, with the members of the African service collaborating, formally and informally, with a range of other non-governmental groups. This collection of essays on the Colonial Medical Service of Africa illustrates the diversity and active collaborations to be found in the untidy reality of government medical provision. The authors present important case studies covering former British colonial dependencies in Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar. They reveal many new insights into the enactments of colonial policy and the ways in which colonial doctors negotiated the day-to-day reality during the height of imperial rule in Africa. The book provides essential reading for scholars and students of colonial history, medical history and colonial administration.
