Download or read book The Records of Denbigh and Its Lordship Vol 1 written by John Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Records of Denbigh and Its Lordship, Vol. 1: Bearing Upon the General History of the County of Denbigh Since the Conquest of Wales; With Many Gems of Welsh Mediaeval Poetry Never Before Published The change which the world undergoes in the course of a few centuries is really marvellous, as the following Records convince us. What a mighty revolution the last five hundred years have brought about in the value of property, the tenure of land, the state of society, the distinction of class or caste, the character, language, and religion of the inhabitants of districts ! The following pages carry us back, as it were in a dream, to times when England planted her colonies, not along the shores of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but among the hills and valleys of Wales; - times when great military lords fortified themselves on the tops of the highest eminences, and when there were few or no landed gentry, or great commercial men, the present staff and stay of society. Nay, these Records bring us, in reflection, to those primitive simple times when princes actually took their revenue in kind - just in so many lambs, or thraves of oats - the chief grain then raised - so many dishes of meal, couples of fowl, dozens of eggs, or pots of butter; so many days ploughing and harrowing in spring and reaping in autumn; or so many "meals of meat," nights' lodging, or other provision, for the king's servants, horses, and dogs. These Records also illustrate the ancient Welsh laws, and system of political economy, and bring to light a great fact not found in the common "histories" of our country; viz.: - that great numbers of the Welsh, the legitimate proprietors of the soil, either "died contrary to the peace," or fled their country for ever, during the reigns of "the Three Edwards," A.D. 1284 -1334. So far as the Lordship of Denbigh may be taken as a sample of the whole "state of Wales" there were few, very few, or no great Welsh proprietors left after the complete Conquest of the Principality. Montacute drew nearly four times as much revenue as De Lacy received from this Lordship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
