  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book The Radio Noise Spectrum written by Donald Howard Menzel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1960 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern era has had many names: the golden age, the machine age, the atomic age, the electronic age, and so on. One further title, hitherto unpublicized, it eminently deserves: the age of noise. Man has compounded the natural noise that preceded his existence on the earth until no point on this globe is free from it. Even in the desert's hush, radio waves pervade the air and provide a source of potential noise. The shorter waves escape from the earth and fill interplanetary space with the mingled clamor of FM, TV, radar, and other insistent voices. This book deals with the important problem of radio noise, its sources, whether manmade or natural, over the known range of frequencies. Certain of these contributions will interest the communicator, enabling him to estimate the potential interference from various types of sources. Other contributions deal mainly with scientific problems, such as the origins and significance of certain characteristic noise radiations. The contributors to this book are experts on the various phases of radio noise. The individual chapters derive from papers presented at a Conference on Radio Noise, held at Harvard College Observatory, April 22, 1958.

Book Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry

Download or read book Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry written by W.M Boerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization, and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the ~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop (1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last workshop was requested by its participants to take place during 1993 September 19-25.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of how technological failures defined nature and national identity in Cold War Canada. Throughout the modern period, nations defined themselves through the relationship between nature and machines. Many cast themselves as a triumph of technology over the forces of climate, geography, and environment. Some, however, crafted a powerful alternative identity: they defined themselves not through the triumph of machines over nature, but through technological failures and the distinctive natural orders that caused them. In The Unreliable Nation, Edward Jones-Imhotep examines one instance in this larger history: the Cold War–era project to extend reliable radio communications to the remote and strategically sensitive Canadian North. He argues that, particularly at moments when countries viewed themselves as marginal or threatened, the identity of the modern nation emerged as a scientifically articulated relationship between distinctive natural phenomena and the problematic behaviors of complex groups of machines. Drawing on previously unpublished archival documents and recently declassified materials, Jones-Imhotep shows how Canadian defense scientists elaborated a distinctive “Northern” natural order of violent ionospheric storms and auroral displays, and linked it to a “machinic order” of severe and widespread radio disruptions throughout the country. Tracking their efforts through scientific images, experimental satellites, clandestine maps, and machine architectures, he argues that these scientists naturalized Canada's technological vulnerabilities as part of a program to reimagine the postwar nation. The real and potential failures of machines came to define Canada, its hostile Northern nature, its cultural anxieties, and its geo-political vulnerabilities during the early Cold War. Jones-Imhotep's study illustrates the surprising role of technological failures in shaping contemporary understandings of both nature and nation.
