Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Views of Electricity The most interesting and important portion of physics at the present day is that constantly growing portion which is concerned with the properties and function of the universal connecting medium, the ether. All the phenomena of light, of electricity, and of magnetism, as well as of what is spoken of as radiant heat, are intimately connected with, and indeed Wholly dependent on, that medium; it is through these agencies that We have gradually become aware of its existence and able in some degree to Investigate it. Probably gravitation, cohesion, and chemical affinity are no less Closely associated with the ether; and it is becoming doubtful Whether matter itself could exist without it. The first successful carbon filament was made in 1879, this filament being formed from strips of bamboo. The names of Edison and Swan are intimately connected with these early experiments. Book A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by James Clerk Maxwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 In describing the phenomena, I shall select those which most clearly illustrate the fundamental ideas of the theory, omitting others, or reserving them till the reader is more advanced. The most important aspect of any phenomenon from a mathematical point of view is that of a measurable quantity. I shall therefore consider electrical pheno mena chiefly with a view to their measurement, de scribing the methods of measurement, and defining the standards on which they depend. In the application of mathematics to the calculation of electrical quantities, I shall endeavour in the first place to deduce the most general conclusions from the data at our disposal, and in the next place to apply the results to the simplest cases that can be chosen. I shall avoid, as much as I can, those questions which, though they have elicited the skill of mathematicians, have not enlarged our knowledge of science. Book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint written by Sydney George Starling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Electricity AN attempt has been made in this book to represent the subject of electricity in a logical manner, and to keep in View its present-day aspect as well as its history. Magnetism is no longer treated as a separate subject, as modern theory holds that magnetism is an attribute of electricity in motion, that is, of the electric current. As an introduction to the subject one of the most familiar applications of electricity is Chosen - the electric incandescent lamp, and from this the rest is developed. Those branches of magnetism which stand apart from the main thread of the treatment of electricity, namely, terrestrial magnetism and the magnetic properties of materials, are relegated to the two last chapters. One of the most difficult conceptions for the student, that of potential, is introduced in the treatment of electricity at rest, that is, electrostatics, as it is here a simple quantity. Its relation to the rate of working in the case of a current then follows easily. While fitted for classes of students studying electricity with an examination in view, the book is also intended to give them a wide outlook upon the subject in its present state of development. For this reason chapters on electric waves and wireless telegraphy and telephony, electrons and X-rays and radioactivity are added; in fact there is a tendency in modern examinations to introduce these subjects to a small extent in order to make electricity a living rather than a historical subject. Only well-established facts have been included, but these prepare the way for the intensely interesting subject of the modern theories of the constitution of matter which the student may follow later. Book Practical Measurements in Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Measurements in Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint written by George A. Hoadley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Measurements in Magnetism and Electricity The student who makes these experiments should keep careful notes, adding to the apparatus recommended any thing that may seem desirable, varying the manipulation, and drawing such conclusions as the experiment teaches. He should also keep a full set of notes on observations made. The accuracy and fullness of these notes will be an index of the benefit that he is receiving from the work. N o attempt has been made to cover more than a small part of the field; but the belief is entertained that a thorough familiarity with the principles and experiments outlined in this book will provide a good foundation for a more extended study, or for the practical application of these principles to the requirements of practice. Book College Physics Classic Reprint

Download or read book College Physics Classic Reprint written by John Oren Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Physics In pursuance of the first of these purposes, that arrangement of topics has been chosen which, in the experience of the authors, has been found to lend itself most readily to a simple and natural presentation of the subject as a whole. Owing to the more obvious relations existing between them, the sub jcet of heat is made to follow immediately after the distinctly material phenomena of mechanics and sound; electricity pre cedes light, and the subject of radiation, usually found under the different chapters of heat, electricity and light, is treated separately after these subjects have been presented. It has also been thought best, even at the sacrifice of historical consist ency, to begin the subject of electricity with current electricity, in order to secure the advantage of the greater familiarity of the student with the phenomena of applied electricity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory of Electricity: With Numerous Examples HE demand for another edition of the present work first issued in 1876 is very gratifying to the author. The chief additions in the present edition consist of articles upon the Magnetic Circuit and on the Dynamo. Having worked through the book in recent years with his pupils the author has learnt how much inaccuracy, obscurity and inadequacy of explanation remained even in the last issue, and he has spared no pains to remove such blemishes in the present edition. He also takes the opportunity of thanking numerous friends both at home and in America for sending him frequent communications concerning one part and another of the book, all of which have received careful consideration. Book A First Book of Applied Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book A First Book of Applied Electricity Classic Reprint written by Samuel Romilly Roget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book of Applied Electricity IN this presentation of a few of the elementary principles that underlie the useful applications of electricity and magnetism, reference has been made to the manifestations of electricity which are most often met with in daily life, without first requiring the reader to survey aspects of the subject which, although of ultimate theoretical importance, are not the basis of the applications with which he is already acquainted. For this reason, it has been sought to make the reader familiar with electric currents and their various effects, pointing out how some of these are applied, before he is introduced to electro statics; for it is considered more important for him to think in volts and amperes than in electrostatic units. In a Work of this size, it would have been impossible to enter into details of real electrical engineering practice without unduly restricting the outline of the principles involved. Only the most elementary mathematics are employed, and the object has been more to help to give an under standing of principles than to provide the equipment for the exact calculations which will be of more profit at a later stage when those principles have been mastered.
