Book Theory of Elasticity

Download or read book Theory of Elasticity written by A.I. Lurie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical theory of elasticity maintains a place of honour in the science ofthe behaviour ofsolids. Its basic definitions are general for all branches of this science, whilst the methods forstating and solving these problems serve as examples of its application. The theories of plasticity, creep, viscoelas ticity, and failure of solids do not adequately encompass the significance of the methods of the theory of elasticity for substantiating approaches for the calculation of stresses in structures and machines. These approaches constitute essential contributions in the sciences of material resistance and structural mechanics. The first two chapters form Part I of this book and are devoted to the basic definitions ofcontinuum mechanics; namely stress tensors (Chapter 1) and strain tensors (Chapter 2). The necessity to distinguish between initial and actual states in the nonlinear theory does not allow one to be content with considering a single strain measure. For this reason, it is expedient to introduce more rigorous tensors to describe the stress-strain state. These are considered in Section 1.3 for which the study of Sections 2.3-2.5 should precede. The mastering of the content of these sections can be postponed until the nonlinear theory is studied in Chapters 8 and 9.

Book Foundations and Applications of Mechanics Fluid mechanics

Download or read book Foundations and Applications of Mechanics Fluid mechanics written by C. S. Jog and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations and Applications of Mechanics: Volume II, Fluid Mechanics shows how suitable approximations such as ideal fluid flow model, boundary layer methods, and the acoustic approximation, can help solve problems of practical importance. The author proceeds from the general to the particular, making it clear at each stage what assumptions have been made to obtain a particular approximation. In his discussion of compressible fluids, Jog steers away from using gas tables and emphasizes obtaining solutions by numerical techniques - an approach more amenable to computer solutions. He discusses the control volume and the differential equation forms of governing equations in detail and uses examples to demonstrate the advantages and shortcomings of each approach.

Book Continuum Mechanics Volume 1

Download or read book Continuum Mechanics Volume 1 written by C. S. Jog and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum mechanics studies the foundations of deformable body mechanics from a mathematical perspective. It also acts as a base upon which other applied areas such as solid mechanics and fluid mechanics are developed. This book discusses some important topics, which have come into prominence in the latter half of the twentieth century, such as material symmetry, frame-indifference and thermomechanics. The study begins with the necessary mathematical background in the form of an introduction to tensor analysis followed by a discussion on kinematics, which deals with purely geometrical notions such as strain and rate of deformation. Moving on to derivation of the governing equations, the book also presents applications in the areas of linear and nonlinear elasticity. In addition, the volume also provides a mathematical explanation to the axioms and laws of deformable body mechanics, and its various applications in the field of solid mechanics.

Book Elasticity and Fluid Dynamics Volume 3 of Modern Classical Physics

Download or read book Elasticity and Fluid Dynamics Volume 3 of Modern Classical Physics written by Kip S. Thorne and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking textbook on twenty-first-century fluids and elastic solids and their applications Kip Thorne and Roger Blandford’s monumental Modern Classical Physics is now available in five stand-alone volumes that make ideal textbooks for individual graduate or advanced undergraduate courses on statistical physics; optics; elasticity and fluid dynamics; plasma physics; and relativity and cosmology. Each volume teaches the fundamental concepts, emphasizes modern, real-world applications, and gives students a physical and intuitive understanding of the subject. Elasticity and Fluid Dynamics provides an essential introduction to these subjects. Fluids and elastic solids are everywhere—from Earth’s crust and skyscrapers to ocean currents and airplanes. They are central to modern physics, astrophysics, the Earth sciences, biophysics, medicine, chemistry, engineering, and technology, and this centrality has intensified in recent years—so much so that a basic understanding of the behavior of elastic solids and fluids should be part of the repertoire of every physicist and engineer and almost every other natural scientist. While both elasticity and fluid dynamics involve continuum physics and use similar mathematical tools and modes of reasoning, each subject can be readily understood without the other, and the book allows them to be taught independently, with the first two chapters introducing and covering elasticity and the last six doing the same for fluid dynamics. The book also can serve as supplementary reading for many other courses, including in astrophysics, geophysics, and aerodynamics. Includes many exercise problems Features color figures, suggestions for further reading, extensive cross-references, and a detailed index Optional “Track 2” sections make this an ideal book for a one-quarter or one-semester course in elasticity, fluid dynamics, or continuum physics An online illustration package is available to professors The five volumes, which are available individually as paperbacks and ebooks, are Statistical Physics; Optics; Elasticity and Fluid Dynamics; Plasma Physics; and Relativity and Cosmology.
