Book Measurement of Heat Flux in Solid Propellant Rocketry

Download or read book Measurement of Heat Flux in Solid Propellant Rocketry written by Charles E. Brookley and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal chamber areas of solid propellant rocket motors are lined with ablative insulation to block the transfer of heat to temperature sensitive case materials. The heat rates to ablative insulators can not be determined by conventional means such as staggering thermocouples through the wall because no workable analytical solution exists for the ablative model. Therefore, it was necessary to measure the heat rates directly by mounting transducers in the ablative wall. A small 5-inch diameter rocket motor was used as the test vehicle for this study, and ablative materials were mounted in the blast tube or in the chamber (peripheral slab) area. Peripheral slabs were subjected to low velocity gas flow calculated to be 50 ft/sec; low velocity flow prevents erosion from affecting the operation of the calorimeters. Because the blast tube has an initial calculated velocity of 870 ft/sec and is therefore subject to extensive erosion, no serious attempt was made to design a heat flux gage for this area. (Author).

Book The Use of an Arc Image Furnace for Solid Propellant Ignition Studies

Download or read book The Use of an Arc Image Furnace for Solid Propellant Ignition Studies written by Jacqueline Bernadette Dawes and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arc image furnace is a laboratory device which may be used to ignite rocket propellant, simulating the conditions of overall heat flux and pressure levels obtained in the rocket motor. Ignition in a motor is usually initiated by a pyrotechnic device which produces a heating effect mainly by conduction of heat by hot particles impinging on the propellant surface and convective heating from the hot gases flowing over the surface. There is only a small proportion of the heat transferred by radiation from the igniter products. In the arc image furnace, however, radiant heat is the means used for igniting the propellant. Thus it is not an absolute test of ignition delay, but it gives an indication of the delays which may be expected from a solid propellant. (Author).

Book Ignition Response of Solid Propellants to Radiation and Conduction

Download or read book Ignition Response of Solid Propellants to Radiation and Conduction written by S. Henry Inami and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements were carried out on the ignition response of solid propellants to radiative and to conductive heat transfer. The propellants were composed of ammonium perchlorate and different organic binders. The experimental results were interpreted in terms of a model involving exothermic chemical reaction in the condensed phase of the propellant. The heat release rates in the surface-coupled reactions were measured independently. Such a model adequately fitted the ignition process associated with a thermal runaway in the condensed phase. A comparison of the ignition data demonstrated different response of the propellants to the mode of ignition. The importance of these results to rocket motor tests is discussed. (Author).

This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results obtained from an experimental analysis of the flow field in the slots of the star grain section in the head-end of the advanced solid rocket motor during the ignition transient. This work represents an extension of the previous tests and analysis to include the effects of using a center port in conjunction with multiple canted igniter ports. The flow field measurements include oil smear data on the star slot walls, pressure and heat transfer coefficient measurements on the star slot walls and velocity measurements in the star slot.
