Book Determinants of Maqasid Al shari ah based Performance Measurement Practices

Download or read book Determinants of Maqasid Al shari ah based Performance Measurement Practices written by Muhammad Ahmar bin Ali and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic banking has emerged as a thriving industry because demand is increasing in both developed and developing countries including Malaysia. Islamic banks serve Muslim and non-Muslim communities with interest-free financial products and services. The development of Islamic banks should be in tandem with their contributions to achieve the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shari'ah). Maqasid al-Shari'ah should form an integral part of the strategies underpinning the development of the Islamic financial system. However, the growth of Islamic banks is being challenged as they are not able to achieve Maqasid al-Shari'ah. It is argued that the failure to achieve Maqasid al-Shari'ah is caused by the weakness of the Performance Measurement System (PMS) of the banks. The key role of a PMS is to provide a link between business strategies and organizational objectives. Thus, the PMS of Islamic banks must be adapted to align with Maqasid al-Shari'ah. This study aims to explore the performance measurement practices in Malaysian Islamic banks based on Maqasid al-Shari'ah. The study also examines the differences between the two types of Islamic bank in Malaysia, namely, full-fledged Islamic banks and Islamic banking subsidiaries, in terms of Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures and organizational performance. To gather data for this study, the researcher distributed 146 questionnaires to various participants from head officers to senior managers in each department/business unit of all 16 Islamic commercial banks in Malaysia. The results indicate that only technological advancement and regulatory compliance have a direct relationship with the Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures. In addition, the results also indicate that having Maqasid al Shari'ah-based performance measures would enhance the organizational performance of Islamic banks. The results also reveal that a differentiation strategy, technological advancement, innovativeness, and regulatory compliance bring about greater interdependence on the Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures, which induces improved organizational performance in Islamic banks. This study also found that financial and non-financial measures as well as performance measures based on the Maqasid al-Shari'ah framework are equally important and are being implemented in Islamic banks in Malaysia. However, the findings show that there are significant differences in terms of Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures as well as organizational performance for both types of Islamic bank. Therefore, this study contributes to the performance measurement literature on Maqasid al-Shari'ah-based performance measures in the context of Islamic banks.

Book excerpt: This Technical Note focuses on financial sector performance, vulnerabilities, and derivatives in Malaysia. The note highlights that banking sector has undergone consolidation while competition has increased following measures implemented under the Financial Sector Master Plan 2001–2010. Malaysian banks are presently well capitalized with comfortable Tier 1 capital ratios. Stronger financial positions and risk management capability have enabled domestic banking groups to pursue overseas expansions, mostly within the region. The importance to some banks of overseas assets and earnings is reaching levels which, based on international experience, warrant a review of internal controls.

Book Financial Structure and Bank Profitability

Download or read book Financial Structure and Bank Profitability written by Asl? Demirgüç-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries differ in the extent to which their financial systems are bank-based or market-based. The financial systems of Germany and Japan, for example, are considered bank-based because banks play a leading role in mobilizing savings, allocating capital, overseeing investment decisions of corporate managers, and providing risk management vehicles. The systems of the United States, and the United Kingdom are considered more market-based. Using bank-level data for a large number of industrial and developing countries, the authors present evidence about the impact of financial development, and structure on bank performance. They measure the relative importance of bank or market finance by the relative size of stock aggregates, by relative trading or transaction volumes, and by indicators of relative efficiency. They show that in developing countries, both banks and stock markets are less developed, but financial systems tend to be more bank-based. The richer the country, the more active are all financial intermediaries. The greater the development of a country's banks, the tougher is the competition, the greater is the efficiency, and the lower are the bank margins, and profits. The more under-developed the stock market, the greater are the bank profits. But financial structure per se does not have a significant, independent influence on bank margins, and profits.

Book Determinants of Bank Perfomance in Malaysia

Download or read book Determinants of Bank Perfomance in Malaysia written by Aizat Bin Alias @ Abdul Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to compare and investigate the performance of Islamic banks against conventional banks, and foreign Islamic banks against domestic Islamic banks in Malaysia for the period 2006 to 2010. The study uses 33 banks in Malaysia comprise of 18 commercial banks, 15 Islamic banks, I 0 domestic Islamic banks, and 5 foreign Islamic banks. Financial ratios of return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) are used as dependent variables and independent variables comprise of loan loss provisions to total assets, net loans to total assets, total overheads to total assets, shareholders equity ratio, bank size (total assets), gross domestic products and inflation rate. Descriptive, correlation, multiple regression and test of significance for equality of means analyses were employed to test the hypotheses. In general, the study found that the independent variables respond inconsistently on dependent variables based on type of the banks. Furthermore, the study found that the conventional banks perform better than Islamic banks in term of profitability, size and assets quality. Same goes to domestic Islamic banks where they perform better than foreign Islamic banks in term of profitability, size and asset quality.

Book Determinants of Commercial Bank Interest Margins and Profitability

Download or read book Determinants of Commercial Bank Interest Margins and Profitability written by Asl? Demirgüç-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: March 1998 Differences in interest margins reflect differences in bank characteristics, macroeconomic conditions, existing financial structure and taxation, regulation, and other institutional factors. Using bank data for 80 countries for 1988-95, Demirgüç-Kunt and Huizinga show that differences in interest margins and bank profitability reflect various determinants: * Bank characteristics. * Macroeconomic conditions. * Explicit and implicit bank taxes. * Regulation of deposit insurance. * General financial structure. * Several underlying legal and institutional indicators. Controlling for differences in bank activity, leverage, and the macroeconomic environment, they find (among other things) that: * Banks in countries with a more competitive banking sector-where banking assets constitute a larger share of GDP-have smaller margins and are less profitable. The bank concentration ratio also affects bank profitability; larger banks tend to have higher margins. * Well-capitalized banks have higher net interest margins and are more profitable. This is consistent with the fact that banks with higher capital ratios have a lower cost of funding because of lower prospective bankruptcy costs. * Differences in a bank's activity mix affect spread and profitability. Banks with relatively high noninterest-earning assets are less profitable. Also, banks that rely largely on deposits for their funding are less profitable, as deposits require more branching and other expenses. Similarly, variations in overhead and other operating costs are reflected in variations in bank interest margins, as banks pass their operating costs (including the corporate tax burden) on to their depositors and lenders. * In developing countries foreign banks have greater margins and profits than domestic banks. In industrial countries, the opposite is true. * Macroeconomic factors also explain variation in interest margins. Inflation is associated with higher realized interest margins and greater profitability. Inflation brings higher costs-more transactions and generally more extensive branch networks-and also more income from bank float. Bank income increases more with inflation than bank costs do. * There is evidence that the corporate tax burden is fully passed on to bank customers in poor and rich countries alike. * Legal and institutional differences matter. Indicators of better contract enforcement, efficiency in the legal system, and lack of corruption are associated with lower realized interest margins and lower profitability. This paper-a product of the Development Research Group-is part of a larger effort in the group to study bank efficiency.

Book Corporate Governance and Bank Performance

Download or read book Corporate Governance and Bank Performance written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The authors jointly analyze the static, selection, and dynamic effects of domestic, foreign, and state ownership on bank performance. They argue that it is important to include indicators of all the relevant governance effects in the same model. "Nonrobustness" checks (which purposely exclude some indicators) support this argument. Using data from Argentina in the 1990s, their strongest and most robust results concern state ownership. State-owned banks have poor long-term performance (static effect), those undergoing privatization had particularly poor performance beforehand (selection effect), and these banks dramatically improved following privatization (dynamic effect. However, much of the measured improvement is likely due to placing nonperforming loans into residual entities, leaving "good" privatized banks."--World Bank web site.

Book The Global Findex Database 2017

Download or read book The Global Findex Database 2017 written by Asli Demirguc-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller that gives readers a paradigm-shattering new way to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world. Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Book Determinants of Credit Growth and Interest Margins in the Philippines and Asia

Download or read book Determinants of Credit Growth and Interest Margins in the Philippines and Asia written by Ms.Tatum Blaise Pua Tan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite robust deposit growth, credit growth has been sluggish in the Philippines. We attribute this to legacy weaknesses in bank balance sheets, consumption-led economic growth, and relatively high net interest margins. Bank-level analysis suggests that interest margins in the Philippines rise with bank size, bank capitalization, foreign ownership, overhead costs and tax rates. Using bank-level data for a number of Asian economies, we find that higher growth, lower inflation, higher reserve requirements, greater banking sector development, smaller stock market development and lower government deficits reduce net interest margins, informing the policy debate on strengthening financial intermediation in the Philippines.

Book How Risky Are Banks Risk Weighted Assets Evidence From the Financial Crisis

Download or read book How Risky Are Banks Risk Weighted Assets Evidence From the Financial Crisis written by Mr.Sonali Das and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study how investors account for the riskiness of banks' risk-weighted assets (RWA) by examining the determinants of stock returns and market measures of risk. We find that banks with higher RWA had lower stock returns over the US and European crises. This relationship is weaker in Europe where banks can use Basel II internal risk models. For large banks, investors paid less attention to RWA and rewarded instead lower wholesale funding and better asset quality. RWA do not, in general, predict market measures of risk although there is evidence of a positive relationship before the US crisis which becomes negative afterwards.
