Book Tariff Reform Employment and Imperial Unity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tariff Reform Employment and Imperial Unity Classic Reprint written by George Coates and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tariff Reform, Employment, and Imperial Unity The greatest question that confronts the British race at the present time is that of the confederation of all the British-speaking States under our flag into a United British Empire; but there are several other questions which must be solved before this confederation is possible. Of these the questions of employment, of the power of each citizen to be able to maintain his own home, to live a healthy life, and to bring up a family of healthy children, appear to be the most important. The other great questions of national defence and national unity cannot be solved unless we have at home a healthy and prosperous population able to bear the burden of national armaments, therefore the question of employment must come first. The writer offers this booklet as a contribution towards a solution of these problems. He believes it is the duty of every Briton to take his share in this great work, and hopes he may be able to help, if only a little, towards pointing out the paths along which the nation must travel. In 1825-26 some im portant reductions of tariff, affecting cottons, woollens, linens, leather, earthenware, etc., were made by Mr. Huskisson and at the same time silk goods, formerly prohibited, were admitted under a duty. Alike as to particulars and totals the results were highly significant. Whereas during the ten years before 1824 the annual average quantity of raw and thrown silk used by our manufacturers was 19 million pounds, in the twelve years following it was 41 million pounds.
