Book Metaphor and Belief in The Faerie Queene

Download or read book Metaphor and Belief in The Faerie Queene written by Rufus Wood and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-08-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Wood contextualizes his study of The Faerie Queene through an initial discussion of attitudes towards metaphor expressed in Elizabethan poetry. He reveals how Elizabethan writers voice a commitment to metaphor as a means of discovering and exploring their world and shows how the concept of a metaphoric principle of structure underlying Elizabethan poetics generates an exciting interpretation of The Faerie Queene. The debate which emerges concerning the use and abuse of metaphor in allegorical poetry provides a valuable contribution to the field of Spenser studies in particular and Renaissance literature in general.

Book Narrative Structure and Reader Formation in Lady Mary Wroth s Urania

Download or read book Narrative Structure and Reader Formation in Lady Mary Wroth s Urania written by Rahel Orgis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrative Structure and Reader Formation in Lady Mary Wroth’s Urania offers the first systematic formal and thematic analysis of Wroth’s Urania in its historical context and explores the structural means by which Wroth fashions her readership. The book thus has a dual focus, at once on narrative art and reader formation. It makes two original claims, the first being that the Urania is not the unorganized accumulation of stories critics have tended to present it as, but a work of sophisticated narrative structures i.e. a complex text in a positive sense. These structures are revealed by means of a circumspect narratological analysis of the formal and thematic patterns that organise the Urania. Such an analysis furthers our understanding of the reading strategies that Wroth encourages. The second claim is, then, that through the careful structuring of her text Wroth seeks to create her own ideal readership. More precisely, the formal and thematic structures of the Urania engage with readers’ expectations, inviting them to reflect on prominent thematic issues and respond to the text as what early modern prefaces term "good" readers. Combining narratological methods with a generic perspective and taking into account the work of book historians on early modern reading practices, this monograph provides a new approach to the Urania, supplementing the typically gender- or (auto)biographically-oriented interpretations of the romance. Moreover, it contributes to the study of early modern (prose) narrative and romance and exemplifies how historically contextualised narratological analysis may yield new insights and profit research on reading strategies.

Book Shakespeare and Complexity Theory

Download or read book Shakespeare and Complexity Theory written by Claire Hansen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new monograph, Claire Hansen demonstrates how Shakespeare can be understood as a complex system, and how complexity theory can provide compelling and original readings of Shakespeare’s plays. The book utilises complexity theory to illuminate early modern theatrical practice, Shakespeare pedagogy, and the phenomenon of the Shakespeare ‘myth’. The monograph re-evaluates Shakespeare, his plays, early modern theatre, and modern classrooms as complex systems, illustrating how the lens of complexity offers an enlightening new perspective on diverse areas of Shakespeare scholarship. The book’s interdisciplinary approach enriches our understanding of Shakespeare and lays the foundation for complexity theory in Shakespeare studies and the humanities more broadly.

Her nights are spent trying to pretend that she is not nearing thirty and still living in her parents' house, sleeping in the same bed as she did in elementary school. Amidst an extremely dismal morning, Sam makes a startling discovery. When wearing a pair of antique glasses, Sam finds an odd, ruby-red, half-sphere blob. The orb appears to have mysteriously grown from the faded carpet of her back porch. Sam rushes to the door to inform Matty, her best friend, foodie neighbor, and to confirm her saneness. When Sam steps outside, she makes another startling discovery. She sees a path made up of hundreds of multi-colored orbs. Sam and Matty decide to follow the mysterious path and begin to encounter challenges testing them to their core. When they uncover who the creator of the orb trail is and learn what awaits them at the end of the path, they press through grueling tasks and, at times, disturbing punishments. Join Sam and Matty on this cross-country, cross-globe adventure as they follow the path of orbs and encounter evil descendants with uncanny senses, odd coffee house rituals, ancient riddles, soup stealers, pirate transfiguration, and grotesque, cupcake punishments.

Book Disgust in Early Modern English Literature

Download or read book Disgust in Early Modern English Literature written by Natalie K. Eschenbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of disgust or revulsion in early modern English literature? How did early modern English subjects experience revulsion and how did writers represent it in poetry, plays, and prose? What does it mean when literature instructs, delights, and disgusts? This collection of essays looks at the treatment of disgust in texts by Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Herrick, and others to demonstrate how disgust, perhaps more than other affects, gives us a more complex understanding of early modern culture. Dealing with descriptions of coagulated eye drainage, stinky leeks, and blood-filled fleas, among other sensational things, the essays focus on three kinds of disgusting encounters: sexual, cultural, and textual. Early modern English writers used disgust to explore sexual mores, describe encounters with foreign cultures, and manipulate their readers' responses. The essays in this collection show how writers deployed disgust to draw, and sometimes to upset, the boundaries that had previously defined acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, people, and literatures. Together they present the compelling argument that a critical understanding of early modern cultural perspectives requires careful attention to disgust.
