She is a true and devoted wife whose sky is never dim, whose heart is ever buoyant with hope. Their home life is simple and sweet and strong. Mr. Langford is an author of no men standing. In The Examiner, The Sunday School Times and The Chicago Standard, the products of his pen are always welcomed. As a fellow-student I cannot refrain from paying a tribute also to the faithful and efiicient service which cg. Has rendered to our own college magazine. As a preacher Mr. Lang ford is strong, clear and simple in style. His utterance is graced by delicate and appropriate imagery, feeling and pathos. He is a speaker of deep conviction and over-mastering purpose. As a Christian his life speaks for itself. The man who with a family to support and educate, and the duty of preaching every Sun day, can do what DC. Has done knows what Paul meant when he said I press. As a friend he is constant and true. The future of such a man cannot be other than bright in the best sense. Go on, we are listening for your voice. We are waiting for your footsteps, at the head of your calling. Book McMaster University Volume 1

Download or read book McMaster University Volume 1 written by Charles M. Johnston and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toronto Years is the first of three volumes relating the history of McMaster University. It is not simply an institutional chronicle, which lists names for the record; it is a dramatic and colourful story that shows how the university grew out of earlier Baptist educational endeavours and describes its eventful first forty years, spent on the Bloor Street Campus in Toronto. McMaster University was established in 1887 as a trust of the Baptist constituency, which helped to ensure vital and ongoing financial support, but which also embroiled the school in the often bitter theological debates sweeping through the churches. In the 1920s, the struggle between modernism and fundamentalism threatened the university’s very existence. Fluctuating enrolment, wartime stresses, and education continually forced confrontations over the question of federation with the provincial university in Toronto. Charles Johnston describes the achievements of a small group of courageous and skilful administrators amid the conflicting currents of educational and religious development in Canada during a period when universities were the targets of traditional criticisms of urban values. This volume will be of interest to anyone concerned with the cultural and intellectual growth of the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 25: October, 1915, to May, 1916 Having secured one of the few surviving Paris taxis I was enabled to catch the night train to Switzerland. There were few civilians on board and we did not apparently follow any schedule nor did we have an opportunity to find out the names of the darkened towns through which we passed. At one station a lot of soldiers climbed off the train and picked their way through several hundred of their comrades who were sleeping peacefully upon the hard concrete platforms of the gore. I counted twenty different permutations and combinations of uniform, the most remarkable being a light blue tunic, green velvet trousers and a peaked cap of tweed. The war caught France at the very time the change from the old uniform to the new Was being effected. At the last station on the French side of the frontier'we were all escorted to a Shed where a final examination of passports was made. The half dozen soldiers on guard were dignified old fel lows wearing the garb of the War of '70; they appeared to take themselves very seriously. Among the passengers was a Swiss from London; he was unfortunately the possessor of a name which was hopelessly Teutonic - say Adolf Max Winterthur - and was slated for deten tion. Finally he produced a letter from the Swiss Consulate at London, which stated that the bearer was known personally by the Consular staff, had been ten years in London and was in favor of the Allies. This settled the matter and he was permitted to depart. Several consumptives bound for the sanatarium of Leysin and a few Belgians were all who continued the journey toward the Swiss border station. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 26: October, 1916, to May, 1917 Reference has already been made to the use of colour to symbolize the faculty, and this becomes of greater interest when we study the meaning of university hoods, for in them an attempt is made to attach a significance to colour combinations which will be intelligible to the enlightened few. If the list of colours used were sufficiently short, this would no doubt be most successful, for even in our materialistic age, color still maintains its sym bolic concept. If anyone is inclined to doubt this, let him picture to himself the sensation that would result in a staid Presbyterian kirk, if the minister, some fine Sabbath morning, were to borrow the vestments of his Anglican neighbor, and appear in the pulpit clad in white instead of black. In fact there have been times in the Church of England in which the wearing of the white surplice was looked upon as savouring of high churchism. This is what Hood refers to when he says. Download or read book The McMaster University Monthly Vol 14 written by McMaster University and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 14: October, 1904, to May, 1905 It has been said that a minister's power is his message multiplied by his personality. Dr. Welton's personality was distinctly marked. In power of thought, quickness and range of feeling, and in strength of will, he gave the impression of original force guided, but not repressed, by education and high conscience. Sympathethic, but not weak, he attracted friends and retained them. Intellectual, but not pedantic, he won respect and confidence, and stimulated others to mental activity; but he did not, by display of learning, discourage those who were seeking the kingdom of knowledge. Acting from convictions intelligently formed, he was fitted as a leader to give direction; but he did not mistake obstinacy for firmness. By respecting the views of those with whom he was associated, he bound them most closely to what was best and to himself. He united sweetness with light, and the light turned to love. Such was Dr. Welton's personality as I knew him. His message was in its "simplicity sublime." The great doctrines of God, of Christ and His salvation, of the Gospel church made the strong music which "his soul tried to catch." These great truths came unto him as the word of the Lord and then came forth from him winged with whatever power his personal force could impart to them. In declaring them he had the "simplicity that is in Christ." These doctrines gave him the grace of continuance.
