Book excerpt: In early 16th century, life in the City of London was very different for the citizens and the royal household. The first novel is picturing citizen life in London in the early Tudor days. It is the story of the orphan-brothers Stephen and Ambrose, who must find their way in life at a very young age. Differently talented, they apprentice themselves each to an armourer and to a printer. The life of the citizens outside of the royal court is well regulated, but dependant of the court and the nobles and their pleasure. The brothers have to experience the Ill May Day as hundreds of young apprentices in London were involved in a terrible outrage against foreigners, living in London. The Aldermen of the City are helpless against the nobles in their effort to rescue their own sons from the scaffold, but for the intervention of Henry VIII … In the second novel, the life of the household of Henry VIII is presented in the period between 1529 and 1536 in Windsor Castle. A ghost-mystery is interwoven into the historical plot, covering the legend of Herne the Hunter. It is the time during Henry’s first divorce from Catherine of Aragon, his marriage to Anne Boleyn and her execution. Many of the historical figures of the time appear in a good portrayal of every-day-life in a gigantic and formidable castle.

Book Masters Servants and Magistrates in Britain and the Empire 1562 1955

Download or read book Masters Servants and Magistrates in Britain and the Empire 1562 1955 written by Douglas Hay and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master and servant acts, the cornerstone of English employment law for more than four hundred years, gave largely unsupervised, inferior magistrates wide discretion over employment relations, including the power to whip, fine, and imprison men, women, and children for breach of private contracts with their employers. The English model was adopted, modified, and reinvented in more than a thousand colonial statutes and ordinances regulating the recruitment, retention, and discipline of workers in shops, mines, and factories; on farms, in forests, and on plantations; and at sea. This collection presents the first integrated comparative account of employment law, its enforcement, and its importance throughout the British Empire. Sweeping in its geographic and temporal scope, this volume tests the relationship between enacted law and enforced law in varied settings, with different social and racial structures, different economies, and different constitutional relationships to Britain. Investigations of the enforcement of master and servant law in England, the British Caribbean, India, Africa, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, and colonial America shed new light on the nature of law and legal institutions, the role of inferior courts in compelling performance, and the definition of "free labor" within a multiracial empire. Book excerpt: "J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is widely regarded as the greatest painter Britain has ever produced. Despite the many books and exhibitions that have been devoted to him, there is one aspect of his extraordinary oeuvre that has never been thoroughly examined. Uniquely in the history of European art, he took on all comers, past and present, that he considered worthy of a challenge, creating his own images in their styles. These works were both acts of homage and a sophisticated form of art criticism, demonstrating his understanding of great art and his ability to equal or better the most celebrated exponents of the landscape tradition. No artist, however revered, was considered beyond challenge. This unique habit is clearly a key to understanding Turner's art, yet the issue is one that has so far never been thoroughly addressed on Turner and on British art of the 18th and 19th centuries. In "Turner and the Masters" leading authorities explore this fascinating aspect of his career, revealing new detail on the debts and rivalries that shaped his work in often unexpected ways. Accompanying a major touring exhibition that brings together works by Turner with masterpieces by Claude, Canaletto, Ruisdael, Van de Velde, Poussin, Rubens and Rembrandt, as well as by Turner's contemporaries including Constable and Bonnington, this book firmly positions Turner in the company of the greatest painters of all time. The contributors include Guillaume Faroult, Sarah Monks, Martin Myrone, Kathleen Nicholson, Philippa Simpson and Ian Warrell." --Book Jacket.

Book The Masters of the Revels and Elizabeth I s Court Theatre

Download or read book The Masters of the Revels and Elizabeth I s Court Theatre written by W. R. Streitberger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masters of the Revels and Elizabeth I's Court Theatre places the Revels Office and Elizabeth I's court theatre in a pre-modern, patronage and gift-exchange driven-world of centralized power in which hospitality, liberality, and conspicuous display were fundamental aspects of social life. W.R. Streitberger reconsiders the relationship between the biographies of the Masters and the conduct of their duties, rethinking the organization and development of the Office, re-examining its productions, and exploring its impact on the development of the commercial theatre. The nascent capitalist economy that developed alongside and interpenetrated the gift-driven system that was in place during Elizabeth's reign became the vehicle through which the Revels Office along with the commercial theatre was transformed. Beginning in the early 1570s and stretching over a period of twenty years, this change was brought about by a small group of influential Privy Councillors. When this project began in the early 1570s the Queen's revels were principally in-house productions, devised by the Master of the Revels and funded by the Crown. When the project was completed in the late 1590s, the Revels Office had been made responsible for plays only and put on a budget so small that it was incapable of producing them. That job was left to the companies performing at court. Between 1594 and 1600, the revels consisted almost entirely of plays brought in by professional companies in the commercial theatres in London. These companies were patronized by the queen's relatives and friends and their theatres were protected by the Privy Council. Between 1594 and 1600, for example, all the plays in the revels were supplied by the Admiral's and Chamberlain's Players which included writers such as Shakespeare, and legendary actors such as Edward Alleyn, Richard Burbage, and Will Kempe. The queen's revels essentially became a commercial enterprise, paid for by the ordinary Londoners who came to see these companies perform in selected London theatres which were protected by the Council.
