Book Legal report on the ecosystem approach to fisheries in the United Republic of Tanzania

Download or read book Legal report on the ecosystem approach to fisheries in the United Republic of Tanzania written by Nakamura, J.N., Amador, T. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legislating for the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) is complex, due to the holistic nature of the EAF involving multiple factors that underpin the social, economic, environmental, and institutional aspects of fisheries sustainability. These factors include ecosystems integration, risks, intersectoral collaboration, research, participatory processes, monitoring, control, surveillance, and enforcement, among others. To assess how the EAF is being implemented through national policy and legal frameworks, FAO developed "A diagnostic tool for implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries through national policy and legal frameworks". This second edition of the legal report on the EAF contains a revised analysis of the extent to which the 82 EAF legal requirements, which are considered the minimum standards in legislating for the EAF, are incorporated in the United Republic of Tanzania's policy and legal instruments relevant to the fisheries sector and other relevant sectors of the country (such as environment, wildlife, ecosystems, and maritime affairs). Based on this preliminary diagnosis, gaps were identified in the assessed instruments, and recommendations were made for improving the implementation of the EAF. This second edition of the EAF Legal Report of the United Republic of Tanzania is based on the findings from two missions carried out by FAO, with support from the EAF-Nansen Programme, to the United Republic of Tanzania. The first mission was undertaken in March 2023, when the first edition of the report was presented to the government and various other stakeholders, in Dodoma, and additional information was collected. Additional information was collected in the second mission, undertaken in August 2023, when FAO supported the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries of the United Republic of Tanzania in launching the process for the comprehensive review of the 2015 National Fisheries Policy and the 2003 Fisheries Act, as amended in 2020, from Mainland Tanzania, at a national workshop held in Morogoro. The second edition of the EAF Legal Report of the United Republic of Tanzania was endorsed by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in August 2023.

Book Rural Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction Policies

Download or read book Rural Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction Policies written by Frank Ellis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new collection of contributions brings together current thinking on poverty reduction and rural livelihoods in developing countries. The book examines both macroeconomic and microeconomic phenomena and contains wide range of case studies. Skilfully exposing the gap that exists between the rhetoric of poverty reduction strategies in capital cities and the practice of public sector delivery in rural areas, this key text will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers in the fields of rural development, rural livelihoods, poverty reduction strategies and Sub-Saharan Africa development as well as advisors and practitioners in international organizations.

Book Ecotourism in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Ecotourism in Sub Saharan Africa written by Kenneth Backman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first mention in the academic literature, ecotourism has been endorsed by NGOs and governments as the most environmentally sound and locally beneficial method of tourist development. Over the last thirty years sub-Saharan Africa has adopted ecotourism as the primary focus for tourism development; research into this has demonstrated mixed results. In this publication, we seek to explore the actual outcomes for African countries that have developed their tourism policy around the principals and values of ecotourism. The sheer scope and magnitude of the task means that a complete evaluation of ecotourism in Africa is impossible. Instead, included here are spot assessments of various aspects of ecotourism related to conservation, policy development, environment, governance, community and indigenous peoples in southern Africa. The studies cover a wide array of countries, including Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Though this is only the beginning of a needed long term evaluation of the positives and negatives of ecotourism, it provides a starting point from which to move forward. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ecotourism.

Book Assessing investment priorities for driving inclusive agricultural transformation in Tanzania

Download or read book Assessing investment priorities for driving inclusive agricultural transformation in Tanzania written by Aragie, Emerta and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilizes a recursive dynamic general equilibrium model calibrated with data for Tanzania to explore the link between agricultural and rural development spending and four development outcomes: economic growth, job creation, poverty reduction, and diet quality. Results show that no single expenditure option is the most effective in achieving all four desired development outcomes for Tanzania. Productivity-enhancing agricultural interventions in horticulture are effective at generating growth in the agri-food system (AFS) and improving diets, but have a limited effect on employment. Supporting cereal producers has large effects on growth and poverty reduction, with relatively high returns per dollar invested, but its effect on diet quality is weak. Providing livestock services to milk and poultry farmers consistently ranks high across the outcome indicators, with strong employment effects on downstream AFS. Crop research and development and feeder roads generate moderate impacts on all four outcomes. Partially reallocating the budget towards the most cost-effective spending options can substantially increase the development effectiveness for Tanzania of agriculture sector support expenditures. The approach adopted in this study can help policymakers design and prioritize agricultural interventions and expenditure portfolios that better reflect the country’s broad food system.

Book East African Rift Valley Lakes

Download or read book East African Rift Valley Lakes written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the assessment of Lakes Turkana, Tanganyika, Victoria and Malawi, the largest of the East African Rift Valley Lakes and among the oldest lakes in the world. The lakes are renowned for their high endemism and support a vital socio-economic service as a core for transportation, water supply, fisheries, recreation and tourism. Anthropogenic impacts have significantly altered the ecosystem function of these lakes. Lake Victoria, shared by three countries and influenced by two more in the catchment area, was targeted for causal chain and policy option analysis. Root causes related to pollution and overexploitation are discussed and policy options to address the driving issues are presented.--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Poultry sector written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poultry sector continues to grow and industrialize in many parts of the world. An increasing human population, greater purchasing power and urbanization have been strong drivers of growth. A clear division is developing between industrialized production systems of large and medium size feeding into integrated value chains, and extensive production systems supporting livelihoods and supplying local or niche markets. The primary role of the former is to supply cheap and safe food to populations often distant from the source of supply, while the latter acts as a livelihood safety net, often as part of a diverse portfolio of income sources. Understanding how poultry production systems and value chains work is essential in order to develop a country’s poultry sector sustainably. This review for Tanzania is part of a series of Livestock Country Reviews developed by FAO's Animal Production and Health Division (AGA). The reviews aim to support sustainable and effective development interventions and policy recommendations and contribute to informed decision-making and investments in the poultry sector by: (i) providing information and data about national poultry supply chains (with a special focus on poultry production); (ii) analysing strengths, weaknesses and prospects along the supply chain; and (iii) identifying opportunities for poultry sector development.
