This showed that while the hedge school was still the main provider of education, there were a significant number of purpose-built schools in County Wicklow. This book investigates the origins of these purpose-built schools. While some came from the eighteenth century, most were built in the decade prior to 1825. They were built as a result of local efforts involving landlords, clergymen, and parents, as well as support from the Kildare Place Society and others. Many of these schools became connected with the National School system when it was established in 1831. Using original research from archives, society records and the reports of the Wicklow Education Society, the development of early purpose-built schools in Wicklow is described for the first time.

Another section tries to establish what is known of actual storytelling in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th: the tellers' training, their techniques and conception of tradition, their status, the etiquette of performance and the role of the audience. Themes and formal characteristics of different kinds of oral narratives are examined.

The Hanbidge memoirs provide a vivid and unique account of Protestant 'small farmer' life in West Wicklow in the nineteenth century, together with recollections of the 1798 rebellion. There are also glimpses of Jonathan Swift and members of the Synge family. Wiliam Hanbidge wrote at the behest of his daughter, setting down in a simple but detailed manner the life of his family, their farming practices, past-times, communal relations, religious views, and awareness of the outer world. His account of travelling to New York after the Famine with a party of boys is especially fascinating. No comparable account of his social group and class has ever been published. Mary Hanbidge's devoted private publication of her father's memoirs was eclipsed by the outbreak of the Second World War, when many copies were destroyed by bombing.

Then a little inland there is rising ground dominated by small farms, principally engaged in sheep farming; in the centre of the county there is a magnificent upland wilderness. West Wicklow, which falls away from these heights towards the plains of Kildare, repeats the sheep farming model. Wicklow was one of the last areas of Ireland to be shired. Its existence in its modern form dates only from the early 17th century. Traditionally its society and economy has been dominated by the two coastal towns of Wicklow and Arklow. From the late 19th century Bray in the north of the county became a watering place for Dubliners in the classic way of Victorian seaside resorts, and was indeed dubbed the Blackpool of Ireland.
