  • Author : Aled Jones
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book Powers of the Press written by Aled Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of the popular press presents all modern societies with difficulties. It is, however, a problem with a history: the hold of the press over public opinion was debated with urgency throughout the 19th century. This book looks at the ways in which individuals, pressure groups, political organisations and the state sought to understand the mass communications media of the 19th century, and use them to influence public opinion and effect moral and social reform. Aled Jones addresses the problem by using three approaches: first he considers the 19th century theories of the influence of communications media on patterns of social thought and behaviour; then he examines attitudes towards the press in both high and popular culture; finally he explores the social and intellectual world of the reader, the consumer both of the press as a commodity and of the hidden moral strategies that were built into it. The tensions between Victorian moral imperatives and the operation of the free commercial market raised issues of great public concern, such as whether the mass media should be under private or public control. These tensions have dominated the way in which Britain and other western societies have thought about the newer broadcasting media, but their origins are older and more complex than studies of contemporary media acknowledge.

Book Media and Democracy

Download or read book Media and Democracy written by James Curran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media and Democracy addresses key topics and themes in relation to democratic theory, media and technology, comparative media studies, media and history, and the evolution of media research. For example: How does TV entertainment contribute to the democratic life of society? Why are Americans less informed about politics and international affairs than Europeans? How should new communications technology and globalisation change our understanding of the democratic role of the media? What does the rise of international ezines reveal about the limits of the internet? What is the future of journalism? Does advertising influence the media? Is American media independence from government a myth? How have the media influenced the development of modern society? Professor Curran’s response to these questions provides both a clear introduction to media research, written for university undergraduates studying in different countries, and an innovative analysis written by one of the field’s leading scholars.

Book The British Press and Broadcasting Since 1945

Download or read book The British Press and Broadcasting Since 1945 written by Colin Seymour-Ure and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1996-06-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Colin Seymour-Ure's history of the press and broadcasting in post-war Britain offers a concise and fully up-to-date overview of the development of the media and its central role in British society. The book covers the period from a time when the phrase "mass media" was barely used, to the era of international media conglomerates and global communications. Supported by detailed tables, the analysis traces changes in what was available and what people used - the size and ownership of the national and provincial press; the growth of television and the impact of ITV; the decline and revival of radio; the continuities and differences in what people read, looked at, listened to and liked. This updated edition also covers recent developments such as the proliferation of satellite use, upheavel at the BBC, and the reform of ITV in the 1990 Broadcasting Act. Such developments place more weight than ever on the relations between media and politics. Seymour-Ure's analysis focuses on the key question of accountability - the accountability of politicians through media to the public, and the accountability of media themselves.

Book Get Me a Murder a Day

Download or read book Get Me a Murder a Day written by Kevin Williams and published by Hodder Education. This book was released on 1998 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a basic introduction to the development of mass communication in Britain. It examines the emergence of media industries and audiences in the context of issues of regulation and control. The focus is on the histories of the print, broadcasting and film media. The main landmarks in the development of these media are outlined as well as the key factors that have shaped the changing nature of their industrial organisation and structure and the character of their audiences. The book also examines how the growth of new forms of mass communication has always been accompanied by fears of their impact on popular opinions and behaviour. The concerns of powerful elites, news and information managers and moral entrepreneurs are treated as an integral part of the history of mass communication. Changing forms of censorship and control are examined throughout different historical periods. It begins with the birth of printing in the fifteenth century and traces emergence of the modern newspaper from the struggles of the nineteenth century radical press to the Wapping Revolution of the 1980s. The development of visual media is explored from the advent of the silent movies to the contemporary world of cable, satellite and the internet.
