Download or read book Chioma and the Masquerade written by Kathy Adinma and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Chioma and the Masquerade is drawn from a typical Nigerian Igbo setting, where children gather under a tree on a moonlight night and are told beautiful stories laced with strong moral lessons. Parents, grandparents, or other adults find joy in storytelling, and the children look forward to these happy times. The stories are sometimes dramatized, and the excited voices of the children can be heard as they sang along with hearty clapping and dancing. This book teaches children the need to work hard and obey their parents. It also highlights the bad habit of telling lies and why good children should not lie. The rich culture of the new Yam Festival is shown. It is a time of thanksgiving to the good Lord for his great goodness, blessings, and mercies. It is a time of merriment with rich music and good food and exchange of visits between friends and families. The village square is the center of attraction, and people come from different parts of the villages to watch the dances, masquerades, local wrestling, and arts and crafts. The author wishes the children a happy reading and hope they will learn to be good, truthful, and obedient children.

Book Touch and the Masquerades of Nigeria

Download or read book Touch and the Masquerades of Nigeria written by David Griffiths and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. In the 'Masquerades of Nigeria' and 'Touch', the fourth volume of his mask: A Release of Acting Resources, David Griffiths investigates the use of mask in the Masquerade traditions of West Africa, and specially of Nigeria. The author persuasively argues in favour of a common language of masek performance, and focuses particularly on the manner in which the Nigerian dramatist Wole Soyinka explores the theatrical virtuosity and vibrancy of mask in his plays, specially his 'root' play 'A Dance in the Forests'. David Griffiths then presents his short Trilogy of plays, under the title 'Touch' which he created to explore the intricate subtleties of African mask in a manner accessible to Western actors. 'Touch' is based on Soyinka's play and arguably needs that as a point fo reference- but being directed to rad Soykina is to everyone's benefit.

Book Cultural Visions Essays in the History of Culture

Download or read book Cultural Visions Essays in the History of Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection opens with an inquiry into the assumptions and methods of the historical study of culture, comparing the new cultural history with the old. Thirteen essays follow, each defining a problem within a particular culture. In the first section, Biography and Autobiography, three scholars explore historically changing types of self-conception, each reflecting larger cultural meanings; essays included examine Italian Renaissance biographers and the autobiographies of Benjamin Franklin and Mohandas Gandhi. A second group of contributors explore problems raised by the writing of history itself, especially as it relates to a notion of culture. Here examples are drawn from the writings of Thucydides, Jacob Burckhardt, and the art historians Alois Riegl and Josef Strzygowski. In the third section, Politics, Nationalism, and Culture, the essays explore relationships between cultural creativity and national identity, with case studies focusing on the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, the place of Castile within the national history of Spain, and the impact of World War I on work of Thomas Mann. The final section, Cultural Translation, raises the complex questions of cultural influence and the transmission of traditions over time through studies of Philo of Alexandria's interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, Erasmus' use of Socrates, Jean Bodin's conception of Roman law, and adaptations of the Hebrew Bible for American children.

Book Global Trade and Cultural Authentication

Download or read book Global Trade and Cultural Authentication written by Joanne B. Eicher and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Trade and Cultural Authentication, edited by Joanne Eicher, showcases the complexity and enduring aesthetic and ingenuity of Kalabari artisans. The Kalabari people, most of whom make their homes in the eastern Niger Delta region of western Africa, are renowned for the artistry in working with globally imported textiles and dress for centuries. The 22 essays in this edited volume feature the work of leading Nigerian and American scholars and offer an in-depth, nuanced understanding of Kalabari textiles, aesthetics, and engagement with past and present global trade networks. Using dress and textiles as a lens, Global Trade and Cultural Authentication explores the Kalabari people's centuries-long role in the global trade arena. Their economic interconnectedness demonstrates that Africa was never a "dark continent" but, rather, critically involved in a global trade built around Kalabari resourcefulness and imagination.
